We evaluate options and identify opportunities and risks to support our customers' decision making. We assist with asset strategy and selection, business case preparation, concept and feasibility studies, technology evaluation, energy strategies and asset operational excellence.

This position supports Worley Consulting's Autonomous Mining & Technology initiatives by providing high-quality technical solutions, documentation, analytical support, and coordination across Mine Automation & Technology projects, across Canada, the U.S., and South America.

Purpose

The Surface Mining Autonomous Engineer provides technical engineering expertise and consulting support for automation and autonomous systems in surface mining operations. The Surface Mining Automation & Autonomous Systems Engineer will support clients through technology assessments, frontend studies, system definition, and project execution related to autonomous and automation-enabled mining environments.

  • This role combines hands-on surface mining experience with automation, Tele remote, controls, and digital systems understanding, supporting Robust, Reliable, Secure, fit-for-purpose solutions that improve safety, reliability, productivity, and operational readiness of surface mining assets.

This is a full‐time hybrid position based at a Worley office location in Canada or the U.S.

Overall Responsibilities and Key Accountabilities

  • Support Mining Automation and Technology Subject Matter Experts across autonomous mining and technology projects.
  • Create, consolidate, and maintain high-quality technical deliverables including reports, market analysis, presentations, and automation deliverables for the client.
  • Ensure consistency and alignment of technical content with project requirements and standards.
  • Analyze and interpret technical information to support decision-making and recommendations.
  • Support execution of assigned work packages with a high level of independence.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary project teams including, telecom, mechatronics, digital, automation, and consulting disciplines.
  • Provide clear and effective written and verbal communication to internal and external stakeholders
  • Apply Worley processes, systems, and quality requirements consistently.
  • Support continuous improvement of documentation workflows and knowledge management practices.
  • Approximately 25% travel is expected. The role is hybrid and 3 days per week is expected in office when not traveling.

What you will bring

Technical and Industry Experience

  • Significant experience in surface mining operations, projects, or consulting, with exposure to automation, Tele remote or autonomous systems.
  • Practical experience in surface mining environments such as open pits, surface infrastructure, or mining operations support.
  • Demonstrated impact on operational improvement, performance optimization, or similar workstreams centered around autonomous and automation.
  • Hands-on experience with DCS, PLC, and SCADA applications and systems as it applies to surface mining.
  • Experience or strong exposure to one or more of the following:
    • Autonomous haulage systems (AHS)
    • Mining automation and control systems
    • Fleet management and dispatch systems
    • Integrated operations / remote operations centers
  • Understanding interfaces between mobile equipment, control systems, communications, and digital platforms.
  • Experience supporting projects across multiple phases including studies, design, implementation, and operational support.
  • Exposure to new and emerging applications of Mine Automation, Autonomous Mining, or digital mining technologies.

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with a practical engineering mindset.
  • Ability to communicate complex technical concepts clearly and succinctly with operations, technical teams, OEMs, and client stakeholders.

Education – Qualifications, Accreditation, Training

  • Degree in Mining Engineering or related engineering discipline (Mechanical, Electrical, Mechatronics, Controls, Computer)
  • Professional Engineer (P.Eng. / P.E.) preferred where applicable
  • Training or familiarity with mining safety standards (e.g., MSHA or equivalent)
  • Exposure to data, analytics, or digital mining platforms is increasingly valued

Additional Information

For applicants based in the province of British Columbia, the salary range is CAD $166,832 to $245,341, commensurate with experience.

For Denver, Colorado based candidates, the salary range is USD $163,863-$240,975 annually, commensurate with experience.
