Job description

The ideal candidate will be located in TX (preferably in/around San Antonio) and brings hands-on distribution planning and design experience, with a strong preference for familiarity with CPS Energy standards and relevant planning and design software.

What You’ll Do

  • Perform electric distribution planning studies to support system reliability, load growth, and capital improvement programs.
  • Support and develop distribution system improvement plans, including feeder analysis, system upgrades, and voltage performance evaluations.
  • Apply and interpret utility standards and specifications, with a strong emphasis on CPS Energy standards.
  • Coordinate closely with distribution design teams to ensure planning recommendations are accurately translated into design-ready solutions.
  • Conduct technical evaluations using industry-standard planning and design tools such as CYME, GIS-based systems, and MicroStation.
  • Support overhead and underground distribution systems, including feeder layouts, equipment selection, and constructability considerations.
  • Review and validate planning assumptions, models, and outputs to ensure accuracy and compliance with quality standards.
  • Collaborate with project managers, engineers, designers, and utility stakeholders to communicate findings, risks, and recommended solutions.
  • Participate in quality control processes, including self-checks and peer reviews, to ensure high-quality deliverables.
  • Identify opportunities for process improvements and contribute to continuous enhancement of planning methodologies.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering (Civil or related engineering disciplines may be considered depending on experience).
  • Experience in electric distribution planning and distribution design.
  • Familiarity with CPS Energy standards or direct experience supporting CPS Energy projects.
  • Working knowledge of distribution planning and design software, including CYME, GIS, and/or MicroStation.
  • Understanding of electric distribution systems, including feeders, voltage regulation, and capacity planning.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Overhead distribution design experience.
  • Experience supporting both planning and design phases of distribution projects.
  • Utility consulting or owner/operator utility experience.
  • Familiarity with additional distribution analysis, modeling, or asset management tools.
