What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote Subject Matter Expert, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Subject Matter Expert, you need deep expertise in your subject area, strong analytical abilities, and relevant academic or professional credentials. Familiarity with collaboration platforms (such as Slack, Zoom, or Microsoft Teams), content management systems, and sometimes industry-specific certifications are typically expected. Excellent written communication, self-motivation, and time management are crucial soft skills for working independently and conveying complex information clearly. These skills ensure effective remote collaboration, high-quality deliverables, and the ability to support teams or clients from a distance.

How do Remote Subject Matter Experts typically collaborate with dispersed teams to ensure effective knowledge transfer?

Remote Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) often work with teams across different locations and time zones, which requires strong communication and collaboration skills. They commonly use digital collaboration tools like video conferencing, shared documents, and project management platforms to facilitate real-time discussions and ongoing knowledge sharing. Building clear documentation and providing asynchronous training materials are also essential to ensure that all team members, regardless of their location, have access to the SME's expertise. Regular check-ins and feedback sessions help maintain alignment and address any challenges promptly. This collaborative approach enables remote SMEs to contribute effectively to projects and support team success.

What is a Remote Subject Matter Expert?

SMEs may work in areas such as education, technology, healthcare, or business, and are often consulted to solve complex problems or develop specialized content. Their remote status allows them to collaborate with teams or clients from anywhere, using digital communication tools to share their expertise efficiently.

Are you a seasoned networking and security expert with a passion for driving innovation and shaping cutting-edge solutions in enterprise IT? If so, joining our team as a Senior Staff Subject Matter Expert at Nutanix provides you the opportunity to lead the way in transforming networking strategies, leverage your extensive expertise to influence global service offerings, and collaborate with talented professionals while making a significant impact on our clients' success in the evolving cloud landscape.

About the Team

At Nutanix, you’ll be joining the Global Practice team within our Professional Services division, a diverse and talented group of professionals comprising 10 members spread across the US, India, EMEA, and APAC. What sets this team apart is their unwavering dedication to delivering exceptional service and tailored solutions to our clients, addressing their unique IT infrastructure challenges. Team members work collaboratively, leveraging innovative strategies and implementing cutting-edge technologies to drive success. You will report to the Global Practice Leader - Cloud Infrastructure Practice. The work setup is fully remote, providing flexibility and the convenience of working from wherever you choose. • Create, update, and validate service offerings in collaboration with Product Management and deliver complex networking and security solutions to clients.

  • Act as the global Subject Matter Expert, enhancing the consultant skill set and knowledge through training programs and peer review processes.

  • Drive thought leadership initiatives including blogs, white papers, and reference architectures to position Nutanix as a leader in enterprise networking and security.

  • Collaborate with pre-sales teams to design strategic solutions for complex engagements, ensuring quality deliverables and customer satisfaction.

  • Monitor and evaluate service delivery quality, implementing improvements where necessary to uphold Nutanix’s high standards.

  • Engage with customers to understand their business goals and translate them into effective networking and security architectures on the Nutanix platform.

  • Achieve a robust understanding of customer pain points and develop best practices that are repeatable across the consultant base within the first year.

What You Will Bring

  • 15+ years of experience in enterprise IT infrastructure, with 8+ years focused on networking and security architecture.

  • Expertise in routing and switching protocols (BGP, OSPF, EVPN-VXLAN) and deep understanding of service provider networking.

  • Strong knowledge of microsegmentation design, zero trust architecture, and next-generation firewall technologies.

  • Hands-on experience with Nutanix Flow Virtual Networking and Flow Network Security or equivalent platforms.

  • Proficient in Kubernetes networking, CI/CD practices, and infrastructure-as-code tools (Terraform, Ansible).

  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to influence stakeholders and lead cross-functional teams without direct authority.

  • Strong problem-solving skills demonstrated through successful delivery of complex network and security solutions.

  • Bachelor's or master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field; relevant industry certifications (CCIE, JNCIE) preferred.
