Job description

Industrial Mechanical Project Manager/Estimator

Position Overview:

  • We are seeking an experienced Project Manager / Estimator to join a growing industrial fabrication and mechanical services team. This role is central to the success of our operations — managing complex industrial projects from scope development through completion, with a strong emphasis on field-based estimation in environments where detailed drawings are rarely provided. The right candidate thrives on ambiguity, brings strong mechanical aptitude, and earns customer trust by delivering accurate estimates and reliable project execution independently.

Key Responsibilities:

Estimation:

  • Develop accurate cost estimates for industrial projects — often without formal drawings — working directly with customers and designers to define scope
  • Assess and price pipe runs, rigging, crane picks, roof penetrations, mezzanines, and outage support
  • Conduct site visits and apply field knowledge to produce detailed, competitive proposals
  • Use Excel-based estimating workflows; adapt to evolving internal ERP and tools

Project Management:

  • Manage full project lifecycle: scope development, resource coordination, scheduling, and closeout
  • Serve as primary point of contact for an assigned portfolio of existing industrial clients
  • Coordinate with field personnel, fabricators, designers, and subcontractors to ensure on-time, on-budget delivery
  • Support outage and maintenance planning for industrial customers

Client & Business Development Support:

  • Manage and grow existing customer relationships passed down from senior account managers
  • Collaborate with the dedicated business development team to quote and pursue new leads
  • Identify upsell and cross-sell opportunities within assigned accounts

Required Qualifications:

  • Minimum 5 years of experience in industrial estimation, project management, or field operations — millwright or industrial mechanical background strongly preferred
  • Demonstrated ability to estimate projects without drawings, interpreting customer intent and field conditions independently
  • Hands-on experience with industrial work including pipe fitting, rigging, crane operations, structural fabrication, or related disciplines
  • Strong mechanical aptitude with a deep understanding of the difference between industrial and commercial construction environments
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel for estimating; willingness to learn custom ERP systems
  • Excellent communication skills — able to build trust with customers who provide minimal specification and expect independent problem-solving

Preferred Qualifications

  • Background from industrial mechanical service companies (millwright, industrial mechanical, rigging, or similar)
  • Experience managing maintenance projects or outage support in manufacturing, processing, or heavy industrial facilities
  • Familiarity with ERP systems (experience with Infor a plus)

Compensation & Benefits:

  • Base Salary: Up to $110,000 (commensurate with experience; higher compensation considered for candidates with an established book of business)
  • Company Vehicle: Ford Escape provided for business and personal use, including fuel card and company credit card for maintenance
  • Cell Phone: $40/month reimbursement
  • PTO: Minimum 2 weeks; negotiable for experienced candidates
  • Performance Incentive: Company profit-sharing program (contingent on profitability thresholds)
  • Remote Flexibility: Results-focused work environment; two required office days per week during onboarding, then negotiable based on performance
  • Travel: Less than 10% annually; primarily local customer site visits — home most nights

Work Environment:

  • This role operates within a team of 13 professionals, including 10 account managers who each manage their own project portfolios. You will receive an established client base and work closely with a dedicated business development team that generates new leads. The company is investing in technology — including a custom ERP platform currently in development and AI-based tools for fabrication and estimating — creating an opportunity to shape modern processes as they are built.

Who Will Succeed in This Role:

  • The ideal candidate is someone who has come up through the industrial trades — a field person, fabricator, or millwright who grew into estimating and project management. You understand that industrial customers hand you a napkin sketch (or nothing at all) and expect you to price and manage a half-million-dollar project accurately. You are self-directed, technically credible, and comfortable owning a project from first conversation to final invoice.
