Remote Structural Engineer information

What is a Remote Structural Engineer job?

A Remote Structural Engineer designs, analyzes, and reviews building and infrastructure projects while working from a remote location. They use software like AutoCAD, Revit, and structural analysis tools to ensure structures are safe and compliant with regulations. Communication with clients, architects, and construction teams is done through virtual meetings, emails, and cloud-based collaboration tools. This role allows engineers to work flexibly while contributing to various projects worldwide.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Remote Structural Engineer position, and why are they important?

A Remote Structural Engineer requires a strong background in structural analysis, design principles, and a degree in civil or structural engineering, often with a Professional Engineer (PE) license. Proficiency in industry-standard software such as AutoCAD, Revit, SAP2000, and ETABS is crucial, along with familiarity with building codes and standards. Effective communication, time management, and self-motivation distinguish top remote structural engineers in a virtual team environment. These abilities ensure engineers can independently deliver accurate designs, meet deadlines, and collaborate seamlessly with clients and multidisciplinary teams from a remote setting.

What does a typical workday look like for a Remote Structural Engineer, and how do they stay connected with their team?

A typical workday for a Remote Structural Engineer involves performing structural calculations, preparing design drawings and reports, reviewing construction documents, and coordinating with architects and other engineers through virtual meetings. Team communication is maintained using collaboration tools like Slack, Microsoft Teams, and project management platforms to ensure everyone is aligned on project goals and timelines. Remote structural engineers often participate in regular video conferences and file-sharing activities to review work and provide feedback. This setup enables them to efficiently contribute to projects while enjoying the flexibility of a remote work environment.

Is AI replacing civil engineers?

AI is transforming aspects of civil engineering by automating tasks like data analysis, design optimization, and project management. However, the role of a structural engineer remains essential for overseeing projects, applying engineering judgment, and ensuring safety, as AI tools are used to support rather than replace human expertise. Civil engineers need to adapt by developing skills in digital tools and data analysis to stay relevant in an evolving industry.

Job description

Description

Your role at GEI.

GEI is seeking an experienced structural engineer to join our dams and water resources consulting practice.  Dams, reservoirs, hydroelectric developments, and other water resources facilities are crucial components of our nation’s infrastructure, providing clean energy, water supply, and flood control.  GEI serves public and private clients operating some of the largest and most interesting water resources projects in the world.  Our roles include designing new facilities, upgrading existing developments, evaluating safety, and assessing risks.  As part of GEI’s dams and water resources practice, you will work with the leading experts in dams and dam safety at one of the premier firms in the industry.

This position can be filled in our Woburn or Franklin (MA), Bedford (NH), Portland (ME), or Ithaca (NY) offices, with an expectation of about three days a week in-office (i.e., about two days remote).  Dams in our clients’ portfolios are in some of the most spectacularly scenic parts of the country, including the Connecticut River Valley in Vermont and New Hampshire, the lakes of central Maine, the Rocky Mountains in Colorado, and the Sierra Nevada Mountains in California.  Work will occasionally require the ability and willingness to hike moderate distances (5+ miles), traverse steep terrain, climb ladders, enter narrow galleries, and access remote sites by off-road vehicle and helicopter.

Essential Responsibilities & Duties
  • Serve as structural lead, and/or project/task manager.
  • Oversee and review designs developed by staff engineers. Mentor and promote technical development of staff engineers.
  • Analyze new and existing concrete gravity dams, arch dams, buttress dams, spillways, powerhouses, intake towers, penstocks, dam gates, and similar structures for stresses, stability, and performance under extreme loads.
  • Analyze and design other facilities as needed, including foundations, retaining walls, temporary works, and special structures.
  • Develop and evaluate alternatives for new facilities and upgrades to existing projects.
  • Complete detailed design calculations and prepare contract documents and technical specifications.
  • Inspect ongoing dam and water resources construction projects for conformance with design requirements.
  • Inspect existing projects as part of regulatory compliance programs (e.g., FERC Part 12D).
  • Participate in semi-quantitative risk analysis workshops.
  • Prepare formal written reports, give presentations, and participate in internal and client meetings.
  • Prepare scopes of work, budgets, and schedules.
 Minimum Qualifications
  • B.S. in Civil Engineering from an accredited program.
  • 7 to 15+ years’ experience in structural engineering related to dams and water resources structures.
  • Professional Engineer licensure or the ability to obtain licensure within one year of hire.
  • Experience with structural analysis software (SAP2000/STAAD/RISA/ANSYS, etc.) and AutoCAD.
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Ability to travel on temporary assignments.
  • Willingness and ability to work in the field and in inclement weather.
Desired Qualifications
  • Experience managing multi-discipline design projects.
  • Experience in analysis and design of hydraulic structures.
  • M.S. in Structural Engineering.
  • Experience with Revit modeling or BIM.
  • Structural Engineer licensure.
