In this virtual position, your duties involve creating a database infrastructure that meets the needs of each client with whom you work. Part of your job involves assessing the specific needs of the client and designing appropriate solutions. You build or configure software, hardware, or cloud-computing systems, and you provide support and training for the employees who use the system. Other responsibilities include making updates, backing up data, and building and monitoring the network that connects to the data storage system.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote Storage Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Storage Engineer, you need strong expertise in storage technologies, data management, and backup solutions, typically backed by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with systems like SAN/NAS, cloud storage platforms (e.g., AWS, Azure), and certifications such as CompTIA Storage+ or vendor-specific credentials are highly valued. Excellent problem-solving, communication, and self-management skills help you address issues efficiently while collaborating across remote teams. These skills and qualities ensure robust data availability, security, and seamless support for distributed enterprise environments.

How do Remote Storage Engineers typically collaborate with on-site IT teams to resolve storage issues?

Remote Storage Engineers frequently work closely with on-site IT teams to diagnose and resolve storage-related incidents. This collaboration often involves remote access to systems, regular video or conference calls, and utilizing ticketing systems to track progress. Strong communication skills are essential, as Remote Storage Engineers must clearly document troubleshooting steps and coordinate actions, sometimes even guiding on-site staff through physical hardware checks or replacements. This teamwork ensures efficient resolution of issues despite physical distance.

Job description

Job Description Do you enjoy leading complex construction projects that shape how people and goods move through one of Michigan's busiest urban regions. As the engineering manager licensed 14 (construction engineer) for the Michigan Department of Transportation's (MDOT) Detroit Transportation Service Center, you will lead professional engineering staff and technicians and guide construction operations that deliver critical MDOT transportation projects. In this role, you will coordinate with TSC leadership, regional partners, contractors and MDOT's central office in Lansing to ensure projects are delivered successfully while maintaining alignment across the department.

Your work will support highly visible projects along major transportation corridors that serve millions of travelers and commercial vehicles moving through Metro Detroit. Are you energized by solving challenging engineering problems and managing projects that require innovative construction solutions. Detroit's dense urban infrastructure creates opportunities to work on projects that many engineers only encounter once in their careers.

Upcoming work includes building a 14-foot diameter drainage tunnel (an uncommon infrastructure project completed only once before), reconfiguring a freeway interchange, and rebuilding and widening a freeway. Recent work included a bridge replacement where the structure was assembled and rolled into place, minimizing disruption within a heavily traveled corridor. These projects require creative problem solving, technical expertise and strong leadership to successfully deliver complex infrastructure improvements.

Do you enjoy mentoring engineers and technicians and building strong, high-performing teams. In this role, you will help develop the next generation of transportation professionals by supporting the technical and professional growth of staff. Your leadership will help ensure MDOT continues to deliver innovative infrastructure solutions that serve and connect people, communities and the economy through transportation while maintaining excellence in project delivery across Michigan's largest urban region.

As the next engineering manager licensed 14, you will be responsible for: Managing the delivery of TSC transportation processes for in-house construction engineering, inspection and oversight of transportation projects, as well as acting as the engineer of record for MDOT construction contracts as assigned. Initiating and maintaining contact with local communities to jointly review and resolve transportation issues. Proactively work with the TSC manager to meet the operational needs of external customers and negotiate agreements where appropriate.

Performing functions of a manager, including coordinating, assigning and training staff in conjunction with the TSC manager and region training coordinator. Providing direction and oversight of staff activities and practices, determining best practices and ensuring the sharing of these best practices across the state. Implementing and administering processes and process improvements to ensure delivery of high-quality products and services.

Begin your journey with MDOT today. This position requires possession of a valid driver's license to perform field reviews and respond to emergencies. The "Salary" listed above is a range that reflects the minimum rate through the maximum rate of the Engineer Manager Licensed 14 position.
