Responsibilities:

The SQL Database Administrator will support Barrow Wise's State of Illinois Managed Data Services project and perform the following duties:

  • Install, configure, and maintain cutting-edge database management systems utilizing Azure and SQL Server 2025, ensuring they are robust and reliable.
  • Navigate the complexities of database migrations, where your expertise will ensure data integrity and availability every step of the way.
  • Craft and implement innovative backup and recovery strategies that truly protect our valuable data assets.
  • Monitor and optimize database performance, unlocking maximum efficiency that supports our dynamic application needs.
  • Collaborate closely with development teams to design and enhance database schemas that not only meet but also exceed application requirements.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve database issues with creative solutions, turning challenges into opportunities.
  • Create and maintain comprehensive documentation that serves as a roadmap for our database systems and processes.
  • Stay ahead of the curve by recommending industry best practices and exploring emerging technologies in the realm of database management.
  • Provide top-notch Solution Architecture and guidance throughout projects, from the creation of database designs to the final delivery, ensuring quality and excellence.
  • Uphold and promote ITIL version 4 Best Practices, ensuring we're aligned with the highest industry standards.
  • Analyze trends to anticipate future needs and trends, meticulously document license requirements, and strategically plan for capacity needs.
  • Work remotely, or in Chicago, IL/Rockville, MD

An ideal candidate has the following:

  • U.S. Citizenship
  • Bachelor's degree
  • Microsoft Certification: Azure Database Administrator Associate, Preferred
  • Five (5) years of professional experience as a SQL Server Application DBA with MS SQL Server 2014 and up.
  • Five (5) years of experience with 24x7 support, managing support queues, and meeting SLA's.
  • Five (5) years of experience in reporting services; Microsoft Reporting Services and Business Objects.
  • Five (5) years of experience in database design principles in a data warehousing environment, including database logical and physical design.
  • Five (5) years of experience with SQL database performing tuning, creation of the right indexing strategy to meet data growth needs, and performance monitoring and query optimization using SQL Profiler.
  • Five (5) years of experience in providing code reviews, tuning feedback, and monitoring the team.
  • Five (5) years of experience in effectively communicating and documenting technical information
  • Ability to work independently and meet deadlines
