What does a remote SQL data engineer do?

A Remote SQL Data Engineer designs, develops, and maintains databases and data pipelines using SQL technologies, all while working from a remote location. They are responsible for ensuring data is collected, stored, and retrieved efficiently and securely. Their work often involves writing complex SQL queries, optimizing database performance, and collaborating with other teams to support data-driven decision-making. They may also manage ETL (Extract, Transform, Load) processes and help integrate data from multiple sources to support analytics and business intelligence.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote SQL data engineer?

To thrive as a Remote SQL Data Engineer, you need strong proficiency in SQL, data modeling, and ETL processes, often supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Experience with database management systems like Microsoft SQL Server, PostgreSQL, or MySQL, as well as tools such as SSIS or cloud platforms like AWS and Azure, is typically required. Excellent problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication are essential soft skills for collaborating remotely and conveying technical information. These abilities are important to ensure accurate data management, seamless data integration, and reliable performance in a distributed work environment.

How does a remote SQL data engineer typically collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure data integrity and project success?

As a Remote SQL Data Engineer, you will frequently work with data analysts, software developers, and business stakeholders to understand data requirements, design robust database solutions, and troubleshoot data issues. Collaboration often occurs through virtual meetings, project management tools, and shared documentation platforms. Clear communication and proactive updates are essential, as you'll need to ensure that data pipelines are reliable and align with the needs of both technical and non-technical team members. Regular code reviews and knowledge-sharing sessions help maintain data integrity and foster a cohesive remote team environment.

The Information Technology team supports this mission by delivering secure, scalable, cloud-native technology solutions that improve business operations, enable efficient data exchange, and support future growth in analytics and artificial intelligence.
Position Summary
The Data Engineer is responsible for designing, building, deploying, and supporting cloud-native data platforms, integrations, and data pipelines that enable secure and reliable data exchange between internal applications, external business partners, operational systems, and analytics platforms.
This role serves as a key technical resource supporting Application Engineers, business stakeholders, and external trading partners by ensuring data is accessible, trusted, secure, and available where and when it is needed. The Data Engineer works closely with software development teams to deliver scalable data services, integration frameworks, and operational data solutions within Microsoft Azure.
The ideal candidate combines strong technical expertise in data integration and cloud technologies with a practical understanding of business processes, application architecture, and healthcare data exchange.
Responsibilities
  • Design, develop, deploy, and support cloud-native data solutions within Microsoft Azure.
  • Build and maintain scalable data ingestion, transformation, and orchestration pipelines using Azure services and modern integration patterns.
  • Develop and support integrations between internal applications, third-party vendors, clients, healthcare partners, and other external data trading partners.
  • Design and implement APIs, file exchange processes, and system-to-system integrations that support business operations and application development.
  • Collaborate closely with Application Engineers to design data access patterns, integration architectures, and reusable data services.
  • Create and maintain operational data models that support application functionality and business processes.
  • Build and support Azure-based storage platforms, databases, and data services that enable application and analytics workloads.
  • Develop secure processes for exchanging data through APIs, flat files, SFTP, EDI transactions, healthcare interoperability standards, and other integration mechanisms as required.
  • Support real-time and near real-time data processing requirements where business needs warrant.
  • Design and implement monitoring, alerting, logging, and recovery processes for data pipelines and integrations.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve data quality, integration, performance, and reliability issues across development, test, and production environments.
  • Develop automation solutions that improve reliability, consistency, and operational efficiency.
  • Maintain documentation for integrations, data flows, APIs, pipelines, and supporting technologies.
  • Participate in architecture discussions and contribute recommendations related to scalability, reliability, performance, interoperability, and security.
  • Utilize source control, CI/CD pipelines, and DevOps practices to support reliable deployment and maintenance of data solutions.
  • Ensure compliance with company security standards and regulatory requirements related to healthcare and sensitive information.
  • Support AI, machine learning, and advanced analytics initiatives through the delivery of trusted and accessible data assets.
  • Stay current with Microsoft Azure services, modern data engineering practices, and emerging technologies.
