What is a remote software tester?

A Remote Software Tester is a professional who evaluates software applications for bugs, usability issues, and performance problems while working from a remote location. They use various testing methods, such as manual testing or automated tools, to ensure the software meets quality standards. Remote Software Testers collaborate with developers and other team members online, report issues, and help improve the overall user experience. This role requires strong attention to detail, good communication skills, and familiarity with testing frameworks and tools.

What does a remote software tester do?

As a remote software tester, your job is to provide quality assurance or QA for software. In this role, you work from home to identify bugs, test specific features, and support the documenting of any relevant information the programmers need to know about. Remote software testers often specialize in particular types of software, such as medical systems or video games. The basic duties are the same regardless of industry, but some companies may emphasize factors like reliability, user experience, or challenge above others. In this role, you usually work as part of a larger team and may need to work unusual hours as needed.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote software tester, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Software Tester, you need a solid understanding of software testing methodologies, attention to detail, and experience with manual and automated testing, often supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with tools like Selenium, JIRA, TestRail, and version control systems, as well as certifications such as ISTQB, is typically required. Excellent communication, problem-solving abilities, and self-motivation are crucial soft skills for collaborating with remote teams and managing tasks independently. These skills ensure thorough testing, clear reporting, and efficient teamwork, which are vital for delivering high-quality software in a distributed work environment.

How do remote software testers effectively communicate and collaborate with development teams?

Remote Software Testers often use a combination of collaboration tools such as Slack, Jira, and video conferencing platforms to stay connected with development teams. Regular stand-up meetings, clear documentation of test cases, and timely bug reporting are essential to ensure that everyone is aligned on project goals and progress. Being proactive in asking questions and providing feedback helps bridge the distance and fosters a collaborative environment, even when working across different time zones. Effective communication and organizational skills are key to overcoming the challenges of remote teamwork.

Posted 8 days ago

Job description

About the Role

We are hiring a C++ Software Engineer to join our growing Endpoint State and Control team, focused on defining and enforcing endpoint behavior across a managed environment. We build the foundational controls that let IT teams define, enforce, and maintain a strong security posture across every endpoint they manage. Trusted by over 40,000 customers globally, your work will directly power the tools IT teams and MSPs (managed service providers) rely on to monitor, manage, and secure endpoints at scale.

If you are Software Engineer with strong C++ fundamentals and a genuine interest in systems-level software, who thrives on solving complex technical challenges and is passionate about building high-quality, reliable software for real-world impact, this is the role for you!

What You’ll be Doing

  • Testing Ownership: You will begin by building and owning the testing infrastructure and test coverage for two systems, both active C++ development projects.
  • Feature Development: With your strong C++ fundamentals, a genuine interest in systems-level software, being curious in a domain where many answers don’t yet exist, you will begin to take on feature development contributions for our development projects.
  • Other Duties as needed

About You

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Technology, or related technical field
  • 1–3 years of C++ experience
  • Solid C++ fundamentals: memory management, RAII, STL, smart pointers,

build systems (CMake preferred)

  • Interest in systems-level software: OS APIs, processes, file systems,

services — understanding what software "beneath the app" does

  • Experience writing or maintaining automated tests in C++ (Google Test,

Catch2, CTest, or equivalent)

  • Comfortable asking questions and working in an environment where some

answers are still being discovered

  • Comfortable adapting workflows to incorporate AI tools
  • Strong learning orientation - ability to ramp on new systems, APIs, and

patterns through documentation, code reading, and mentorship

Preferred:

  • Any Windows systems programming exposure: Windows APIs, WINAPI, WinBase,

Registry access, process management - even if self-taught or project-based

  • Familiarity with CMake + vcpkg build environments
  • Experience with test frameworks that support mocking or dependency injection

(Google Mock, etc.)

  • Any exposure to cross-platform C++ (code that compiles on Windows AND

macOS or Linux)

  • Background in or genuine interest in security software (endpoint protection,

antivirus, system hardening)

  • Exposure to ctest or structured CI test pipelines
