What is a remote software internship?

A remote software internship is a temporary work experience in software development that allows interns to perform their tasks from a location outside of the company’s physical office, usually from home. Interns work on real-world projects, collaborate with teams using digital communication tools, and gain practical skills in areas like coding, debugging, and software design. This format offers flexibility, exposure to industry practices, and the opportunity to build a professional network without relocating.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote software intern?

To thrive as a Remote Software Intern, you need a solid grasp of programming fundamentals, problem-solving skills, and typically enrollment in or completion of a computer science or related degree. Familiarity with version control systems like Git, collaboration tools such as Slack or Zoom, and basic knowledge of integrated development environments (IDEs) are common requirements. Proactive communication, self-motivation, and adaptability are standout soft skills that help interns excel in remote environments. These skills and qualities are vital for effective learning, contributing to distributed teams, and successfully completing projects with minimal supervision.

What are some common challenges faced during a remote software internship, and how can they be managed?

Remote software interns often face challenges such as limited face-to-face interaction with mentors, managing time zones, and staying motivated without a traditional office environment. To overcome these, it's important to set a consistent daily schedule, proactively communicate with your team using collaboration tools, and participate in virtual meetings and code reviews. Seeking regular feedback and documenting your progress can also help you stay engaged and on track with your learning objectives.

Is it worth doing a remote software internship?

A remote software internship provides practical experience, skill development, and networking opportunities in software development. It can enhance your resume and prepare you for full-time roles, especially if it involves working with real projects and tools like Git and Agile methodologies.

Job description

Position Overview

GSI Environmental Inc. (GSI) seeks a highly innovative AI Engineer to join our growing team and help how artificial intelligence, automation, and modern business systems shape the way our firm operates. In this role, you will design and deliver AI-powered applications, automations, dashboards, and data-driven tools that boost productivity across every part of the organization.

You'll partner closely with both our technical project teams and corporate departments to find where emerging technology can simplify workflows, sharpen decision-making, and eliminate repetitive manual tasks. This role will provide a rare opportunity to build a function from the ground up, harnessing the power of AI to help solve complex environmental problems.

About Us

We are a privately held, employee-owned company offering superior compensation, benefits, and professional development. GSI is highly respected nationally and internationally for the quality of its professional environmental services and the technically advanced projects it has completed over its 40 years of operation. GSI leadership promotes a collaborative, fun, and growth-oriented workplace, resulting in strong staff retention and high client satisfaction.

GSI employs cross-disciplinary teams of environmental engineers and scientists focused on bringing innovative solutions to our clients’ toughest environmental challenges pertaining to water resources, air quality, land restoration, sustainability, renewable energy, ecological services, data science, toxicology, and energy and critical minerals production. Headquartered in Houston, Texas, GSI operates 13 offices across nine states, Texas, California, Colorado, Washington, Montana, Georgia, North Carolina, Virginia, and New York, with additional remote staff located throughout the United States. Our talented staff of environmental professionals performs projects nationwide and internationally.

Key Responsibilities

AI & Application Development

  • Design, develop, and deploy AI-powered applications, assistants, and workflows that solve real business and environmental problems.
  • Develop custom internal software, portals, and applications that improve operational efficiency.
  • Evaluate new AI platforms, large language models (LLMs), and automation technologies, and rapidly prototype high-value use cases.

Data, Analytics & Integration

  • Build dashboards and business intelligence tools that deliver actionable insight to leadership and project teams.
  • Integrate business and technical systems through APIs, databases, and cloud services.
  • Support data management, reporting, and analytics initiatives—including work with scientific, financial, and regulatory data.

Automation & Enablement

  • Create automated workflows that reduce manual effort and streamline business processes.
  • Train and support employees in adopting new AI tools, and champion a culture of practical, responsible AI use.

Governance & Strategy

  • Develop AI governance standards and best practices that ensure secure, ethical, and responsible use of emerging technologies—particularly important given GSI's confidential client, litigation, and government project data.
  • Partner with IT and leadership to establish a long-term technology and innovation roadmap.
Location

This position is preferably based at or near one of GSI's offices, with our Houston headquarters as the ideal location. Hybrid or remote arrangements will be considered for exceptionally qualified candidates.

Qualifications/Experience
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Data Science, Information Systems, or a related field.
  • Ability to develop software applications, automation tools, business intelligence solutions, or AI-enabled technologies.
  • Hands-on experience with Generative AI, LLMs, AI agents, or machine learning technologies.
  • Strong programming skills in Python, SQL, JavaScript, C#, or similar languages.
  • Experience building dashboards and analytics with Power BI, Tableau, or comparable platforms.
  • Experience integrating systems via APIs, databases, and cloud technologies.
  • Strong grasp of data architecture, security, governance, and software development best practices.
  • Proven ability to translate complex business problems into practical technology solutions.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to explain technical concepts to non-technical audiences.
  • Experience with Microsoft Power Platform (Power Apps, Power Automate, Power BI) or similar low-code tools—GSI is a Microsoft 365 environment.
  • Experience building LLM/RAG applications, document automation, or AI assistants for knowledge work.
  • A passion for continuous learning and staying current with rapidly evolving AI technologies.
  • A passion for the environment is a strong plus!
