While both roles require technical expertise, the manager role emphasizes leadership and coordination, whereas the developer role centers on technical execution.

How does a Remote Software Engineering Manager effectively foster team collaboration and communication across different time zones?

As a Remote Software Engineering Manager, you'll be responsible for ensuring strong communication and collaboration among team members who may be distributed globally. This typically involves leveraging asynchronous tools like Slack, project management platforms, and regular video meetings to keep everyone aligned. You'll need to set clear expectations around availability, documentation, and handoffs, and proactively address challenges such as time zone overlap and cultural differences. Establishing a culture of transparency and frequent feedback helps maintain engagement and productivity within a remote environment.

What is a Remote Software Engineering Manager?

A Remote Software Engineering Manager is a leadership professional who oversees software development teams that work from various locations, rather than in a traditional office setting. Their responsibilities include managing team performance, guiding technical direction, coordinating projects, and ensuring effective communication among remote team members. They also play a key role in hiring, mentoring, and supporting engineers to achieve both individual and organizational goals. This role requires strong technical expertise, excellent communication skills, and the ability to manage projects and people in a distributed work environment.

What Does a Remote Software Engineering Manager Do?

As a remote software engineering manager, you work from home to manage a team that develops or enhances computer software programs. In this remote role, you direct a team of employees to design computer programs, develop solutions to engineering challenges, and enhance the capabilities of existing software and systems. Your responsibilities span project management duties, team building and recruitment activities, and collaboration with information technology teams and other departments. You also consult with company executives to determine software requirements and limitations and provide updates on projects. You must understand company standards and follow organizational guidelines to achieve specific goals.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote Software Engineering Manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Software Engineering Manager, you need strong leadership abilities, deep technical expertise in software development, and a track record of managing engineering teams, often supported by a degree in computer science or related fields. Familiarity with project management tools (like Jira or Asana), version control systems (such as Git), and collaboration platforms (like Slack or Zoom) is crucial, along with Agile or Scrum certifications. Exceptional communication, emotional intelligence, and the ability to motivate and mentor remote teams are standout soft skills in this role. These combined skills enable effective project delivery, foster team cohesion across distances, and ensure continuous team growth and innovation.

Job description

SONIFI Health delivers interactive technology proven to improve patient experience, health outcomes and hospital productivity. SONIFI Health provides interactive services to over 30,000 rooms across 130 hospitals throughout the United States. Hospitals partner with SONIFI Health because of our vast engagement and integration expertise.

Help shape the future of healthcare technology through thoughtful engineering, collaboration, and continuous growth. Weโ€™re looking for a Software Engineer who is ready to independently deliver high quality software solutions, contribute across the product development lifecycle, and continue expanding their technical expertise. This role offers the opportunity to build and improve technology that directly supports patient engagement, hospital operations, and the healthcare experience.

ย What youโ€™ll do:

Reporting to the Director of Software Engineering, this role contributes across the full product development lifecycle, including requirements definition, design, development, testing, debugging, and deployment. You will work within a product focused engineering team to independently deliver small to medium-sized features and components while collaborating with engineering, product management, project management, and testing teams. Success in this role requires a solid technical foundation, sound engineering judgment, and a commitment to building reliable, maintainable software.

โ€ข Analyze, design, develop, test, debug, and document software applications with minimal assistance, delivering well-defined features and technical solutions

โ€ข Build new product capabilities, enhance existing applications, and resolve defects across shared codebases while following established software engineering standards and best practices

โ€ข Partner with engineering, product management, project management, and testing teams to clarify requirements, assess technical feasibility, estimate development effort, and support successful delivery

โ€ข Write clean, maintainable, and testable code, including unit tests that address expected functionality, edge cases, errors, performance, reliability, and security considerations

โ€ข Apply systematic debugging and problem-solving approaches to diagnose complex issues, identify technical solutions, and support less experienced team members with troubleshooting

โ€ข Contribute to technical design and implementation decisions while ensuring solutions align with broader service architecture and production requirements

โ€ข Participate in team planning, documentation, knowledge sharing, process improvements, and discussions around priorities and implementation approaches

ย What youโ€™ll need:

Weโ€™re looking for a software engineer with a solid technical foundation who can work independently within a defined area while continuing to grow their skills, technical breadth, and impact.

โ€ข Bachelorโ€™s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related technical field and 2+ years of industry experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience

โ€ข Strong knowledge of software engineering methodologies, development best practices, testing, debugging, and structured problem solving

โ€ข Experience with high level programming languages such as C, C++, Python, and web based technologies such as JavaScript and HTML

โ€ข Ability to independently write clean, understandable, and testable code that accounts for expected functionality, edge cases, errors, and production considerations

โ€ข Experience designing and troubleshooting software within a broader application or service architecture, with consideration for performance, reliability, fault tolerance, and security

โ€ข Strong analytical, deductive reasoning, written communication, and verbal communication skills with the ability to collaborate effectively across engineering and product teams

Preferred:

โ€ข Experience with scripting languages and development automation

โ€ข Experience working across multiple technologies or application components

โ€ข Experience with modern web, cloud, service based, or distributed application environments

โ€ข Experience contributing to team documentation, technical discussions, and continuous improvement initiatives

ย Together, we can build your future!
