What is a Remote Software Engineering Manager?

A Remote Software Engineering Manager is a leadership professional who oversees software development teams that work from various locations, rather than in a traditional office setting. This role requires strong technical expertise, excellent communication skills, and the ability to manage projects and people in a distributed work environment.

What Does a Remote Software Engineering Manager Do?

In this remote role, you direct a team of employees to design computer programs, develop solutions to engineering challenges, and enhance the capabilities of existing software and systems. Key responsibilities

  • Lead the design and development of new microservices in Node.js to break apart a monolithic application.

  • Build serverless applications and event-driven systems on AWS.

  • Collaborate with product, operations, and senior leadership to translate business workflows into scalable technical solutions.

Job description

A long-standing, nationally recognized financial services company is making a major investment in modernizing its core technology. Theyโ€™re stable, profitable, and operate at meaningful scaleโ€”but their next chapter requires a shift from a large C#/.NET monolith to a modern, service-oriented, serverless architecture.

This is a key engineering hire who will play a central role in that transformation.

What Youโ€™ll Do

  • Lead the design and development of new microservices in Node.js, helping break apart a mission-critical monolith.
  • Build serverless applications and event-driven systems on AWS.
  • Collaborate with product, operations, and senior leadership to translate business workflows into scalable technical solutions.
  • Improve reliability, performance, and observability across the platform.
  • Contribute to architectural decisions, coding standards, and modernization strategy.
  • Support and gradually deprecate legacy .NET components as new services come online.

What Makes This Role Unique

  • Stability + transformation: You get the security of an established company with the excitement of a major rebuild.
  • High visibility: This is not โ€œone of many engineers.โ€ Youโ€™re a core contributor shaping the next decade of the platform.
  • Modern stack: Greenfield microservices, serverless patterns, and a chance to influence tooling and architecture.
  • Real impact: Your work directly affects internal teams, customers, and the companyโ€™s ability to scale.

What You Bring

  • 4+ years of professional software engineering experience.
  • Strong backend fundamentals and experience with Node.js (or willingness to ramp quickly).
  • Familiarity with C#/.NET is a plus, especially for navigating and extracting logic from the monolith.
  • Experience with AWS, serverless frameworks, or event-driven architectures.
  • Solid understanding of distributed systems, API design, and cloud-native patterns.
  • A builderโ€™s mindsetโ€”comfortable working through ambiguity and shaping new systems.

Why This Role Matters

This company is entering a multi-year modernization effort that will define its future. Theyโ€™re looking for an engineer who wants ownership, technical influence, and the chance to help architect a modern platform from the ground upโ€”without the volatility of a startup.
