What is a remote software developer?

A Remote Software Developer is a professional who designs, builds, and maintains software applications while working from a location outside of a traditional office, often from home or another remote setting. These developers collaborate with team members using online communication and project management tools. Remote work allows for greater flexibility and access to global job opportunities, but it also requires strong self-motivation and communication skills. Companies hire remote software developers to tap into a wider talent pool and to offer flexible work arrangements.

What does a remote software developer do?

Remote software developers design and create computer software programs and systems for their employer or client. Unlike in-house software developers, remote software developers work from home or another location outside of the office. As a remote software developer, you discuss the kind of program you need to create, making sure to clarify with your department or with your client what they need in their application. You may develop an entirely new program or improve an existing one. Remote developers are responsible for a program’s overall framework, and they design precise workflow charts that explain to programmers what code is needed for different aspects of the program. Remote software developers also design tests and protocols for the QA department to follow when they are testing the application.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote software developer?

To thrive as a Remote Software Developer, you need strong programming skills, problem-solving ability, and a relevant degree or equivalent experience in computer science or software engineering. Familiarity with common development tools (such as Git, Visual Studio Code, and CI/CD platforms) and frameworks, as well as knowledge of cloud services, are typically required. Excellent communication, self-motivation, and time management skills help you collaborate effectively and stay productive in a remote setting. These skills and qualities are essential for delivering high-quality software, meeting deadlines, and contributing to distributed teams.

How do remote software developers stay connected and collaborate effectively with their teams?

Remote software developers typically use a variety of collaboration tools, such as Slack, Microsoft Teams, and Zoom, to communicate with colleagues and participate in daily stand-ups or sprint planning meetings. Version control systems like GitHub or GitLab are essential for code collaboration and review. Regular check-ins, clear documentation, and agile workflows help ensure everyone stays aligned and productive despite working from different locations. Proactive communication and time management are crucial for overcoming the challenges of remote work and successfully contributing to team goals.

Pattern has been named one of the fastest growing tech companies headquartered in North America by Deloitte and one of best-led companies by Inc. We place employee experience at the center of our business model and have been recognized as one of Newsweek’s Global Most Loved Workplaces®.

Role Summary

As a Sr Software Engineer, you will lead and oversee the software engineering function for Pattern’s central administrative, authentication, authorization, and security infrastructure. In this role, you will serve as a key technical leader for our mission-critical identity and access platform, partnering with other engineering leaders and cross-functional teams to ensure its success. Because this core system underpins all of Pattern's operations, you will partner closely with a wide variety of cross-functional teams to field, prioritize, and build a high volume of feature requests while ensuring the ongoing maintenance, stability, and high performance of existing applications.

What is a day in the life of a Sr Software Engineer (IAM)?
  • Maintain, scale, and optimize existing central authentication and authorization applications.

  • Triage, scope, and build incoming feature requests from cross-functional teams across Pattern.

  • Write, test, and deploy clean back-end code using Ruby and Go.

  • Design and enforce fine-grained RBAC across internal platforms and external APIs.

  • Collaborate with engineers and product stakeholders to integrate core security services.

  • Automate admin workflows and integrate AI solutions to enhance operational efficiency.

  • Monitor performance, reduce technical debt, and ensure high system availability.

What will I need to thrive in this role?
  • 3+ years of back-end software engineering experience focused on core security, identity, or platform systems.

  • Proven experience building and maintaining central Authentication and Authorization systems.

  • Direct experience with RBAC/ABAC frameworks and security protocols (OAuth 2.0, OIDC, SAML, JWT).

  • Strong capability to manage competing feature requests from multiple internal teams while maintaining legacy codebases.

  • Solid background with relational databases (PostgreSQL) and REST/gRPC APIs.

What does high performance look like?
  • You are seen and trusted as a primary subject matter expert and partner for central Auth/Authz and admin tooling across all of Pattern.

  • You strike an effective balance between rapidly delivering requested features for partner teams and systematically maintaining/refactoring existing applications to ensure system stability and reliability while preventing technical debt.

  • You communicate proactively with cross-functional stakeholders, setting realistic timelines and clear integration pathways for their feature requests.

  • You ensure our central Auth system is fault-tolerant, sub-millisecond in performance, and seamlessly adopted by all internal applications and external platforms.

  • You effectively delegate and monitor repeatable, task-focused feature and maintenance work with junior engineers, optimizing your time across both strategy and execution.

What is the team like?
You will partner with Engineering Leadership and collaborate with engineers across our global organization. The team follows a hybrid work schedule: Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday in the office, and work from home on Tuesday and Friday.
Sounds great! What’s the company culture?
  • Game Changers: A game changer is someone who looks at problems with an open mind and shares new ideas with team members, regularly reassesses existing plans and attaches a realistic timeline to goals, makes profitable, productive, and innovative contributions, and actively pursues improvements to Pattern’s processes and outcomes.

  • Data Fanatics: A data fanatic is someone who recognizes problems and seeks to understand them through data, draws unbiased conclusions based on data that lead to actionable solutions, and continues to track the effects of the solutions using data.

  • Partner Obsessed: An individual who is partner obsessed clearly explains the status of projects to partners and relies on constructive feedback, actively listens to partner’s expectations and delivers results that exceed them, prioritizes the needs of your partners, and takes the time to create a personable experience for those interacting with Pattern.

  • Team of Doers: Someone who is a part of a team of doers uplifts team members and recognizes their specific contributions, takes initiative to help in any circumstance, actively contributes to supporting improvements, and holds themselves accountable to the team as well as to partners.

What is the hiring process?

  2. A technical assessment

  3. An onsite interview with a panel of department leaders

  4. Reference checks

  5. Executive review
