What is a remote software developer?

A Remote Software Developer is a professional who designs, builds, and maintains software applications while working from a location outside of a traditional office, often from home or another remote setting. These developers collaborate with team members using online communication and project management tools. Remote work allows for greater flexibility and access to global job opportunities, but it also requires strong self-motivation and communication skills. Companies hire remote software developers to tap into a wider talent pool and to offer flexible work arrangements.

What does a remote software developer do?

Remote software developers design and create computer software programs and systems for their employer or client. Unlike in-house software developers, remote software developers work from home or another location outside of the office. As a remote software developer, you discuss the kind of program you need to create, making sure to clarify with your department or with your client what they need in their application. You may develop an entirely new program or improve an existing one. Remote developers are responsible for a program’s overall framework, and they design precise workflow charts that explain to programmers what code is needed for different aspects of the program. Remote software developers also design tests and protocols for the QA department to follow when they are testing the application.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote software developer?

To thrive as a Remote Software Developer, you need strong programming skills, problem-solving ability, and a relevant degree or equivalent experience in computer science or software engineering. Familiarity with common development tools (such as Git, Visual Studio Code, and CI/CD platforms) and frameworks, as well as knowledge of cloud services, are typically required. Excellent communication, self-motivation, and time management skills help you collaborate effectively and stay productive in a remote setting. These skills and qualities are essential for delivering high-quality software, meeting deadlines, and contributing to distributed teams.

How do remote software developers stay connected and collaborate effectively with their teams?

Remote software developers typically use a variety of collaboration tools, such as Slack, Microsoft Teams, and Zoom, to communicate with colleagues and participate in daily stand-ups or sprint planning meetings. Version control systems like GitHub or GitLab are essential for code collaboration and review. Regular check-ins, clear documentation, and agile workflows help ensure everyone stays aligned and productive despite working from different locations. Proactive communication and time management are crucial for overcoming the challenges of remote work and successfully contributing to team goals.

Job description

We made history and now we work to transform the future - for our customers, our communities and our families. You'll see your work on the road every day, helping people move freely and pursue their dreams. At Ford, you can build more than vehicles. Come build what matters.

Product Development uses design thinking & user experience methods to deliver breakthrough products and services that delight our customers. We bring innovative, exciting, and sustainable ideas to life.We have opportunities around the world for you to contribute to advancements in autonomy, electrification, smart mobility technologies, and more!

You'll have...

  • Bachelor's Degree

  • 8 + Years extensive professional software engineering experience, including a track record of leading technically challenging projects to completion.
  • Strong general-purpose programming skills and the ability to learn new languages, frameworks, and codebases quickly.
  • Proven debugging and root-cause-analysis skills across unfamiliar code.
  • Experience reviewing others' code and mentoring engineers.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication; able to work directly with non-software domain experts (calibration/test engineers) and translate their needs into requirements.
  • Comfort working independently and collaboratively in a distributed, remote team

Even better, you may have...

  • Strongly preferred (experience in several of these)
  • Python - analysis tooling, data processing, packaging/distribution.
  • MATLAB - engineering toolboxes, GUIs, Compiler/MCR deployment.
  • C#/.NET - Windows desktop applications (WinForms/WPF, DevExpress).
  • Web development - JavaScript/TypeScript frontends and Java/Spring Boot (or similar) backends.
  • Cloud & DevOps - GCP (Cloud Run, BigQuery), Terraform, containers, and CI/CD pipelines.
  • Databases - SQL and NoSQL (e.g., MongoDB).
  • AI/LLM tooling - MCP servers or integrating AI assistants into developer and engineering workflows.

Nice to have

  • Automotive powertrain, calibration, or emissions domain knowledge. This is a strong plus but not required - a motivated engineer will be trained on the domain.

What success looks like

  • The team's toughest projects get unblocked and delivered.
  • Code quality and consistency improve through steady, high-quality review.
  • Users get faster, better responses to new requests and production issues.
  • The section supervisor is freed to focus on management while technical leadership is in strong hands.

In this position...

  • Our section builds and maintains the software that powertrain calibration and emissions engineers rely on every day. Our portfolio is broad and spans the full stack:
  • Desktop applications - data upload/management tools, calibration utilities, and instrument-connected apps (C#/.NET, WinForms/DevExpress).
  • Engineering analysis tools - MATLAB toolboxes and Python analytics for measurement data, emissions eKPIs, and calibration-parameter analysis.
  • Web applications - calibration-tracking and dashboard apps (Java/Spring Boot backends, JavaScript/TypeScript frontends) deployed to the cloud (GCP/Cloud Run) via modern CI/CD pipelines.
  • Data & integration services - REST/web services, upload and import pipelines, MongoDB/BigQuery data access, and MCP servers that expose our tooling and data to modern AI-assisted workflows.
  • Cloud & DevOps - Terraform-based infrastructure, containerized deployments, pipeline migrations, and TLS/cert and security-compliance work.
  • We support a large user base of calibration engineers, and our tools directly enable vehicle testing, emissions compliance, and calibration delivery.

What you'll do...

We are looking for an experienced software engineer to serve as a hands-on technical lead across this portfolio. Today, a single person (the section supervisor) fills both the management and senior-technical-lead roles. This position exists to take on the technical-lead half of that work.

You will not own a single project - you will move fluidly across many, providing senior engineering leverage wherever it is needed most. Concretely, you will:

  • Tackle the hard problems. Jump onto the most difficult or highest-risk projects and help drive them to completion - architecture, tricky bugs, performance issues, and thorny integrations (e.g., cross-thread/UI races, native handle leaks, MATLAB Compiler/MCR deployment issues, cloud pipeline failures).
  • Review pull requests. Provide thoughtful, timely code review across multiple languages and repos, raising the quality and consistency of the team's output.
  • Work directly with users. Engage with calibration engineers on new feature requests, translate their needs into clear requirements, and shape practical solutions.
  • Debug and root-cause. Investigate production issues across desktop, web, and data-pipeline systems, then fix them or guide the owning engineer to a fix.
  • Mentor and unblock. Share knowledge, set technical direction, and help other engineers (onshore and offshore) grow and stay unblocked.
  • Improve how we build. Contribute to shared infrastructure, CI/CD, package distribution, testing practices, and security/compliance hardening

You may not check every box, or your experience may look a little different from what we've outlined, but if you think you can bring value to Ford Motor Company, we encourage you to apply!
As an established global company, we offer the benefit of choice. You can choose what your Ford future will look like: will your story span the globe, or keep you close to home? Will your career be a deep dive into what you love, or a series of new teams and new skills? Will you be a leader, a changemaker, a technical expert, a culture builder...or all of the above? No matter what you choose, we offer a work life that works for you, including:
Immediate medical, dental, vision and prescription drug coverage
Flexible family care days, paid parental leave, new parent ramp-up programs, subsidized back-up child care and more
Family building benefits including adoption and surrogacy expense reimbursement, fertility treatments, and more
Vehicle discount program for employees and family members and management leases
Tuition assistance
Established and active employee resource groups
Paid time off for individual and team community service
A generous schedule of paid holidays, including the week between Christmas and New Year's Day
Paid time off and the option to purchase additional vacation time.

This position is a salary grade 7 and ranges from $99,600-$166,600

This position is a salary grade 8 and ranges from $115,000-$192,900

.
Final determination of salary grade will be based on candidate's skills and experience, and base salary will be set within the applicable range according to job scope, responsibility and competitive market value.
