What Is the Job of Remote Software Developers?

Remote software developers design and create computer software programs and systems for their employer or client. Unlike in-house software developers, remote software developers work from home or another location outside of the office. As a remote software developer, you discuss the kind of program you need to create, making sure to clarify with your department or with your client what they need in their application. You may develop an entirely new program or improve an existing one. Remote developers are responsible for a program’s overall framework, and they design precise workflow charts that explain to programmers what code is needed for different aspects of the program. Remote software developers also design tests and protocols for the QA department to follow when they are testing the application.

How do remote software developers stay connected and collaborate effectively with their teams?

Remote software developers typically use a variety of collaboration tools, such as Slack, Microsoft Teams, and Zoom, to communicate with colleagues and participate in daily stand-ups or sprint planning meetings. Version control systems like GitHub or GitLab are essential for code collaboration and review. Regular check-ins, clear documentation, and agile workflows help ensure everyone stays aligned and productive despite working from different locations. Proactive communication and time management are crucial for overcoming the challenges of remote work and successfully contributing to team goals.

What is a Remote Software Developer?

A Remote Software Developer is a professional who designs, builds, and maintains software applications while working from a location outside of a traditional office, often from home or another remote setting. These developers collaborate with team members using online communication and project management tools. Remote work allows for greater flexibility and access to global job opportunities, but it also requires strong self-motivation and communication skills. Companies hire remote software developers to tap into a wider talent pool and to offer flexible work arrangements.

Job description

**This position is a direct hire for one of our clients. This is a remote position. Eligible candidates must currently reside in the US and authorized to work in the US without visa sponsorship.**
Our client is seeking a leader to build the foundation for an AI-native engineering future. As Director of Platform Engineering, you'll shape how their teams design, build, and deliver software-owning the tools, platforms, and standards that power innovation across the organization. This is a high-impact leadership role at the center of technology, strategy, and transformation. Our ideal candidate is a technical leader who has built platform engineering functions from the ground up, operates at the intersection of infrastructure, developer tooling, and reliability
engineering, and is energized by the transition to AI-native software development. You are equally comfortable writing technical strategy for the board and jumping into a CI/CD pipeline to solve a problem.
Responsibilities
Platform Architecture & Developer Experience
  • Own the developer experience across tooling, AI integration, CI/CD, and governance
  • Set platform standards to improve speed, quality, and consistency
  • Drive adoption of AI-native SDLC practices and improve engineering velocity
  • Lead architecture for shared infrastructure, observability, deployment, and APIs

Team Leadership
  • Build and lead the Platform Engineering team
  • Develop talent and foster a culture of reliability, automation, and craftsmanship
  • Represent Platform Engineering across Product, IT, and executive leadership
  • Partner with engineering leadership on long-term technology strategy

Reliability & Operations
  • Own platform reliability, including SLOs, on-call, and incident management
  • Define observability and alerting standards across systems
  • Align with IT on boundaries between platform, infrastructure, and security

Innovation
  • Evaluate and implement tools and practices to improve productivity
  • Drive AI engineering transformation, including AI-assisted development and testing
  • Advise on platform strategy, architecture, and technical diligence
Requirements
  • 10+ years of software engineering experience, with at least 5 years in platform engineering, DevOps, or SRE leadership roles
  • Demonstrated experience building or scaling a platform engineering function, from establishing standards through growing a team
  • Strong command of cloud infrastructure (AWS primary, GCP secondary), CI/CD pipelines, and modern deployment practices
  • Hands-on experience with observability tooling (DataDog, CloudWatch, PagerDuty, or equivalent)
  • Experience leading and developing engineering teams - hiring, mentoring, and setting technical direction
  • Strong communicator who is comfortable translating platform strategy for non-technical audiences and making the case for investment
  • Proven track record of shipping: you hold teams accountable for delivery and know how to unblock them
Nice to Haves
  • Experience at a PE-backed or high-growth SaaS company
  • Familiarity with multi-product or multi-brand engineering environments
  • Hands-on experience with AI-native development tooling, agentic SDLC, or AI-assisted engineering workflows
  • Background in or familiarity with wealth management, financial services, or regulated industry software
  • Experience with MCP (Model Context Protocol), API platform design, or developer platform strategy
  • Familiarity with GitHub Actions, Terraform or IaC tooling, and container orchestration (ECS, EKS)
  • Experience running or contributing to an engineering M&A integration

Eligible candidates must reside in one of the following states: Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Maine, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Mexico, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia, or Wisconsin
