What Is the Job of Remote Software Developers?

Remote software developers design and create computer software programs and systems for their employer or client. Unlike in-house software developers, remote software developers work from home or another location outside of the office. As a remote software developer, you discuss the kind of program you need to create, making sure to clarify with your department or with your client what they need in their application. You may develop an entirely new program or improve an existing one. Remote developers are responsible for a program’s overall framework, and they design precise workflow charts that explain to programmers what code is needed for different aspects of the program. Remote software developers also design tests and protocols for the QA department to follow when they are testing the application.

Job description

A long-standing, nationally recognized financial services company is making a major investment in modernizing its core technology. They’re stable, profitable, and operate at meaningful scale—but their next chapter requires a shift from a large C#/.NET monolith to a modern, service-oriented, serverless architecture.

This is a key engineering hire who will play a central role in that transformation.

What You’ll Do

  • Lead the design and development of new microservices in Node.js, helping break apart a mission-critical monolith.
  • Build serverless applications and event-driven systems on AWS.
  • Collaborate with product, operations, and senior leadership to translate business workflows into scalable technical solutions.
  • Improve reliability, performance, and observability across the platform.
  • Contribute to architectural decisions, coding standards, and modernization strategy.
  • Support and gradually deprecate legacy .NET components as new services come online.

What Makes This Role Unique

  • Stability + transformation: You get the security of an established company with the excitement of a major rebuild.
  • High visibility: This is not “one of many engineers.” You’re a core contributor shaping the next decade of the platform.
  • Modern stack: Greenfield microservices, serverless patterns, and a chance to influence tooling and architecture.
  • Real impact: Your work directly affects internal teams, customers, and the company’s ability to scale.

What You Bring

  • 4+ years of professional software engineering experience.
  • Strong backend fundamentals and experience with Node.js (or willingness to ramp quickly).
  • Familiarity with C#/.NET is a plus, especially for navigating and extracting logic from the monolith.
  • Experience with AWS, serverless frameworks, or event-driven architectures.
  • Solid understanding of distributed systems, API design, and cloud-native patterns.
  • A builder’s mindset—comfortable working through ambiguity and shaping new systems.

Why This Role Matters

This company is entering a multi-year modernization effort that will define its future. They’re looking for an engineer who wants ownership, technical influence, and the chance to help architect a modern platform from the ground up—without the volatility of a startup.
