Description & Requirements
The Data Scientist II supports the United States Special Operations Command Preservation of the Force and Family (USSOCOM POTFF) program by identifying and implementing innovative, high-value solutions across the Special Operations Forces (SOF) enterprise. This role applies advanced analytics and research methods to help improve the short- and long-term well-being of SOF service members and their families.
U.S. citizenship is required. Candidates must possess an active U.S. Government Secret security clearance or be eligible to obtain and maintain a Secret security clearance as required for contract performance. This position is pending upon contract award.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Perform hands-on data analysis and modeling with huge data sets.
- Apply data mining, NLP, and machine learning (both supervised and unsupervised) to improve relevance and personalization algorithms.
- Work side-by-side with product managers, software engineers, and designers in designing experiments and minimum viable products.
- Discover data sources, get access to them, import them, clean them up, and make them "model-ready."
- Create and refine features from the underlying data.
- Run regular A/B tests, gather data, perform statistical analysis, draw conclusions on the impact of your optimizations and communicate results to peers and leaders.
- Explore new design or technology shifts in order to determine how they might connect with the customer benefits we wish to deliver.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
-Conduct advanced data analytics, data manipulation, data mining, exploratory analysis, predictive analysis, and statistical analysis.
-Apply scientific techniques to translate and correlate data into graphical, written, visual, and verbal narratives that support informed decision-making.
-Enter, maintain, and analyze data within government systems.
-Develop and maintain dashboards that automate analysis and identify, interpret, and present trends in POTFF program data.
-Assist POTFF staff with survey design and create, analyze, and report survey results.
-Advise supported units and POTFF staff on opportunities and methods for capturing data related to POTFF programs and initiatives.
-Collaborate with POTFF program staff and the Government's POTFF biostatistician.
-Provide subject matter expertise in program evaluation, research methodologies, and data analysis.
-Use statistical modeling and data visualization techniques to identify trends, outliers, and patterns and produce reports and presentations that accurately communicate mission-relevant findings.
Minimum Requirements:
-Master's degree in quantitative science, social science, or a related discipline.
-Three or more years of research experience in an academic, social services, government, healthcare, or laboratory setting.
-Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, and Access.
-Advanced proficiency with commonly used statistical software and programming tools, such as SPSS, SAS, Python, and R Shiny.
-Demonstrated advanced research proficiency through relevant employment in academia or another environment where research is routinely conducted.
-Demonstrated record of scientific publications.
-Ability to read, write, and speak English fluently and clearly to communicate effectively with all personnel.
-Excellent verbal, written, interpersonal, and presentation skills, with strong attention to detail.
-Demonstrated initiative, interpersonal effectiveness, and cultural awareness when working constructively with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
Active Secret clearance and U.S. citizenship.
This position is pending upon contract award. It requires active secret clearance at minimum.
Minimum Requirements
- B.S. or B.A. in Computer Science, Information Systems, Business Analytics, Mathematics, Statistics, Engineering, or a related technical field required
- Advanced degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Business Analytics, Mathematics, Statistics, Engineering, Business Administration or a related field preferred.
- 5+ years using major machine learning/deep learning frameworks (e.g., Scikit-learn, PyTorch, TensorFlow and Keras) and algorithms (e.g., CNN, GAN, LSTM, RNN, XGBOOST).
- 5+ years of data engineering experience with modern big data analytics architectures (Hadoop, SQL, HIVE, Spark, Snowflake, etc.) on major cloud platforms (e.g., AWS, Azure, Google Cloud).
- 5+ years programming skill in Python, Scala, Julia.
- Working knowledge with modern cloud-based data storage and compute environments (e.g., AWS Sagemaker, Databricks in Azure, AI-platform in GCP, etc.).
- Experience deploying ML models into discovery/production environment to drive insights using MLOps a plus.
- Experience working in an agile delivery model a plus.
- Demonstrated leadership and self-direction. Willingness to both teach others and learn new techniques.
- Ability to communicate complex ideas in a clear, precise, and actionable manner.
- Excellent communication and presentation skills, with the ability to articulate new ideas and concepts to technical and non-technical partners.
- PowerBI experience a plus.
Preferred Skills:
-Doctoral degree in quantitative science, social science, or a related discipline.
-Certification or documented experience in human performance.
-Experience supporting Special Operations, athletics or sports programs, or other military environments.
-Strong technical and analytical capabilities in data visualization tools such as Power BI or Tableau; SQL querying and database management; business analytics and reporting; predictive modeling and forecasting; and dashboard development.

Maximus compensation is based on various factors including but not limited to job location, a candidate's education, training, experience, expected quality and quantity of work, required travel (if any), external market and internal value analysis including seniority and merit systems, as well as internal pay alignment. Annual salary is just one component of Maximus's total compensation package. Other rewards may include short- and long-term incentives as well as program-specific awards. Compensation ranges may differ based on contract value but will be commensurate with job duties and relevant work experience.
