Remote Sensor Operator information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote Sensor Operator, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Sensor Operator, you need strong attention to detail, spatial awareness, and a solid understanding of data analysis, often supported by military training or relevant technical certifications. Familiarity with sensor platforms, imagery analysis software, and secure communication systems is typically required. Excellent situational awareness, decision-making skills, and the ability to work under pressure are vital soft skills in this role. These competencies ensure accurate data collection and timely information relay, which are critical for mission effectiveness and safety.

What are some common challenges faced by Remote Sensor Operators, and how can they be effectively addressed?

Remote Sensor Operators often encounter challenges such as managing large volumes of data, interpreting sensor outputs accurately, and maintaining effective communication with field teams. Staying organized and using reliable data management tools can help handle data efficiently. Regular training on sensor technology and protocols ensures accuracy in data interpretation. Additionally, establishing clear communication channels with other team members, such as analysts and engineers, helps resolve issues quickly and ensures mission objectives are met.

What are Remote Sensor Operators?

Remote Sensor Operators are professionals who operate and monitor remote sensing equipment, such as cameras, radar, or other sensors, to collect data from a distance. They often work with airborne, satellite, or ground-based systems to gather information used in fields like defense, environmental monitoring, and resource management. Their responsibilities include controlling the sensors, processing and analyzing the data, and ensuring the accuracy of the information collected. This role requires technical skills, attention to detail, and the ability to interpret complex data. Remote Sensor Operators may work in a variety of industries, including military, agriculture, and scientific research.

What is the difference between Remote Sensor Operator vs Remote Drone Pilot?

AspectRemote Sensor OperatorRemote Drone Pilot
CredentialsFAA Part 107 certification, technical trainingFAA Part 107 certification, drone operation training
Work EnvironmentMonitoring sensors remotely, data analysisFlying drones remotely, aerial data collection
Industry UsageEnvironmental monitoring, security, infrastructureAerial photography, surveying, inspection

Both roles require FAA Part 107 certification and involve remote operation. The Remote Sensor Operator focuses on monitoring and analyzing sensor data, while the Remote Drone Pilot operates drones for aerial tasks. They share similar credentials and work environments but differ in their specific tasks and industry applications.

Job description

What's the role?

The Mapmaking team sits at the heart of HERE's mission to create the world's most accurate, up-to-date, and intelligent maps. We design and operate scalable pipelines for onboarding massive datasets from customers and partners, while developing and optimizing geospatial processing services that transform raw map inputs into high-quality, production-ready products. Our work spans innovation in AI, big data, and algorithmic evolution to advance how maps are processed, validated, and enriched, supporting both large-scale customer programs with premium automotive brands and multi-industry partners, as well as internal transformation initiatives. The Mapmaking team builds and operates core technologies and services for onboarding, processing, and quality assuring digital map data.

We are seeking a Senior Engineering Manager to lead multiple engineering teams focused on applying AI and machine learning to the automated creation and improvement of HD and SD maps. This role is responsible for developing processes, platforms, and algorithms that extract structured map data from diverse sensor sources including satellite imagery, street-level imagery, radar, vehicle perception data, and LiDAR. The leader will drive the development and application of foundational models and scalable data pipelines that improve map quality, expand coverage, and reduce manual production effort.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and grow multiple engineering teams responsible for AI/ML-driven map feature extraction and derivation automation.

  • Define and execute technical strategy for applying machine learning and foundational models to map generation from multimodal sensor data.

  • Drive the development of scalable pipelines that convert raw sensor inputs (imagery, LiDAR, radar, vehicle perception data) into structured map features.

  • Partner with data science, platform, and product teams to operationalize machine learning models in large-scale production systems.

  • Establish engineering practices that improve reliability, throughput, and quality of automated map generation systems.

  • Prioritize and deliver initiatives that increase automation, improve map accuracy, and accelerate global map coverage.

  • Provide technical leadership and mentorship for engineering managers and senior engineers.

  • Align cross-team efforts across data ingestion, model training, model deployment, and validation pipelines.

  • Use data-driven metrics to measure improvements in model performance, automation levels, and map quality.

Who are you?

Qualifications

  • 10+ years of software engineering experience, including significant experience leading engineering teams.

  • Proven experience managing multiple teams or large engineering organizations.

  • Strong background in machine learning, computer vision, or geospatial AI systems.

  • Experience building large-scale data processing pipelines for multimodal sensor data.

  • Familiarity with technologies related to perception systems, remote sensing, or geospatial data processing.

  • Experience deploying ML models into production environments and operating them at scale.

  • Strong leadership, communication, and cross-functional collaboration skills.

Preferred Experience

  • Experience working with geospatial data, HD mapping, or autonomous driving datasets.

  • Familiarity with LiDAR processing, satellite imagery analysis, and computer vision techniques.

  • Experience with large-scale distributed systems and cloud-based ML infrastructure.

  • Background in developing or applying foundation models for perception or geospatial understanding.

The expected base salary range for this position is $205,000 to $240,000 per year. Actual compensation will be based on factors such as skills and experience.

This position is also eligible for a target annual performance bonus, which is subject to company and individual performance.
