Remote Senior Scada Engineer information

What is a Remote Senior SCADA Engineer?

A Remote Senior SCADA Engineer is an experienced professional who designs, implements, and maintains Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems, often working from a remote location. SCADA systems are used to monitor and control industrial processes such as in energy, water, and manufacturing industries. As a senior engineer, they are responsible for overseeing complex projects, troubleshooting advanced issues, and ensuring system reliability and security. Remote work allows them to perform these tasks using secure network connections, collaborating with on-site teams and stakeholders virtually. Their expertise is critical for optimizing system performance and ensuring operational efficiency.

What are some common challenges faced by Remote Senior SCADA Engineers, and how can they be managed effectively?

Remote Senior SCADA Engineers often encounter challenges such as maintaining secure remote access, troubleshooting complex system issues without being onsite, and ensuring reliable communication between distributed assets. Effective management involves leveraging advanced remote monitoring tools, establishing robust cybersecurity protocols, and fostering strong communication with onsite teams. Building proactive maintenance routines and participating in regular virtual team meetings can also help address potential problems before they escalate.

What is the difference between Remote Senior Scada Engineer vs Remote SCADA Technician?

AspectRemote Senior Scada EngineerRemote SCADA Technician
CredentialsBachelor's in Engineering, certifications like ICS or SCADA-specific trainingTechnical diploma or associate degree, some certifications beneficial
Work EnvironmentDesign, development, and system architecture in engineering teamsInstallation, troubleshooting, and maintenance in operational settings
Industry UsageUsed in engineering, system design, and project managementCommon in field service, system support, and maintenance roles

The Remote Senior Scada Engineer focuses on designing and developing SCADA systems, requiring advanced engineering skills and certifications. In contrast, the Remote SCADA Technician handles installation, troubleshooting, and maintenance tasks, often with less formal education. Both roles are essential in the SCADA industry but serve different functions within the system lifecycle.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote Senior SCADA Engineer, and why are they important?

A Remote Senior SCADA Engineer needs in-depth knowledge of SCADA systems, industrial automation, and control engineering, typically backed by a degree in electrical or computer engineering and several years of relevant experience. Expertise with SCADA software (such as Wonderware, GE iFIX, or Siemens WinCC), PLC programming, network protocols, and cybersecurity certifications are highly valued. Strong problem-solving, self-motivation, and effective remote communication skills set outstanding candidates apart. These abilities ensure secure, reliable, and efficient monitoring and control of critical infrastructure, even when working remotely.

Job description

Senior Embedded Engineer - Smart energy systems - Remote!

Senior Embedded Firmware Engineer (100% Hands-On IoT)

Location: 100% Fully Remote (EST Timezone Preferred)

Compensation: $145,000 - $190,000 Base Salary + Full Benefits

Role Type: Permanent, Full-Time Individual Contributor (IC)

About the Opportunity

We are a rapidly growing, private equity-backed technology leader building intelligent networks of connected commercial infrastructure. Our IoT platform harnesses real-time edge telemetry and automated automation systems to optimize operations and deliver resource efficiency for enterprises and utilities nationwide.

We are looking for a hands-on Senior Embedded Firmware Engineer to join our newly restructured engineering team. This is a 100% technical individual contributor role with zero people management. You will focus entirely on designing, implementing, and deploying low-level C/C++ code that interfaces directly with physical silicon and microcontrollers on custom circuit boards.

If you thrive on bare-metal architecture, device-to-cloud telemetry, and debugging physical hardware, this role offers complete technical ownership in a stable, fully remote environment.

What You Will Do

  • Firmware Development: Write highly efficient, real-time code in C/C++ for resource-constrained, microcontroller-based IoT hardware nodes.

  • Driver Architecture: Design and maintain low-level device drivers for onboard sensors, actuators, and various wired/wireless communication modules.

  • System Integration: Develop secure telemetry pipelines and robust Over-the-Air (OTA) firmware update streams to push cloud-managed upgrades using protocols like MQTT and HTTP/HTTPS.

  • Hardware Debugging: Troubleshoot physical board-level issues and analyze system architecture using JTAG/SWD, oscilloscopes, and logic analyzers.

Absolute Requirements (Must-Haves)

To be successful, candidates must have a foundational understanding of physical hardware and electronic systems. Profiles focused purely on application-level or desktop software development cannot be considered.

  • Education: Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or a related technical field.

  • Core Experience: 5+ years of embedded firmware development paired with 3+ years of hands-on IoT systems engineering.

  • Languages: High proficiency in C/C++ for embedded targets, and Python for custom internal scripting and tooling.

  • Microcontrollers: Production experience working directly with ARM Cortex-M, STM32, Microchip, or similar hardware platforms.

  • Hardware Protocols: Hands-on experience with physical serial communication layers: SPI, I2C, UART, RS-485, USB, and Ethernet.

  • Operating Systems: Direct development experience utilizing an RTOS (FreeRTOS, Zephyr, or similar) AND building embedded Linux systems via Buildroot.

  • Diagnostic Tools: Deep comfort using physical laboratory equipment to isolate firmware defects (JTAG, SWD, oscilloscopes, and logic analyzers).

Preferred Skills

  • Exposure to industrial automation, building automation networks, or energy management systems.

  • Familiarity with wireless communications (Wi-Fi, Bluetooth/BLE, LoRa/LoRaWAN, or cellular integration).

  • Networking protocols like Modbus, CoAP, and TCP/IP stacks.

  • Experience with embedded GUI development utilizing tools like LVGL or TouchGFX.

We are setting up interviews now! For quicker review and prospective submittal, please apply and complete the self assessment few questions. You are also welcome to email me your resume to Lynne@cybercoders.com

Benefits

  • Mission-Driven: A rewarding career directly combating climate change.

  • Growth Industry: Stable, well-funded company in the booming green-tech and utility tech sectors.

  • Comprehensive Benefits: Competitive pay, full health/wellness coverage, and 401(k).
