Remote Senior Civil Designer information

What is a remote senior civil designer?

Remote Senior Civil Designers are experienced professionals who plan, design, and oversee civil engineering projects such as roads, bridges, and infrastructure, while working remotely from a location outside the main office. They use advanced design software, collaborate with engineering teams, and ensure that projects meet regulatory standards and client requirements. Their seniority means they often lead teams, mentor junior designers, and provide technical expertise throughout the project lifecycle.

How does a remote senior civil designer typically collaborate with project teams and stakeholders across different locations?

As a Remote Senior Civil Designer, you will frequently collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, including engineers, architects, and project managers, often spread across various geographic locations. This collaboration is typically facilitated through digital tools such as BIM software, cloud-based document sharing, and regular virtual meetings. Clear communication and proactive coordination are essential to ensure alignment on project requirements, design standards, and timelines. You may also be responsible for mentoring junior designers remotely and providing technical guidance throughout the design process.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote senior civil designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Senior Civil Designer, you need advanced knowledge of civil engineering principles, strong drafting skills, and typically a degree in civil engineering or a related field. Proficiency with design software such as AutoCAD Civil 3D, MicroStation, and familiarity with project management tools are essential, along with relevant certifications like EIT or PE being advantageous. Strong communication, problem-solving abilities, and self-motivation are crucial soft skills for collaborating remotely and delivering high-quality designs. These skills and qualities ensure accurate project execution, effective teamwork, and successful completion of complex civil design projects in a remote setting.

Our employee-owners are unified by a singular commitment to supporting projects that address key societal issues, such as the transition to renewable energy, infrastructure hardening and repair, environmental protection, and community resilience.

Learn more about our award-winning culture, the benefits and perks of being a Dudekian, and the projects you will have the opportunity to shape.

Who You Are

As an employee-owner, you embrace accountability, working safely, and collaboration while thinking resourcefully and independently.

Like all Dudekians, you are curious and solution-oriented, with the ability to adapt quickly to changes and approach challenges with a spirit of innovation.

How Youโ€™ll Make an Impact

Dudek is seeking an experienced Senior Civil Engineer to support complex civil engineering projects within the energy and infrastructure sectors. This role focuses on delivering technically sound, constructible site civil designs for utility-scale solar, electrical substations, battery energy storage systems (BESS), and related infrastructure projects.

As an employee-owner, you will lead the development of complete site civil design packages from early planning through construction support. The ideal candidate brings deep technical expertise in grading, drainage, hydrology, and stormwater compliance, along with the ability to coordinate multidisciplinary teams and mentor junior staff while ensuring high-quality project delivery.

This position is well suited for an engineer with 12+ years of experience who thrives in a fast-paced consulting environment and enjoys solving complex site and infrastructure challenges that support critical energy development.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Lead civil engineering design and technical delivery for utility-scale energy and infrastructure projects, including solar facilities, electrical substations, and battery energy storage systems.
  • Develop and oversee complete site civil design packages, including:
  • Perform stormwater modeling and hydrologic analysis to support permitting and regulatory compliance.
  • Serve as technical lead responsible for design quality, constructability, and adherence to applicable codes, standards, and client requirements.
  • Coordinate closely with multidisciplinary teams including electrical, structural, environmental, and permitting specialists to advance project design and approvals.
  • Provide technical direction, markups, and mentorship to engineers, designers, and technicians during plan development.
  • Support project execution by collaborating with project managers to maintain alignment with scope, schedule, and budget objectives.
  • Prepare and review technical reports, calculations, and construction documents for client and agency submittals.
  • Interface with clients and regulatory agencies during design development and permitting processes.
  • Conduct QA/QC reviews to ensure accuracy, consistency, and compliance across deliverables.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement of workflows, standards, and civil engineering best practices.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelorโ€™s degree in Civil Engineering or related field.
  • 12+ years of progressive civil engineering experience, including experience supporting energy or power infrastructure projects (e.g., utility-scale solar, substations, or battery energy storage systems).
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license with the ability to obtain additional state licensure through reciprocity as needed.
  • Strong experience preparing full site civil design packages for complex projects.
  • Advanced proficiency with AutoCAD Civil 3D.
  • Demonstrated expertise in grading design, drainage systems, and stormwater management.
  • Experience performing hydrology and stormwater modeling.
  • Strong understanding of permitting and regulatory compliance requirements.
  • Must possess a valid driverโ€™s license and have active personal automobile liability insurance by the first day of employment

Preferred Qualifications

  • Demonstrated experience serving as lead civil engineer or technical lead on utility-scale renewable energy or power infrastructure projects, including responsibility for full site civil design packages and coordination across disciplines.
  • Proficiency with stormwater and hydrologic modeling tools (e.g., Storm Sewer, Hydrograph, or similar platforms).
  • Experience preparing SWPPPs, erosion control plans, and stormwater reports.
  • Demonstrated experience providing technical leadership or mentoring junior staff.
  • Strong technical writing and client communication skills.
  • Experience working in multidisciplinary consulting environments.

Compensation: $120,000-$165,000 annually*

*Final agreed-upon compensation will be based on a variety of factors including, but not limited to, an individualโ€™s related experience, education, certifications, skills, and work location.
