What is a remote Selenium automation engineer?

A Remote Selenium Automation Engineer is a professional who specializes in using the Selenium tool to automate web application testing, working from a remote location rather than on-site. Their primary responsibilities include designing, developing, and maintaining automated test scripts to ensure software quality and functionality. They collaborate with development and QA teams, often using programming languages like Python, Java, or C#, and may also be involved in setting up test frameworks and integrating with CI/CD pipelines. Working remotely allows them to contribute to projects from anywhere, providing flexibility for both the engineer and the employer.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote Selenium automation engineer?

To thrive as a Remote Selenium Automation Engineer, you need a solid understanding of software testing principles, programming languages like Java or Python, and experience with Selenium WebDriver, usually supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with test automation frameworks, version control systems like Git, and CI/CD tools such as Jenkins or GitHub Actions is typically required. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication skills set top candidates apart in remote and collaborative environments. These skills ensure reliable automated test coverage, efficient defect detection, and seamless teamwork across distributed teams.

How does a remote Selenium automation engineer typically collaborate with development and QA teams?

As a Remote Selenium Automation Engineer, you'll regularly coordinate with both development and QA teams through virtual meetings, project management tools, and shared repositories. Effective communication is key, as you’ll need to clarify test requirements, review automation scripts, and report defects. You may also participate in sprint planning or code reviews to ensure your automation aligns with ongoing development. Collaboration tools like Jira, Slack, and GitHub are commonly used to maintain transparency and streamline workflows despite the distributed nature of the team.

Job description

Position Overview
**** Prior exp with Center of Medicaid and Medicare Preferred.
We are seeking a Senior Test Automation Engineer to own and evolve our test automation platform beyond test authoring. The ideal candidate will drive automation framework architecture, reliability, security, CI/CD integration, and cross-team enablement, helping ensure quality and automation remain on the critical path for software releases.
The role requires strong hands-on experience with Selenium, Cucumber, Java, Maven, GitHub, CI/CD, AWS, OpenShift, TestRail, and Jira, along with the ability to design scalable automation solutions and improve the overall software testing lifecycle.
Key Responsibilities
  • Own, maintain, and continuously evolve the enterprise test automation framework, including architecture, scalability, reliability, security, and maintainability.
  • Develop and maintain automated UI and functional tests using Selenium WebDriver, Java, Cucumber, and BDD frameworks.
  • Create reusable automation components, utilities, page objects, test libraries, and framework capabilities to reduce test duplication and improve execution efficiency.
  • Drive automation strategy across teams and ensure automated testing is integrated into the software development and release lifecycle.
  • Integrate automated test suites with GitHub repositories and CI/CD pipelines, including OpenShift-based deployment and execution environments.
  • Implement secure test automation practices, including centralized credential and secret management using AWS Secrets Manager.
  • Eliminate plaintext credentials and ensure secure runtime retrieval, error handling, auditing, and rotation of automation secrets.
  • Strengthen software dependency and supply-chain security by managing Maven dependencies through enterprise repositories such as Nexus.
  • Standardize Maven configurations and build settings across developer workstations and CI/CD environments to improve build consistency and repeatability.
  • Design automation frameworks capable of supporting multiple product configurations, environments, and plan-year implementations while minimizing code duplication and branching complexity.
  • Develop and maintain Cucumber feature files, step definitions, hooks, runners, and reusable BDD components.
  • Implement robust test execution strategies for nightly regression, smoke, integration, and release validation testing.
  • Design and maintain integrations between automation frameworks and TestRail for automated test case management and results publishing.
  • Support bidirectional synchronization between automation, TestRail, and other test management systems where required.
  • Integrate automated testing and reporting with Jira requirements and defect workflows to improve requirements-to-test traceability.
  • Automate test execution reporting, metrics, dashboards, and audit-ready quality artifacts.
  • Reduce manual reporting and test-management activities through automation and scheduled reporting solutions.
  • Analyze automation failures, identify root causes, and improve framework reliability and test stability.
  • Collaborate with developers, QA engineers, DevOps engineers, product owners, and other technical teams to resolve quality and release risks.
  • Establish automation best practices, coding standards, design patterns, and documentation across QA teams.
  • Mentor other automation engineers and provide technical guidance on framework development and automation strategy.
  • Continuously identify opportunities to increase automation coverage, reduce regression execution time, and improve release confidence.

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent experience.
  • 7+ years of software testing and test automation experience.
  • Strong hands-on experience developing automation frameworks using Selenium WebDriver.
  • Strong programming experience with Java.
  • Extensive experience with Cucumber / BDD and Gherkin.
  • Experience with JUnit and/or TestNG.
  • Strong experience with Maven and dependency management.
  • Experience integrating automated testing into CI/CD pipelines.
  • Hands-on experience with Git/GitHub.
  • Experience working with OpenShift, Kubernetes, or containerized CI/CD environments.
  • Experience with AWS, particularly AWS Secrets Manager or similar cloud-based secret-management solutions.
  • Experience with enterprise artifact repositories such as Nexus Repository or Artifactory.
  • Experience with TestRail, Jira, or similar test management and issue-tracking platforms.
  • Strong understanding of software testing methodologies, regression testing, test strategy, and automation architecture.
  • Experience troubleshooting failed automation executions and improving test stability and reliability.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience designing or owning an enterprise-scale automation framework.
  • Experience with REST/API automation and tools such as REST Assured.
  • Experience with Docker and Kubernetes/OpenShift.
  • Experience with AWS services beyond Secrets Manager.
  • Experience implementing automated test reporting and dashboards.
  • Experience with Jenkins, GitHub Actions, GitLab CI, or similar CI/CD platforms.
  • Understanding of application security and software supply-chain security.
  • Experience with Agile/Scrum development environments.
