Remote Security Risk Assessment information

What is a remote security risk assessment?

A Remote Security Risk Assessment is a process where security professionals evaluate an organization's security risks, vulnerabilities, and threats without being physically present on-site. This assessment is typically conducted through virtual meetings, digital questionnaires, and remote access to systems and documentation. The goal is to identify potential security gaps and recommend improvements to protect sensitive data and systems from cyber threats. Remote assessments have become increasingly popular due to their flexibility, cost-effectiveness, and ability to serve organizations regardless of location.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote security risk assessor?

To thrive as a Remote Security Risk Assessor, you need expertise in cybersecurity principles, risk analysis, and a relevant degree or certifications such as CISSP, CISM, or CRISC. Familiarity with tools like vulnerability scanners, security information and event management (SIEM) systems, and risk assessment frameworks (e.g., NIST, ISO 27001) is essential. Strong analytical thinking, communication skills, and attention to detail help in accurately identifying and communicating risks to stakeholders. These skills and qualities are vital to ensure organizations can proactively mitigate threats and maintain robust security postures in remote or distributed environments.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals in remote security risk assessment roles?

Professionals in remote security risk assessment often encounter challenges such as limited on-site visibility, reliance on digital communication, and the need to assess complex IT environments from afar. Effective collaboration with on-site staff and stakeholders is essential to gather accurate information and implement recommendations. Additionally, staying up-to-date with evolving cybersecurity threats and maintaining clear documentation are vital for success in this role.

Remote Security Risk Assessments and Cybersecurity Analysts both require security certifications and often work in similar environments. However, risk assessors focus on evaluating vulnerabilities and compliance, while analysts handle ongoing security monitoring and incident response. Understanding these differences helps organizations assign the right roles for their security needs.

How Youโ€™ll Make an Impact

The Vice President of Cybersecurity serves as the senior cybersecurity leader for the credit union and reports directly to the COO. This role leads the enterprise cybersecurity program as a standalone risk function, with responsibility for strategy, governance, cyber risk oversight, regulatory engagement, and executive-level reporting, while remaining separate from daily technology delivery.

What Youโ€™ll Be Doingย

  • Develop and lead the enterprise cybersecurity strategy, roadmap, policies, and governance structure in alignment with the credit unionโ€™s risk appetite and business objectives.
  • Oversee information security risk management, including risk assessments, control maturity, issue remediation tracking, and alignment to regulatory expectations.
  • Establish and oversee an enterprise cybersecurity assessment and assurance program, including periodic internal security assessments, independent third-party assessments, penetration testing, vulnerability assessments, and security maturity reviews. Findings should be prioritized, tracked through remediation, and regularly reported to executive leadership.
  • Lead security-related regulatory, audit, and board reporting, including updates on cybersecurity posture, incidents, third-party exposure, and emerging threats.
  • Establish and oversee the credit unionโ€™s third-party cybersecurity risk program, including due diligence standards, control reviews, contract security provisions, and ongoing monitoring.
  • Provide executive oversight for IAM, cloud, and security architecture standards.
  • Own cybersecurity incident response leadership at the executive level, including escalation management, tabletop exercises, post-incident reporting, and lessons learned.
  • Lead Business Continuity, Disaster Recovery, and Cyber Resilience planning.
  • Lead AI and data governance efforts related to cybersecurity, including secure use of AI tools, model oversight coordination, data protection controls, and governance expectations.
  • Partner with Digital Delivery, Infrastructure, Risk, Compliance, Internal Audit, Legal, and business leaders while maintaining independent cybersecurity oversight.
  • Supervise the Security Operations Manager and ensure effective day-to-day execution of operational security activities.

What You Bring to the Teamย

  • Bachelorโ€™s degree in cybersecurity, information systems, computer science, business, or a related field; advanced degree preferred.
  • CISSP and CSM Certifications Required; GIAC-GSEC preferred
  • 10 or more years of progressive cybersecurity experience, including senior leadership responsibility in financial services or another regulated industry.
  • Demonstrated experience with security strategy, governance, incident response, identity, cloud security, third-party risk, and board/regulatory reporting.
  • Strong working knowledge of financial services control expectations and frameworks such as FFIEC, GLBA, NIST, and related regulatory guidance.
  • Proven ability to communicate technical risk in clear business terms to executive leadership and boards.

Success Profile

  • Executive presence and board-ready communication style.
  • Business-oriented leadership mindset with strong risk judgment.
  • Ability to balance strategic oversight with practical execution.
  • Strong collaboration skills with enough independence to provide credible challenge.

Tools & Work Environmentย

  • Stable internet connection with speeds high enough for video conferencing and screen sharingย
  • Smartphone with current iOS/Android OSย ย
  • Prolonged periods sitting at a workstation and working on a computerย
  • Ability to communicate with coworkers and customers via email, chat, teleconference, and/or phoneย
