What is a remote security engineer?

A Remote Security Engineer is an IT professional who specializes in protecting computer systems, networks, and data from cyber threats, while working from a location outside of the traditional office environment. They design, implement, and manage security measures such as firewalls, intrusion detection systems, and encryption protocols. Remote Security Engineers often collaborate with teams virtually to monitor systems, respond to incidents, and ensure compliance with security policies. This role requires strong technical skills, problem-solving abilities, and familiarity with current cybersecurity threats and best practices.

What does a remote security engineer do?

As a remote security engineer, your job duties focus on assessing and ensuring the security infrastructure of a company or organization’s computer network, software, and devices. Your responsibilities vary depending on the needs of your employer or client. You may monitor networks and systems for evidence of a security breach, ensure encryption of sensitive information and communications, respond to potential security breaks, and help implement cybersecurity measures. You typically ensure that your client’s software, systems, and devices have the latest security updates.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote security engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Security Engineer, you need expertise in network security, incident response, and vulnerability assessment, usually backed by a degree in computer science or a related field and relevant certifications like CISSP or CEH. Familiarity with security tools such as firewalls, SIEM platforms, intrusion detection/prevention systems, and cloud security solutions is crucial. Strong analytical thinking, clear communication, and self-motivation are vital soft skills for collaborating remotely and responding quickly to threats. These skills and qualities ensure robust protection of digital assets and effective coordination within distributed teams, which is critical for maintaining organizational security in remote work environments.

How do remote security engineers typically collaborate with cross-functional teams given the distributed nature of their work?

Remote Security Engineers often use a combination of video conferencing, collaborative documentation tools, and secure communication platforms to work closely with IT, development, and operations teams. Regular virtual meetings, code reviews, and incident response simulations are common to ensure everyone stays aligned on security protocols and project goals. Effective asynchronous communication and clear documentation are essential to overcome time zone differences and maintain strong security postures across remote teams.

Job description

At 1440 Foods, we're on a mission to energize people to unleash their full potential with a portfolio of great-tasting, high-protein snacks and supplements. Our brands Pure Protein, Body Fortress, MET-Rx, and FITCrunch make better nutrition accessible, enjoyable, and part of an active lifestyle.

As a fast-growing sports and active nutrition company, we are shaping the future of health and wellness in CPG. If you're looking to make a big impact in a high-growth, entrepreneurial environment, we'd love to have you on board!

Position Overview

As our IT/OT Security Engineer & Incident Response Lead, you'll be a hands-on security engineer who also leads incidents during business hours across our corporate, cloud, and OT/manufacturing environments. You'll own security engineering and incident coordination, while our managed 247 SOC handles monitoring and first response. You'll work closely with IT Infrastructure, OT Engineering, OEM vendors, and leadership, and report to the Director of IT.

If you're looking to bring engineering depth and incident leadership to a fast-growing manufacturing environment, we'd love to speak with you.

Job Responsibilities

  • Incident Response (primary): Serve as the business-hours incident lead and Incident Commander during cyber events. Validate and authorize SOC-recommended containment, coordinate IT, OT Engineering, OEMs, and leadership through resolution, and run post-incident reviews.
  • Endpoint & Vulnerability: Administer EDR (CrowdStrike Falcon), investigate and tune detections, and drive risk-based vulnerability remediation with Infrastructure and OT, tracking SLAs.
  • OT Security (key focus): Own secure remote vendor/OEM access and jump-box environments, maintain OT segmentation and firewall rules, coordinate remediation around production schedules, and support secure architecture for PLC/HMI/SCADA and engineering workstations (ISA/IEC 62443).
  • Cloud, Identity & Network: Support Microsoft 365 / Entra ID security, Conditional Access, privileged access reviews, and MFA; review firewall rules, VPN, and network segmentation.
  • Governance (support): Support policy, security audits, NIST CSF, cyber insurance questionnaires, and security documentation.
  • Projects: Contribute to infrastructure projects, security architecture reviews, and vendor design reviews.

Qualifications & Skills

  • OT/industrial security fundamentals - secure remote access, segmentation, PLC/HMI/SCADA, ISA/IEC 62443
  • Incident response - able to lead technically during an event
  • Hands-on endpoint (EDR) and vulnerability management on comparable tools
  • Cloud/identity security basics (Microsoft 365 / Entra ID)
  • Strong communicator across technical, plant, and executive audiences
  • Manufacturing or food-production environment experience preferred

Why Join Us?

  • Opportunity to grow within a critical function in a growing mid-size CPG company
  • Collaborative and entrepreneurial work culture
  • Competitive compensation and benefits package
  • Career development and growth opportunities

If you are a hands-on security engineer with deep OT expertise and a passion for incident leadership in a fast-growing manufacturing environment, we invite you to apply and join our team!
