Job description

About the Role
AM&D (Autonomous Mobility & Delivery) team is building the systems that will allow Uber to deliver safe and scalable autonomous mobility across the globe. Remote Assistance (RA) is a core capability that enables humans to interpret and support AV behavior in real time and is essential to building trust across the rider journey.
As a Staff Engineer, you will serve as a senior technical leader who helps define and evolve the long term architecture of Uber's RA platform. You will work alongside the existing RA lead and take ownership of major technical domains so the organization can expand RA capabilities across multiple autonomy partners, countries, and operational models. The role requires a blend of deep technical expertise, strong product instincts, and the ability to communicate clearly at all levels of the company.
What You Will Do
- You will help define and evolve foundational RA architectures including platforms for real time data ingestion, autonomy state representation, operator workflow support, partner integration, and long term scalability.
- You will work closely with engineering teams across AM&D, maps, infrastructure, mobility experience, and other partner groups to align RA capabilities with broader autonomy and rider experience priorities.
- You will collaborate directly with external autonomy companies to develop integration approaches, negotiate technical interfaces, and guide joint solutions that improve the safety and clarity of autonomous operations.
- You will help driving major architectural initiatives that prepare RA for increasing complexity, wider partner support, and global scale.
- You will mentor engineers across the organization and elevate engineering quality through strong design and architectural guidance.
- You will contribute to internal and external strategic communication including preparing technical updates for Uber executives, documenting architectural decisions, and representing RA in cross company technical forums.
- You will help defining instrumentation, establish KPIs, and use operational and user insights to guide continuous improvement in reliability, latency, decision quality, and operator clarity.
Basic Qualifications
- A bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field or equivalent practical experience.
- Seven or more years of software engineering experience including substantial experience building large scale backend systems.
- Proven ability to set technical direction across teams and deliver high quality distributed systems in production environments.
Preferred Qualifications
- Significant experience designing or scaling real time systems involving telemetry pipelines, operator facing workflows, autonomy visualization, robotics platforms, or high fidelity decision support systems.
- Candidates with advanced academic training such as a Master's degree or PhD or candidates who possess significant hands on industry experience in autonomy operations, robotics infrastructure, remote assistance technologies, or real time platforms are strongly encouraged to apply. Academic depth and industry depth are equally valued for meeting the specialization expectations of this role.
- Strong product sense and analytical rigor with the ability to define technical and experiential KPIs, incorporate user and operator feedback, and drive measurable iteration.
- Expertise in architectures that support low latency data flows, multi modal sensor information, complex state modeling, and highly reliable service boundaries.
- Experience guiding engineering excellence across organizations including standards for testing, observability, incident response, and long horizon architectural planning.
- Demonstrated ability to lead through influence in multi team environments, coordinate across partner engineering organizations, and collaborate with external autonomy companies.
- Ability to prepare and deliver strategic communication for internal stakeholders including updates for senior leadership and executives as well as communication for external partners.
