Remote Ruby Rails Developer Contract information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote Ruby on Rails Developer (Contract), and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Ruby on Rails Developer (Contract), you need strong proficiency in Ruby, Rails framework, RESTful APIs, and a proven track record in software development, typically evidenced by a degree in computer science or equivalent experience. Familiarity with tools such as Git, PostgreSQL, Docker, and cloud platforms like AWS or Heroku is commonly required, along with knowledge of automated testing frameworks. Excellent communication, self-motivation, and time management skills are vital for collaborating and delivering results in a remote setting. These skills ensure the developer can independently produce high-quality, maintainable code while efficiently collaborating with distributed teams.

What is a Remote Ruby Rails Developer Contract?

A Remote Ruby Rails Developer Contract is a temporary or project-based job where a software developer works remotely to build or maintain web applications using the Ruby on Rails framework. These developers are typically responsible for writing clean, maintainable code, collaborating with remote teams, and implementing features based on client requirements. The contract nature means the position is not permanent and usually lasts for a set duration or until specific project milestones are completed. Working remotely allows developers to perform their tasks from any location, often with flexible hours. This setup is popular for tech companies seeking specialized talent without committing to long-term employment.

What are some common challenges faced by remote Ruby on Rails developers working on contract, and how can they be addressed?

Remote Ruby on Rails developers working on contract often face challenges such as managing communication across different time zones, staying aligned with project goals, and ensuring code consistency with distributed teams. To overcome these, it's important to establish clear communication channels, participate actively in daily standups or sprint meetings, and adhere to shared coding standards and documentation practices. Utilizing collaboration tools like Slack, GitHub, and project management platforms helps maintain transparency and streamline workflows, making it easier to deliver high-quality code on time.

Job description

Come build the rails of B2B commerce in hospitality, starting with hotels and fintech integrations
What excites you
  • You thrive at the intersection of engineering and customer + product success, translating ambiguous business needs into elegant technical solutions that drive real value.
  • You're energized by working directly with customers to understand their challenges and architect solutions that transform how they operate.
  • You love owning the full customer journey - from initial discovery through production deployment and continuous iteration.
  • You're someone who has worked on early-stage teams, perhaps even as a founder, and excel at wearing multiple hats while maintaining focus on impact.
  • You're an expert at navigating ambiguity and making smart tradeoffs between customer needs, technical constraints, and business objectives.
  • You find satisfaction in building solutions that may not always be glamorous but deliver tangible, measurable value to the businesses that depend on them.

What excites us
  • You have 5+ years of hands-on experience shipping production systems, with a track record of driving customer outcomes from concept to deployment.
  • You're comfortable owning the customer journey from initial pre-sales discovery through production implementation and ongoing optimization.
  • You bring strong technical problem-solving skills, especially in fast-changing, ambiguous environments where requirements evolve.
  • You're a full-stack generalist equally adept with client-side and server-side technologies (Ruby on Rails / Hotwire / Typescript / React / Node.js / Postgres).
  • You have experience with system integrations, APIs, and building reliable data pipelines between enterprise systems.
  • You excel at technical communication - translating complex technical concepts for non-technical stakeholders and gathering clear requirements from vague business objectives.
  • You have experience building software for industries with complex operational workflows, ideally in hospitality, payments, or marketplace environments.
  • You understand that this is an engineering role with hands-on coding that also encompasses aspects of product management, technical customer success, and solution architecture.

What you'll do
  • Drive end-to-end implementations and solutions: Partner directly with our hotel partners and suppliers to architect, build, and deploy integrations with their existing ERP systems, property management systems, and operational tools.
  • Own the customer technical journey: Lead technical discovery sessions, design custom solutions, and ensure successful production deployments that meet specific business requirements. You'll understand user pain points, scope product specs, and design and build software.
  • Build scalable integration frameworks: Create reusable patterns and self-serve tools that accelerate future implementations while maintaining flexibility for customer-specific needs.
  • Enable rapid onboarding: Contribute to our hotel onboarding initiative by identifying patterns across implementations and building features that reduce time-to-value for new partners.
  • Shape the product roadmap: Surface unmet needs from your direct customer work, prototype solutions, and collaborate with product and engineering to build features that benefit all customers.
  • Develop strategic partnerships with our sales and go-to-market-teams: Work closely with key technology partners to ensure deep, reliable integrations that can become distribution channels for Folio.
Working at Folio
  • Folio is a Ruby on Rails app with Typescript Node.js automations deployed to AWS.
  • Our engineering team meets daily for standup (except Friday) and otherwise keep meetings to a minimum.
  • We're a remote-first company. Quarterly, we travel to work together in-person and stay with one of our hotel partners.
  • For the most part, we rely on Google Meet, GitHub, Linear, Notion, and Slack to make decisions and get things done day-to-day.

What we value
  • Craft. We take pride in our work, find joy in execution, and believe that the best companies are built at a steady yet resilient pace.
  • Optimism. We believe in ourselves and each other and know anything is possible with the right amount of hustle and grit.
  • Ownership. We love making things better and have a strong sense of shared responsibility over everything we create together.
  • Hospitality. The industry we're building for has a culture of service to others, and we bring that energy to how we work together each day.
