Their responsibilities often include developing, maintaining, and enhancing business applications, troubleshooting issues, and collaborating with teams via digital communication tools. Working remotely allows these professionals to serve clients or employers worldwide, providing flexibility while leveraging their expertise in legacy and modern RPG codebases.

What does a remote RPG programmer do?

A remote RPG programmer works in software development, creating new applications or tools using the report program generator language, which was originally designed for the IBM minicomputer system on the AS/400 and i-Series of computers. RPG is one of the most frequently used programming languages, and significant amounts of business enterprise, infrastructure operations, and other essential system controls use it. Job description

Job Title: Senior AI Engineer
Location: Remote (U.S.)
Employment Type: Contract (W2 through ZipStaff)

About the Opportunity:
ZipStaff is seeking a Senior AI Engineer (also called an AI Orchestrator) to join a small AI-native engineering team at a leading healthcare analytics organization.

This role is not focused on training AI models or building machine-learning pipelines. You will be a strong software engineer who uses AI tools as a first-class part of the daily engineering workflow to accelerate development, improve testing, and shorten feedback loops — while shipping production-grade software safely and at high quality.

What You'll Do:
  • Build and enhance production-grade software applications using AI-assisted development workflows.
  • Translate product and technical requirements into working, maintainable software.
  • Use AI tools to accelerate coding, debugging, testing, refactoring, and documentation.
  • Review, validate, and refine AI-generated code for correctness, performance, security, and maintainability.
  • Design and implement clean, well-structured APIs, services, and application components.
  • Contribute to scalable backend systems and full-stack solutions as required.
  • Orchestrate AI tools across code generation, refactoring, test creation, debugging, and documentation.
  • Follow and help refine AI-native engineering standards established by the Tech Lead.
  • Collaborate with AI-Native Tech Architects to implement architectural and engineering best practices.
  • Deliver features end-to-end within a small AI-native team.
  • Coordinate with adjacent teams on integration, dependencies, and shared services.
  • Communicate technical issues and tradeoffs clearly to engineering and product stakeholders.

Required Qualifications:
  • 8-10+ years of professional software engineering experience shipping production applications.
  • Proven ability to design and implement APIs, services, and maintainable application components.
  • Hands-on experience using AI coding tools as part of a daily engineering workflow (code generation, debugging, testing, refactoring, documentation).
  • Strong engineering judgment to review and refine AI-generated code for quality, security, and maintainability.
  • Experience contributing to backend and/or full-stack solutions.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a small, fast-iteration team.
  • Strong communication skills with engineering and product stakeholders.
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without sponsorship now or in the future.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience helping define or improve AI-assisted engineering standards and workflows.
  • Healthcare, analytics, or regulated-industry software delivery experience.
  • Familiarity with modern CI/CD, automated testing, and secure coding practices.

About ZipStaff:
ZipStaff partners with leading organizations to connect skilled technology professionals with high-impact contract opportunities. We focus on quality matches and long-term success.

To apply, please submit your resume highlighting your production software engineering experience and how you use AI tools in day-to-day development. Do not apply if your background is primarily model training or ML pipeline work.
