Remote Roaming Engineer information

What are some common challenges faced by Remote Roaming Engineers and how can they be addressed?

Remote Roaming Engineers often encounter challenges related to diagnosing network issues across multiple carriers and regions without being physically present on-site. Effective communication with local teams and leveraging remote diagnostic tools are key to overcoming these hurdles. Staying up-to-date with the latest roaming protocols and maintaining a flexible schedule to accommodate different time zones also help in resolving issues efficiently. Collaboration with cross-functional teams, such as network operations and customer support, is essential for timely problem resolution and service optimization.

What is the difference between Remote Roaming Engineer vs Network Engineer?

AspectRemote Roaming EngineerNetwork Engineer
CredentialsBachelor's in Telecommunications, Networking, or related field; certifications like CCNA, CCNPBachelor's in Computer Science, Networking, or related; certifications like CCNA, CompTIA Network+
Work EnvironmentRemote, often collaborating with telecom providers and field teamsOn-site or hybrid, managing network infrastructure and configurations
Industry UsageTelecommunications, mobile networks, roaming servicesIT, enterprise networks, service providers

While both roles require networking knowledge and certifications like CCNA, Remote Roaming Engineers focus on mobile roaming and telecom-specific issues remotely, whereas Network Engineers typically manage broader network infrastructure on-site or hybrid. The roles overlap in credentials and industry but differ in work environment and specific focus areas.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote Roaming Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Roaming Engineer, you need a solid understanding of mobile telecommunications, GSM/UMTS/LTE networks, and international roaming protocols, typically backed by a degree in telecommunications or a related field. Familiarity with network monitoring tools, signaling analyzers, and certifications such as CCNA or vendor-specific credentials is often required. Excellent problem-solving, communication, and collaboration skills are crucial for resolving complex roaming issues and coordinating with global teams. These abilities ensure seamless connectivity for roaming subscribers and efficient troubleshooting in a fast-paced, interconnected environment.

What is a Remote Roaming Engineer?

A Remote Roaming Engineer is a telecommunications professional who specializes in configuring, monitoring, and troubleshooting roaming services for mobile networks, often while working remotely. Their main responsibilities include ensuring seamless international and national roaming for subscribers, analyzing network performance, and resolving issues related to connectivity or interoperability between different operators. They collaborate with operators, vendors, and internal teams to optimize roaming agreements, test new services, and maintain compliance with industry standards. This role requires expertise in mobile network technologies such as GSM, LTE, and 5G, as well as strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

E-Space

Saratoga, CA • Remote

Full-time

Job description

Ready to make connectivity from space universally accessible, secure and actionable? Then you’ve come to the right place!

E-Space is bridging Earth and space to enable hyper-scaled deployments of Internet of Things (IoT) solutions and services. We are building a highly-advanced low Earth orbit (LEO) space system that will fundamentally change the design, economics, manufacturing and service delivery associated with traditional satellite and terrestrial IoT systems.

We’re intentional, we’re unapologetically curious and we’re 100% committed to innovate space-based communications and deliver actionable intelligence that will expand global economies, protect space and our planet and enhance our overall quality of life.

We are looking for a Software Integration Lead to own the integration of back-end subscriber and business support systems with E-Space's 5G Core network. This is a hands-on technical leadership role sitting at the boundary between the core network and the systems that provision, manage, and bill subscribers — SIM and eSIM provisioning, CRM, billing and charging, and device management. You will own the interface contracts, drive integration delivery, and ensure these systems interoperate correctly with core network functions end-to-end, spanning satellite and ground environments.

What you will do:
  • Own the integration architecture and delivery for back-end systems that interface directly with the 5G Core: SIM/eSIM provisioning, CRM, billing and online/offline charging, and device management.
  • Define and implement the integration between SIM and eSIM provisioning infrastructure and core subscriber management — including subscriber profile delivery, remote SIM provisioning workflows, and profile lifecycle management across satellite and ground.
  • Design and own the interface between CRM and the core network: subscriber record synchronisation, service entitlement and quota management, and real-time event delivery for customer-facing workflows.
  • Lead integration of the billing and charging stack with the core charging interfaces — CDR generation and delivery, online charging authorization flows, and reconciliation between core charging events and BSS billing records.
  • Integrate device management capabilities with core network functions, including device policy enforcement, configuration delivery, and status signalling across the satellite link.
  • Define interface contracts (API specifications, data models, event schemas) at each BSS/OSS-to-core boundary; maintain them as the engineering source of truth shared across core software and back-end platform teams.
  • Build and maintain integration test harnesses for each BSS/OSS-to-core interface; drive automation and define acceptance criteria for every interface at each release milestone.
  • Own defect triage and root-cause analysis for integration failures at BSS/OSS-to-core boundaries; coordinate resolution across core software and back-end platform engineering teams.
  • Lead and mentor a small integration engineering team (2–4 engineers); set delivery cadence and engineering quality standards.
What you bring to this role:
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Electrical/Computer Engineering, or a related field.
  • 12+ years of software engineering experience, with significant focus on BSS/OSS integration with mobile core networks.
  • Strong understanding of 5G Core subscriber management and the interfaces that connect BSS/OSS systems to the core — authentication, session management, policy, and charging.
  • Hands-on experience integrating SIM or eSIM provisioning infrastructure (SM-DP+, SM-SR, or equivalent) with mobile core subscriber management systems.
  • Experience integrating CRM and billing platforms with telecom core networks: service provisioning APIs, online/offline charging interfaces, CDR delivery, and event-driven subscriber data updates.
  • Experience with device management integration in a mobile or IoT context: policy enforcement, remote configuration, and status reporting over cellular.
  • Strong API design and integration engineering skills: REST and event-driven interface specification, data model design, and integration test automation.
  • Experience leading small software integration teams with clear API contract discipline and release tracking.
Bonus points for the following:
  • Experience with eSIM and remote SIM provisioning in a satellite or IoT connectivity context.
  • Background in MVNO BSS/OSS integration: multi-PLMN subscriber management, roaming data exchange, or MVNO billing stack integration.
  • Familiarity with cloud-native core deployment and how containerised network functions affect BSS/OSS integration patterns.
  • Experience in a startup or fast-paced R&D environment where integration scope expands rapidly.
  • Prior work with government or defence connectivity platforms with BSS/OSS integration requirements.

This is a full time, exempt position, based out of our Saratoga, CA office.

The total compensation packaged will be determined by various factors such as your relevant job-related knowledge, skills, and experience.

We are redefining how satellites are designed, manufactured and used—so we’re looking for candidates with passion, deep knowledge and direct experience on LEO satellite component development, design and in-orbit activities. If that’s your experience – then we’ll be immediately wow-ed.
