Job description

Director, Regulatory Response and Examination Management
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF SUNSTRONG MANAGEMENT
SunStrong Management is a leading independent asset management and servicing platform specializing in residential and commercial solar energy portfolios. SunStrong provides end-to-end services including operations and maintenance, customer billing and support, asset performance management, and investor reporting. The company partners with leading capital providers to optimize clean energy assets at scale, supporting the growth of distributed renewable energy while delivering reliable performance and exceptional customer experience. This is a remote position.
THE DIRECTOR, REGULATORY RESPONSE AND EXAMINATION MANAGEMENT POSITION
SunStrong Management is building out its regulatory response and examination management function to support a growing national portfolio. This role owns it.
SunStrong Management operates across a national footprint, which means a continuous flow of inquiries, examinations, and information requests from state regulators, federal agencies, investors, and quasi-governmental entities. Each arrives with its own scope, requirements, and timeline.
The Director of Regulatory Response and Examination Management designs that function and runs it. This is an opportunity to shape a regulatory response operation at real scale, with executive visibility and the authority to set how it works.
The person in this seat is accountable for driving matters to resolution, not for reporting status. Success is measured by items closed, deadlines met without escalation, and a process that holds up under examination.
Position Summary
The Director, Regulatory Response and Examination Management leads the organization's response to regulatory inquiries, audits, examinations, and enforcement matters affecting its solar asset management operations and underlying project portfolios. This role serves as the primary point of coordination between the company, its regulators, and internal stakeholders during examinations conducted by state public utility commissions, FERC, ISOs/RTOs, tax authorities, environmental agencies, and investor/lender compliance reviews. The Director builds and manages the frameworks, processes, and teams needed to respond accurately, efficiently, and defensibly to regulatory requests while minimizing operational and financial risk.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Regulatory Examination & Inquiry Management
  • Serve as the primary organizational lead for managing regulatory examinations, audits, inquiries, subpoenas, and data requests from federal and state regulators (e.g., FERC, state PUCs, ISOs/RTOs, IRS/tax equity auditors, and environmental agencies).
  • Develop and execute examination response plans, including timelines, document production strategy, subject-matter expert coordination, and escalation protocols.
  • Serve as a liaison with regulators and outside counsel, ensuring consistent, accurate, and timely communication throughout examinations.
  • Track examination status, findings, and required remediation across the solar asset portfolio, maintaining a centralized examination log for leadership and board reporting.
Response Coordination & Documentation
  • Coordinate cross-functionally with Legal, Asset Management, Engineering, Finance, and Operations teams to gather, validate, and produce accurate data and documentation in response to regulatory requests.
  • Draft and review formal regulatory responses, data requests, and correspondence, ensuring alignment with legal strategy and factual accuracy.
  • Maintain document management protocols and privilege logs to support examination readiness and defensible response practices.
Regulatory Risk & Compliance Program Development
  • Build and maintain a regulatory examination readiness program, including mock audits, response playbooks, and staff training on examination protocols.
  • Monitor evolving regulatory requirements affecting solar generation assets, interconnection compliance, RPS/REC programs, tax equity structures, and market participation rules; assess impact on the portfolio.
  • Partner with Compliance and Risk teams to identify examination trends and root causes, driving corrective action and process improvements.
  • Support development of policies, procedures, and internal controls that reduce regulatory risk exposure across the asset portfolio.

Stakeholder & Leadership Engagement
  • Prepare executive and board-level briefings summarizing examination status, findings, and risk mitigation strategies.
  • Advise senior leadership on regulatory risk implications for acquisitions, financing, and portfolio transactions.
  • Manage and mentor a team of regulatory analysts/specialists, building examination management capability and bench strength.
  • Engage with external counsel, consultants, and industry associations on regulatory strategy and emerging examination trends.

REQUIREMENTS
  • 10+ years of experience managing relationships with and responses to third-party regulators and investors, including state regulatory agencies, federal agencies, examination bodies, and institutional investors or capital partners
  • Demonstrated experience running multi-jurisdiction regulatory response or examination programs, including concurrent matters with independent scopes and deadlines
  • Experience designing, improving, and scaling regulatory response processes, not solely operating within an established one
  • Experience managing document collection and production at volume, including coordination across multiple source systems and business units
  • Proven ability to drive cross-functional accountability without direct authority over the people doing the work
  • Strong written work product, including the ability to prepare first drafts suitable for legal and compliance review
  • Sound judgment handling confidential, privileged, and sensitive material

Preferred
  • Background in mortgage servicing, consumer finance, solar finance, or another heavily regulated consumer-facing industry
  • Experience with state licensing examinations and audit readiness
  • Familiarity with formal information request and subpoena response mechanics
  • Experience managing outside counsel relationships and external legal spending
  • JD is not required for this role

physical requirements
  • Extended period working at a computer workstation

Benefits

  • HDHP and PPO Medical Plans, buy-up plans for both Dental and Vision, ancillaries such as Accident, Critical illness, Hospital indemnity, Short term and Long-Term Disability, Voluntary Life, and legal services along with multiple add-ons.
