Job description
We're determined to make a difference and are proud to be an insurance company that goes well beyond coverages and policies. Working here means having every opportunity to achieve your goals - and to help others accomplish theirs, too. Join our team as we help shape the future.
At The Hartford, our Risk Services organization exists to help people and businesses thrive by working directly with customers to assess risk, improve resilience, and deliver practical risk mitigation solutions that make a measurable difference. We partner with customers throughout their lifecycle to identify exposures, reduce losses, and strengthen operational performance-combining consultative expertise, technology enabled risk solutions, and data driven insights to improve outcomes before and after a loss. By integrating risk assessment, prevention, and recovery with the broader insurance experience, we help customers protect what matters most while building trust, long-term value, and sustainable advantages for both our customers and our enterprise.
As a Senior Ergonomic Consultant, you will contribute to corporate goals of growth and profitability using technical expertise to identify musculoskeletal risk and lead corporate strategy to minimize ergonomic exposures, improve related field productivity, quality, and Worker's Compensation loss experience. Additionally, you will work to develop practical solutions including countermeasures targeting specific exposures, training, programs, and procedures to enable Risk Engineering Field Consultant's and policyholders to reduce and manage risk and injuries and provide ergonomics consultation alone or as part of a comprehensive service plan with targeted exposure elimination and /or reduction activities driven by engineering solutions.
This role offers a remote work arrangement but requires the candidate to reside in the Northeast or Southeast to effectively support regional operations, clients, and partners.
Job requires travel for client site surveys and/or agency meeting/presentations. Travel could involve car and air travel (estimate 20-40%).
This position can be hired at various levels depending upon background and experience
Responsibilities:
- Conduct policyholder ergonomic focused needs assessments to identify loss sources, risk exposures, and opportunities for improvement in productivity, efficiency, and quality.
- Review financial benefits of implementing operational changes by leading decision makers through cost benefit presentations and ROI discussions.
- Develop service plans to reduce frequency and severity of musculoskeletal claims and increase efficiency and effectiveness of operations.
- Conduct job and workstation evaluations to identify musculoskeletal risks that are likely to cause discomfort, injury, or reduced quality/productivity
- Develop customized engineering and administrative controls to reduce frequency and severity of musculoskeletal injuries, reduce exposure to musculoskeletal risk, and/or increase productivity and product quality.
- Assist insured's in developing policies and programs and procedures, work instructions and training materials to reduce frequency and severity of musculoskeletal injuries and discomfort.
- Review insured's ergonomics-related policies and programs and recommend changes where necessary to ensure effective administration and implementation.
- Review loss data and conduct trending analyses to enable identification and targeting of loss sources to reduce work-related discomfort and injuries
- Cultivate ergonomic success stories that illustrate results, supported by exposure identification, cost/benefit presentations, and exposure elimination.
- Provide guidance and oversight, and collaborate with Risk Engineering staff to ensure coordinated, effective ergonomics-related services.
- Create tools, resources, and deliverables for Risk Engineering field consultant's and customers that are targeted at ergonomic priorities and driving positive results (reducing exposures and losses).
- Identify ergonomic opportunities and assist the field in identifying opportunities for ergonomic interventions and elevating complex ergonomic work for all levels of the organization.
- Communicate trends, ergonomic innovations and solutions within the field of ergonomics.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor of Science degree (B.S.) from a four-year college or university and 3+ years of ergonomics consultation in insurance loss prevention or general industry is required, with an academic focus on Occupational Safety and Health or Risk Management or Master's degree in Ergonomics, on Occupational Safety and Health, Human Factors Engineering or related field is preferred.
- Professional designation including CPE, CAE, AEP, CIE, etc. is recommended based on specialty. No licensing required.
- A minimum of 5 years of industry experience in a safety related role; property and casualty insurance experience highly desired

- Must have the knowledge and skill to handle all Survey and Service work assignments for all lines of business
- Strong consultative skills. Must work at an advanced skill level when providing service.
- This would include the demonstration of operational loss analysis reports and accident investigations used to direct services that would eliminate or control conditions that could lead to potential losses
