Job description

ABOUT THE ROLE

The Sr. Project Engineer will provide advanced performance analysis, design expertise, technical due diligence support on utility-scale solar and energy storage projects during the development, design, construction, and operation phases. You will act as a technical lead for the rest of the Engineering team and partners with senior leadership across departments on critical tasks.

WHAT YOU'LL DO

  • Evaluate, analyze, and recommend equipment and design specifications to external suppliers and internal Procurement partners based on technical design of the project.
  • Create and review photovoltaic (PV) and energy storage production estimates using commercial software programs like PVsyst or in-house models. Provide review of 3rd party modeling and studies. 
  • Lead development of in-house models and provide guidance on evolving best practices for model assumptions and uncertainty assessment.
  • Lead Independent Engineer (IE) due diligence including contract management, reviewing IE reports, IE energy assessments, and providing feedback as needed.
  • Provide subject matter expertise in a variety of areas and shape department best practices for Owner Engineering review and approval. Collaborate with engineering team members.
  • Serves as the expert on the Engineering team by maintaining current industry knowledge and effectively sharing with team and senior leadership.
  • Provide technical review, input, and risk assessment, and lead technical negotiations for key contracts and agreements including Interconnection, Equipment Procurement, Power Purchase, EPC, and O&M.
  • Provide guidance for, and review of, conceptual system design and site layouts for both PV and energy storage.
  • Develop technical specifications for engineering design guidelines. Serve as SME in discussions with contractors. Make design alternative decisions based on value engineering analysis and risk assessment.
  • Collaborate with individual department, as well as cross-functionally with other departments within the organization.
  • Maintain organizational excellence in terms of project timelines and deliverables.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

  • Education: Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, or related field.
  • Experience: Minimum of 7 years of experience in electrical engineering, the electrical power industry, or related, including a minimum of 5 years of experience in photovoltaic and/or energy storage engineering
  • Technology: Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, and an ability to learn company-specific software programs, tools, processes, and machines.
  • Skills/Attributes:
    • Subject matter expert in several specific types of equipment and understanding technical specs associated with advantages and risks of using a product.
    • Expert in advanced energy modeling methodologies, adept at creating sophisticated models to accurately predict energy dynamics and enhance system efficiency.
    • Ability to effectively lead engineering due diligence for financing and independent engineering partners.
    • Comfortable leading various aspects of value engineering and doing initial investigation of pros and cons, and provide influence in the design decisions.
    • Subject matter expert of test procedures and test results based on EPC Agreements.
    • Proven ability to build, navigate, and manage complex interpersonal relationships and conflicts, fostering collaborative relationships internally and externally.
    • Ability to independently anticipate, gather, and understand project requirements to effectively lead project engineering. Identify roadblocks and help identify resolution.
    • Skilled in engineering project management, including coordinating multifaceted projects, allocating resources, and mitigating risks to achieve successful outcomes.
    • Highly skilled in explaining complex details clearly, ensuring everyone on the team understands.
    • Self-motivated to work through complex problems and competing priorities, including a high level of detail and organization.
    • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
