Remote Residential Structural Engineer information

What does a remote residential structural engineer do?

A Remote Residential Structural Engineer is responsible for designing, analyzing, and ensuring the safety and stability of residential buildings, such as houses and apartments, while working from a remote location. They use engineering software and collaborate with architects, contractors, and homeowners to create structural plans that comply with building codes and regulations. Their work often includes evaluating existing structures, providing recommendations for repairs or renovations, and preparing detailed reports and drawings. Working remotely, they leverage digital communication tools to manage projects and interact with clients and team members efficiently.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote residential structural engineer?

To thrive as a Remote Residential Structural Engineer, you need a solid background in structural engineering principles, a relevant engineering degree, and a Professional Engineer (PE) license. Proficiency with design and analysis software such as AutoCAD, Revit, and structural analysis tools is essential, along with experience in digital project management systems. Strong communication, problem-solving, and self-motivation are crucial soft skills for effective client collaboration and independent work. These abilities ensure safe, code-compliant designs and successful project delivery in a remote environment.

How does a remote residential structural engineer typically collaborate with architects and contractors during a project?

As a Remote Residential Structural Engineer, you will regularly collaborate with architects and contractors through virtual meetings, shared project management platforms, and digital document exchanges. Effective communication is essential to ensure that your structural plans align with architectural designs and that any on-site issues are addressed promptly. You may also review construction progress remotely using photos, videos, and real-time site data. Building strong digital relationships and maintaining clear, timely communication are key to overcoming the unique challenges of remote work in this field.

Job description

About Us

Higharc is a VC-backed startup that is changing how new homes are designed and built. Join a founding team who’ve shipped products for Autodesk, Electronic Arts, Nike, and Apple. We have raised over $175M with support from top-notch venture capital firms and more than 18 strategic investors: industry leaders in construction, building products manufacturing, and distribution.

Higharc is seeking a hands-on Sr. Software Engineer to bring framing and structural analysis to the products homebuilders use every day. You'll be an early member of a new team, working on emerging technology where the roadmap, and the team around it is still taking shape.

What You'll Do

You'll help set technical direction as much as you write code, and you'll be comfortable with priorities shifting as the team finds its footing.

It's primarily an individual-contributor seat with room to grow into a tech lead. You don't need to be a career structural engineer, but structural or mechanical engineering experience is a real asset as you'll be the person who understands how framing and structural systems actually work and can turn that into software.

Expect to:

  • Design and implement the algorithms and systems behind framing and structural analysis, from early prototypes to a shippable MVP.

  • Use AI-assisted workflows to build quickly while owning the correctness, maintainability, and behavior of everything you ship.

  • Partner with product, customer success, and other engineers to define expected behavior, surface gaps, and keep customers happy.

  • Bring structural engineering judgment to the team, translating how framing and structural systems work into robust software.

  • Write tests that hold up against the worst corner cases.

  • Help shape a new team's technical direction and mentor others as it grows.

  • Navigate ambiguity as scope and priorities evolve on an emerging team.

About You

You prioritize working software over perfection. You like to ship, get user feedback, and iterate, and you're happy to dig deep into a codebase to contribute effectively to it. You're hands-on but keep the bigger strategic picture in view, and you're energized by building something new where the path isn't fully mapped yet. A genuine interest in homebuilding, construction, or home design is a plus, because you'll be helping elevate an entire industry.

You have:

  • 3–5 years of professional software engineering experience, ideally in TypeScript.

  • Structural or mechanical engineering experience, whether academic or professional.

  • Familiarity with computational geometry and mathematical modeling.

  • Professional fluency with modern development tools, including AI-assisted workflows, paired with clear ownership of the correctness and maintainability of the code you produce.

  • Comfort operating in ambiguity on a new and emerging team.

  • The ability to communicate tradeoffs, delivery timelines, and decisions clearly within a dynamic organization.

A major plus if you also bring:

  • Experience building framing, structural analysis, or CAD/CAM tooling.

  • A background moving between engineering stacks — many strong engineers in this space come from C# or Python, and picking up TypeScript and React is expected, not a barrier.

Working at Higharc

Remote work and travel: Our company is entirely remote, and has been since we were founded in 2018. Remote work means more time with family, less time commuting, and the flexibility to blend work and life. We value in-person collaboration and asynchronous deep-work time, which is why we schedule regular team meet-ups in our hubs across the US and, depending on the role, prioritize hiring in those hubs. If your role requires frequent travel beyond pre-scheduled team meet ups, we will represent that to the best of our ability as early as possible in the interview process.

Compensation and benefits: Higharc offers competitive salaries with significant equity, in a fast-growing, well-funded company. We provide comprehensive medical, dental, and vision coverage, with flexible PTO, and meaningful maternity/paternity leave to all U.S based employees that are full-time. You'll also have access to other big-company benefits such like short and long-term disability plans and a 401K. We also provide a stipend to create the ideal home office and support ongoing L&D.
Please note: we are seeing an uptick of fraudulent recruiting activity claiming to be associated with Higharc. All communication and outreach from our in-house team will come from an @higharc.com email address.
