Remote Research Students are typically enrolled in a university program and participate in research as part of their academic coursework or internships. Remote Research Assistants usually hold relevant degrees or experience and support research projects remotely, often in academic or research institutions. Both roles involve research tasks but differ mainly in their educational status and employment context.

How do Remote Research Students typically collaborate with their supervisors and peers despite working off-site?

Remote Research Students often use a combination of video calls, collaborative online platforms, and regular email updates to maintain strong communication with their supervisors and research teams. Weekly or biweekly virtual meetings are common to discuss progress, challenges, and feedback. Many institutions also provide access to shared databases and project management tools, making it easier to coordinate tasks and share findings in real time. Building proactive communication habits is key to ensuring you stay connected and supported throughout your research.

What is a Remote Research Student?

A Remote Research Student is typically a student engaged in academic or scientific research who works from a location outside of a traditional campus or laboratory setting, often from home or another remote environment. This role involves conducting literature reviews, data analysis, experiments, or writing research papers, all facilitated by digital communication and collaboration tools. Remote research students may work independently or as part of a virtual research team, communicating with supervisors and colleagues through video calls, email, and online project management platforms. This arrangement offers flexibility and can be ideal for students balancing other commitments or those located far from their institution. However, it also requires strong self-motivation, time management, and communication skills.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote Research Student, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Research Student, you need strong analytical skills, academic research proficiency, and a solid foundation in your field of study, often demonstrated through current enrollment in a relevant degree program. Familiarity with research databases, online collaboration platforms (such as Zoom or Slack), and citation management tools like EndNote or Zotero is typically required. Self-motivation, time management, and effective virtual communication are standout soft skills for success in this role. These abilities ensure the student can independently conduct high-quality research, collaborate remotely, and contribute meaningfully to academic projects.

  • Leading and mentoring the tax team, including a senior tax manager and 3 tax accountants
  • Preparing personal and corporate tax planning documents and making updates to clients' payroll settings to adjust for planning goals
  • Preparing and reviewing business and individual tax returns
  • Developing and monitoring key performance indicators (KPIs) to track team performance, make data-driven decisions, and ensure compliance with accounting standards, regulations, and company policies
  • Responding to client tax notices (business and personal, income, payroll, and other)
  • Creating tax projections, scenario modeling, and other analyses in our tax software

You'll have a flexible schedule, be able to work-from-anywhere, and participate in company benefit programs. Compensation for this role starts at $120k-180k, with opportunities for bonuses based on goals and metrics.
Qualities to Bring to This Position:
  • You'll be able to balance being approachable yet professional in your communications-written and verbal
  • You're an avid student of the latest in accounting rules, regulations, and guidelines-in fact, you geek out about it a little bit
  • You're a CPA with 8+ years of experience, the majority of which is in public accounting settings where you serve a variety of clients
  • You're comfortable in client-facing relationships and enjoy getting to know our clients' businesses (and them as people too!)
  • You'll be detail-oriented, avoiding spelling errors or other careless mistakes in your work
  • You'll be an amazing communicator-making sure any soon-to-be missed deadlines are communicated about ahead of time
  • You're super-comfortable working online, in cloud-based applications, and using a variety of software tools
  • Your discretion is top-notch; our clients' privacy and sensitive information are always protected
  • You've got a proactive attitude and love finding new and better ways to help us get our work done well
  • You're a get-it-done kind of person and will ensure client deadlines are met and that we're following through on our commitments
  • You have experience with at least one type of cloud-based accounting platform (preferably Xero, but could be QBO, Sage, Netsuite, etc)
  • You also have experience with one of the major tax prep software packages
  • And you've used some project management, task management, or practice management tool, so keeping track of your upcoming work and logging what you've done comes naturally to you

Thank you for considering the position, and hope you'll be interested in joining the Revel CPA team!
