What is a remote relationship banker?

A Remote Relationship Banker is a financial professional who provides banking services and advice to clients through digital channels such as phone, video calls, email, or chat, instead of traditional in-person meetings at a branch. They help clients manage accounts, offer guidance on banking products, resolve issues, and assist with financial planning remotely. This role requires strong communication skills, a good understanding of banking products, and the ability to build relationships with clients virtually. The remote aspect allows customers to receive personalized banking support from anywhere, making banking more convenient and accessible.

How does a remote relationship banker build and maintain strong client relationships without in-person interactions?

Remote Relationship Bankers use a variety of digital communication tools—such as secure messaging, video calls, and phone consultations—to connect with clients. Building trust remotely requires proactive outreach, regular check-ins, and personalized financial advice tailored to each client's needs. Success in this role often depends on strong listening skills, timely responses, and the ability to resolve issues efficiently, all while ensuring clients feel supported and valued despite the absence of face-to-face meetings.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote relationship banker?

To thrive as a Remote Relationship Banker, you need a solid understanding of banking products, financial regulations, and customer service, often supported by a bachelor's degree in finance or a related field. Familiarity with CRM software, virtual communication platforms, and banking systems is typically required, and certifications like Series 6 or 63 can be advantageous. Strong interpersonal skills, active listening, and problem-solving abilities help build trust and rapport with clients remotely. These skills and qualifications are crucial for effectively managing client relationships, ensuring compliance, and delivering high-quality financial solutions in a remote environment.

What is the difference between Remote Relationship Banker vs Remote Customer Service Representative?

What you'll be doing

Commercial Banking supports clients with tailored financing, risk management, and strategic advice to help their businesses grow with confidence. As a Senior Group Portfolio Manager, you'll lead portfolio management and first line of accountability risk management activities for a defined group of commercial or corporate banking clients, ensuring work is executed in a way that reflects CIBC's risk culture and business priorities.

You'll provide leadership to Portfolio Managers, Associates, and Credit Analysts by setting clear direction, building team capability, and creating an inclusive, high-performing environment. In this role, you'll guide underwriting and credit decisions, advise on deal structure, oversee portfolio maintenance activities, and act as a key escalation point to support a strong client onboarding and closing experience. You'll also represent the group in portfolio reviews, loan committee discussions, control activities, and regulatory or internal review processes, while partnering closely with Relationship Managers, Market Leaders, Group Heads, Credit Risk, and Portfolio Administration teams.

Details on your work arrangement (proportion of on-site and remote work) will be discussed at the time of your interview.

How you'll succeed

Lead portfolio management oversight - Direct portfolio management activities across a defined area of coverage, ensuring reviews, renewals, reporting, risk ratings, pricing grid reviews, and remediation items are completed accurately and on time.
Drive sound underwriting and approval practices - Partner with Relationship Managers, Market Leaders, and Group Heads to advise on deal structure, risk, and resource requirements, while exercising delegated credit and non-credit approval authorities within approved limits.
Strengthen execution and client experience - Manage workflow visibility and pipeline activity, support onboarding and closing processes, and act as an escalation point to resolve issues that may affect timely delivery or the client experience.
Champion risk management and controls - Lead first line risk management practices, support quarterly control requirements, oversee higher-risk transactions, and help the team prepare for internal credit reviews and external regulatory examinations.
Develop people and team capability - Set clear expectations, provide ongoing coaching and feedback, create development opportunities, and build a positive team environment aligned with CIBC's mission, vision, and values.
Collaborate across partners - Serve as a key liaison with Credit Risk, Head of Portfolio Administration, and business partners to address portfolio issues, provide strategic direction, and support consistent decision-making across the group.

Who you are

You're an experienced portfolio and credit leader. You bring strong experience in commercial or corporate banking, with deep knowledge of underwriting, credit structuring, portfolio management, and risk oversight in a complex lending environment.
You know how to lead through complexity. You can set direction, prioritize competing demands, and guide a team through high-volume workflows while maintaining strong quality and risk discipline.
You're a thoughtful decision-maker. You use sound judgment to assess credit risk, identify emerging issues, and make recommendations that balance client needs with prudent risk management.
You're a collaborative partner. You build strong working relationships across business and risk teams, and you're confident engaging with senior stakeholders, support partners, and clients when needed.
You develop people with intention. You provide clear feedback, remove obstacles, and create opportunities that help team members grow their skills and perform at their best.
Values matter to you. You bring your real self to work, and you live our values - trust, teamwork, and accountability.
