Job description

We are seeking an Application & Data Developer to support biomedical and translational research within a collaborative biostatistics, biomedical informatics and data science environment. This role focuses on developing and integrating applications and data solutions that enable researchers to effectively use clinical data, including electronic health record (EHR) data, to advance discovery and improve patient outcomes.

The successful candidate will bring hands-on experience working with EHR data, along with a solid foundation in full-stack application development. This individual will work closely with interdisciplinary teams of developers, data analysts, clinicians, and researchers to design, build, and support tools for data integration, data pipelines, and research applications.

This is a collaborative, team-oriented role where success depends on strong communication, shared problem-solving, and the ability to work across technical and non-technical stakeholders. The position also requires curiosity, adaptability, and the ability to independently learn and apply new technologies in a rapidly evolving research environment.

Duties to include but not limited to:

         Partner with researchers, clinicians, and technical staff to translate research needs into scalable data and application solutions

         Collaborate with colleagues and research community end users to define functional/technical specifications and offer solutions. Contribute to design and analysis.

         Develop and maintain data pipelines and integrations supporting research data workflows using established tools and systems.

         Deploy and support applications that enable secure access to clinical and research data.

         Collaborate with cross-functional teams to troubleshoot data and application issues in research environments

         Review and analyze software defects. Troubleshoot/debug/identify malfunctioning systems. Implement software fixes.

         Provide start to finish oversight for small projects with guidance as needed.

         Scope potential projects to create summaries and make recommendations.

         Serve as liaison between research teams and technical staff to ensure solutions meet scientific and operational needs.

         Identify business system solution requirements by analyzing work processes and operations; evaluate business and information systems functionality.

         Build and foster relationships. May provide management in specific areas of expertise.

         Seek ways to improve assigned processes.

This position is eligible for hybrid work within Iowa and will require a work arrangement form to be completed upon the start of your employment. Per policy, work arrangements will be reviewed annually, and must comply with the remote work program and related policies and employee travel policy when working at a remote location.  

About ICTS: The Institute for Clinical and Translational Science (ICTS) at the University of Iowa was approved by the Iowa Board of Regents in 2007 to support the work of investigators involved in clinical and translational science. Our mission is to accelerate translational science through programs to develop the translational workforce, to promote engagement of community members and other stakeholders, to promote research integration across the lifespan, and to catalyze innovative clinical and translational research. Required Qualifications

         Bachelor's degree in computer science, biomedical informatics, data science, publica health or a related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

         Three years of professional experience in application development and data engineering

         Demonstrated experience working with electronic health record (EHR) data, including querying, transforming, and preparing data for research or clinical analysis

         Proficiency in at least one modern programming language (e.g., Python, Java, C#, or R)

         Experience with web application development and at least one modern framework (e.g., Django, Flask, .NET, Spring, Node.js, React, Angular)

         Experience working with relational databases and SQL; familiarity with data modeling and integration

         Experience integrating systems using APIs

         Understanding of web technologies (HTML, CSS, JavaScript, JSON/XML)

         Strong collaboration and communication skills, with the ability to work effectively across interdisciplinary teams

         Ability to work independently, manage priorities, and adapt in a fast-paced research environment

Desirable Qualifications

         Experience working with Epic or other major EHR systems

         Familiarity with clinical and research data standards (e.g., FHIR, HL7, OMOP, PCORNet)

         Experience building or supporting data pipelines or data warehouse environments

         Familiarity with cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, or GCP) and containerization (Docker)

         Experience with data visualization tools (Tableau, Power BI, or similar)

         Understanding of data privacy, security, and compliance (e.g., HIPAA)

         Experience in academic health care, biomedical research, or CTSA environments

         Exposure to CI/CD workflows and version control systems (Git)

         Demonstrated interest in learning new technologies and solving complex data problems
