What is a remote Python GIS job?

A remote Python GIS job involves working with Geographic Information Systems (GIS) using the Python programming language, but from a location outside of a traditional office, such as from home or anywhere with internet access. Professionals in this role typically analyze spatial data, develop geospatial applications, and automate GIS workflows using Python libraries like GeoPandas, Shapely, and ArcPy. Remote GIS Python developers often collaborate with teams virtually, contribute to mapping projects, and help solve geographic problems across various industries such as environmental science, urban planning, and logistics.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote Python GIS Specialist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Python GIS Specialist, you need strong expertise in Python programming, geospatial data analysis, and a background in geography, GIS, or a related field. Familiarity with tools such as ArcGIS, QGIS, and libraries like GeoPandas or GDAL, as well as experience with version control systems like Git, is typically required. Excellent problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective remote communication skills help professionals excel in distributed teams. These skills are crucial for delivering accurate geospatial solutions and collaborating efficiently in a remote work environment.

How do remote Python GIS professionals typically collaborate with team members and stakeholders on geospatial projects?

Remote Python GIS professionals often work closely with cross-functional teams, including data analysts, project managers, and domain experts, using virtual communication and collaboration tools. They participate in regular video meetings, share progress via project management platforms, and use version control systems like Git to manage code collaboratively. Effective communication and clear documentation are crucial, as team members may be distributed across different time zones. Additionally, remote GIS professionals frequently present their findings and visualizations to stakeholders, adapting technical outputs for non-technical audiences.

What is the difference between Remote Python Gis vs Remote GIS Analyst?

JOB TITLE: Senior Data Scientist, Audience Analytics for Healthy Communities

WHO WE ARE: At Fors Marsh, we take on issues that matter. We are a team of researchers, strategists, and communicators working together to drive lasting change. We look at human behavior from all angles with a deep understanding of people and context to design solutions that influence decision-making and move people to action. Our work promotes health and well-being, shapes resilient communities, and builds effective and accountable institutions. We are a certified B Corporation and a Top Workplace for 7 consecutive years.

WHO WE ARE LOOKING FOR:

Fors Marsh is seeking an experienced quantitative researcher to serve as Senior Data Scientist in our Audience Analytics for Healthy Communities division (AA4HC), which applies data science and research to create actionable insights and plan and optimize communication campaigns, primarily national campaigns for federal clients. The division uses applied data architecture, programming, data visualization, GIS mapping, and statistical modeling to segment audiences and reach them efficiently and effectively. We also combine data from disparate sources into interactive dashboards to facilitate campaign management, optimization, and reporting. The selected individual will conduct data analysis, infrastructure, and visualization as part of projects to identify, understand, and track audiences for public education campaigns including tobacco/nicotine education campaigns. This will include coordinating with internal teams and vendors to integrate campaign media data into campaign performance dashboards. This person will provide technical guidance and coordinate the completion of project tasks and deliverables across teams and team members, upholding high standards for the team to exceed client expectations.

Responsibilities include:

    • Data engineering, including developing scripts to automate advertising analytics/survey data cleaning and process reviews using ETL/ELT pipelines with medallion architecture (Python and R)
    • Building and maintaining data visualizations for data exploration and trend analysis using Tableau and PowerBI dashboards.
    • Conduct data analysis to interpret complex data, identify patterns, and shape actionable insights (including reports, presentations, and models). This includes descriptive reporting, casual inference, segmentation, and predictive modeling.
    • Regular client interactions, such as presentations, reports, and status meetings to develop and refine data solutions to meet client needs, report on project progress, and share results.
    • Ongoing communication with vendors and internal communication campaign teams to represent findings, coordinate next steps, navigate joint decision-making, and discuss potential implications
    • Working in a collaborative team environment to logically design communication campaigns based on data.

    Qualifications:

      • At least 5 years' relevant experience with data science, segmentation, or communications planning
      • Master's degree in social science, data science, public health, statistics, marketing or related field. PHD preferred
      • Proficiency with data visualization tools like Tableau, Power BI, or similar
      • Experience in working with Cloud computing servers (e.g. AWS) and data and data science related services (e.g., RDS, S3, SageMaker).
      • Expertise in Python
      • Proficiency in R and SQL
      • Experience using database and ETL systems to query and extract data using medallion architecture
      • Data science experienced including supervised, semi-supervised, and unsupervised models; generalized linear/additive models; mixed models; random forest; clustering techniques; Bayesian approaches; cross-validation and model performance evaluation
      • Experience working with large, complex, and nuanced datasets
      • Superior verbal and written communications skills
      • Applicants may be subject to a low-level government security investigation and must meet eligibility criteria for access to sensitive information
      • A collaborative, problem-solving mindset
      • Curiosity, flexibility, and a desire to learn

    Preferred Qualifications:

    • Applied experience with communications, media, or advertising
    • Experience with audience segmentation and proficiency in commercial segmentation (e.g., MRI-Simmons, Nielsen, Claritas)
    • Proficiency in GIS software (e.g. ArcGIS)
    • Knowledge of marketing metrics, marketing principles and terminology
    • Experience working with government public health agencies such as HHS, FDA, CDC, CMS, or statistical agencies like Census Bureau, Bureau of Labor Statistics, or Bureau of Economic Affairs.

    We Offer:
