What does a remote Python API developer do?

A Remote Python API Developer is responsible for designing, building, and maintaining application programming interfaces (APIs) using the Python programming language. These developers work from remote locations, collaborating with teams via online tools to create scalable and efficient APIs that allow different software applications to communicate. Their tasks often include writing clean and secure code, integrating third-party services, troubleshooting issues, and ensuring that APIs meet performance and security standards.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote Python API developer?

To thrive as a Remote Python API Developer, you need a solid understanding of Python programming, experience with RESTful API design, and familiarity with frameworks such as Django or Flask, often supported by a relevant degree or certifications. Proficiency in using version control systems like Git, API documentation tools (e.g., Swagger), and cloud platforms (such as AWS or Azure) is typically expected. Excellent problem-solving skills, self-motivation, and effective remote communication are crucial soft skills for success in this role. These competencies ensure robust API development, seamless team collaboration, and reliable delivery of scalable software solutions in a remote work environment.

What are some common challenges faced by remote Python API developers, and how can these be managed effectively?

Remote Python API Developers often face challenges such as coordinating with distributed teams across time zones, ensuring clear communication about API requirements, and managing code consistency and integration. To overcome these, it's important to use collaborative tools like version control systems, participate actively in code reviews, and schedule regular check-ins with team members. Adopting well-documented coding standards and leveraging automated testing can also help maintain code quality and streamline collaboration.

What is the difference between Remote Python Api Developer vs Remote Backend Developer?

AspectRemote Python Api DeveloperRemote Backend Developer

The Lead AI Engineer is a senior technical leader on AFL's AI Enablement team, responsible for defining the architecture, standards, and delivery approach for agentic AI solutions that automate the operational backbone of the business through workflow orchestration, model adaptation, and analytics. Working directly with the AI Enablement Manager, the Lead AI Engineer will establish the technical foundation the team builds on, including model selection and management, deployment posture, orchestration patterns, evaluation and audit. As the team grows, an AI Product Manager and AI Operations Specialists will join to take on intake, sequencing, stakeholder coordination, and product ownership of deployed solutions, allowing the team to stay focused on design, delivery, and maintenance of future solutions.

Responsibilities:

Key responsibilities/essential functions include:

Architecture & Technical Foundation

  • Establishes the architectural patterns, evaluation practices, and deployment standards for the team
  • Makes framework and model recommendations that set the foundation for the team. Will evaluate orchestration frameworks, select deployment patterns, train and fine-tune models, and determine where managed platforms end and custom build begins

Solution Design & Delivery

  • Collaborates with the AI Enablement Manager and business unit to optimize operational processes, owning the infrastructure architecture and translating strategic direction into technical plans, product life cycles, a prioritized backlog, and buildable work
  • Owns solutions end-to-end: technical planning, architecture, build, and deployment, then continuously monitors, iterates, and improves them to keep them reliable in production

Production Reliability

  • Recent hands-on experience architecting and delivering AI or LLM-backed systems in production
  • Experience architecting solutions from scratch and owning them through deployment, observability, testing, and ongoing reliability
  • Experience with AI development practices — model selection, fine-tuning, prompt engineering, evaluation frameworks, and understanding when each approach is the right fit
  • Proficiency in Python; experience with cloud platforms
  • Experience mentoring engineers and setting technical direction across multiple initiatives
  • Strong communication skills with both technical and non-technical stakeholders

Working Conditions:

  • Environment: Remote work environment (US-based).
