What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote Psychotherapist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Psychotherapist, you need a master's or doctoral degree in psychology or counseling, state licensure, and a solid base in therapeutic techniques. Proficiency with telehealth platforms, secure messaging systems, and HIPAA-compliant documentation tools is crucial. Strong active listening, empathy, and digital communication skills set professionals apart in building rapport and trust remotely. These skills ensure ethical, effective, and client-centered care in a virtual environment while maintaining confidentiality and engagement.

What is remote psychotherapy?

Remote psychotherapy, also known as online therapy or teletherapy, is a form of mental health counseling that is conducted over the internet or by phone rather than in person. Therapists and clients connect through secure video calls, phone calls, or messaging platforms. This approach allows clients to access professional mental health support from the comfort of their own home, making therapy more convenient and accessible. Remote psychotherapy is effective for a variety of mental health concerns and is often used for individual, couples, or group sessions.

What is the difference between Remote Psychotherapy vs Remote Counseling?

AspectRemote PsychotherapyRemote Counseling
CredentialsLicensed mental health professionals (e.g., psychologists, licensed therapists)Licensed counselors, social workers, or therapists
Work EnvironmentPrivate practice, clinics, telehealth platformsCommunity agencies, schools, private practice
Industry UsageHealthcare, mental health servicesEducational, social services, mental health
FocusIn-depth psychological treatment and diagnosisGuidance, support, and coping strategies

Remote Psychotherapy involves licensed mental health professionals providing in-depth psychological treatment via telehealth. Remote Counseling typically includes licensed counselors or social workers offering guidance and support. While both roles use similar credentials and work environments, psychotherapy focuses on diagnosis and long-term treatment, whereas counseling emphasizes immediate support and coping skills.

How does working as a remote psychotherapist impact collaboration with colleagues and supervision?

As a remote psychotherapist, you'll often communicate with colleagues and supervisors through secure digital platforms rather than in-person meetings. While this setup allows for greater flexibility, it can sometimes make spontaneous collaboration or informal peer support more challenging. Many organizations address this by scheduling regular virtual team meetings, case consultations, and supervision sessions to maintain professional connection and support. Being proactive in reaching out and participating in online forums or group chats can also help foster a sense of team cohesion and continued professional growth.

Job description

Mindful Care is hiring New York State Licensed Master Social Workers (LMSWs) to provide remote psychotherapy in a structured, supportive clinical environment.

This role is designed for clinicians who enjoy a consistent schedule and working with a variety of patients... without the burden of managing administrative logistics on their own.

You will be supported with built-in supervision, scheduling, and billing services, allowing you to focus on what matters most... patient care.

What to Expect

  • Consistent 4-day schedule with 10-hour shifts, no weekends required
  • Structured daily workflow designed to reduce unpredictability
  • Mix of 40-minute therapy sessions and 20-minute MicroTherapy sessions
  • Weekly clinical supervision to support growth toward LCSW

This is a more structured and active clinical environment than traditional outpatient therapy. Clinicians who thrive here tend to enjoy consistency, collaboration, and a steady, supported workflow.

What You Will Do

  • Provide individual psychotherapy sessions via telehealth
  • Conduct biopsychosocial assessments and intakes as needed
  • Deliver both long-term therapy and MicroTherapy sessions
  • Complete timely and accurate documentation in the EHR
  • Collaborate with psychiatric providers and clinical team members
  • Participate in weekly supervision and team collaboration
  • Support group therapy, intake, or MicroTherapy coverage as needed
  • Maintain compliance with HIPAA and all state and federal regulations
  • Practice a person-centered and ethical approach to care

What You Bring

  • Master's degree in Social Work and active LMSW license in New York
  • At least 2 years or 1000 hours of supervised clinical experience toward LCSW or equivalent
  • Experience providing therapy to adults 18 and older outside of internships
  • Experience with both individual and group therapy
  • Experience with concurrent documentation
  • Familiarity with assessments such as GAD-7 and PHQ-9
  • Strong organizational skills and comfort managing a structured schedule
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Commitment to working with diverse populations and providing inclusive care

Preferred

  • Bilingual

Schedule and Compensation

  • Full-time, W2 Exempt
  • 4-day workweek, weekdays only
  • 9:00 AM to 7:00 PM or 10:00 AM to 8:00 PM
  • Every weekend is a 3-day weekend

Salary: $65,000 to $72,500 annually - Compensation is based on experience, skills, and geographic alignment for payroll purposes.

Why Mindful Care

  • 100% remote role with equipment provided
  • Minimal administrative burden, billing and scheduling handled for you
  • No case management responsibilities
  • Clinical supervision provided to support licensure growth
  • Comprehensive benefits package including medical, dental, vision, 401k with match, FTO, paid holidays, and parental leave
  • Opportunities for growth as the organization continues to expand
