What is a remote proofreader?

A remote proofreader is a professional who reviews written documents for spelling, grammar, punctuation, and formatting errors while working from a location outside of a traditional office, usually from home. Their main responsibility is to ensure that the content is clear, consistent, and free of mistakes before it is published or shared. Remote proofreaders can work for publishing companies, marketing agencies, academic institutions, or as freelancers serving various clients. This role typically requires strong attention to detail, excellent language skills, and the ability to work independently with digital documents.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote proofreader?

To thrive as a Remote Proofreader, you need exceptional attention to detail, strong grammar and language skills, and typically a degree in English, journalism, or a related field. Familiarity with style guides (such as AP or Chicago Manual), word processing software, and proofreading tools like Grammarly is important. Excellent time management, self-motivation, and clear communication skills help you meet deadlines and collaborate remotely. These skills ensure accuracy, consistency, and reliability in delivering error-free content for clients or employers.

What are the most common challenges faced by remote proofreaders, and how can they be managed?

Remote proofreaders often face challenges such as maintaining focus without in-person supervision, managing tight deadlines across different time zones, and ensuring clear communication with clients or editorial teams. To overcome these issues, it's helpful to establish a structured daily schedule, set up a distraction-free workspace, and utilize project management and communication tools like Slack or Trello. Regular check-ins with team members and proactive clarification of project requirements can also help ensure successful collaboration and high-quality work.

Are remote proofreader jobs legit?

Remote proofreader jobs are legitimate positions that involve reviewing and correcting written content from home. However, job seekers should verify the employer's credibility and be cautious of scams that request upfront payments or personal information. Reliable remote proofreading roles typically require strong language skills and attention to detail.

Are remote proofreaders still in demand?

Remote proofreaders are still in demand as companies and individuals seek to ensure high-quality content across digital platforms. The role often requires strong language skills, attention to detail, and familiarity with editing tools, making it a consistent option for remote work in the publishing and content creation industries.

Job description

About the Opportunity

LILT is seeking skilled writers to contribute original, human-authored text samples across a range of subject domains. This work supports our language data and AI evaluation initiatives, helping ensure high-quality, authentic writing is available to benchmark and improve language technology.

What You'll Deliver
  • Write an original, human-authored text in your domain(s) of expertise (e.g., law, business, biography, religion, philosophy, poetry).

  • Follow a provided prompt as the starting point for your piece, once your domain of expertise has been identified.

  • Ensure all content is entirely original — no use of AI tools, translation tools, or copied material from any source.

  • Attest in writing to the originality of your submission.

  • Agree not to publish the content anywhere else, in accordance with the project's confidentiality terms.

Qualifications
  • Native-level fluency and strong writing skills in the target language.

  • Demonstrable subject-matter expertise in one or more domains (e.g., law, business, biography, religion, philosophy, poetry - other domains may apply).

  • Prior writing experience preferred (professional, academic, or published work).

  • Strong command of style, tone, and structure appropriate to the chosen domain.

  • Comfortable working independently from a prompt with minimal creative guidance.

  • Strict adherence to originality and confidentiality requirements.

Why Collaborate with Lilt?
  • Your schedule, your rules. As an independent contractor, work when you want, as much or as little as you want. No fixed hours, no check-ins, no micromanaging.

  • Get paid quickly and fairly. We respect your time and your expertise. Competitive rates, prompt payments, no chasing invoices.

  • Work on projects that actually matter. Contribute to cutting-edge AI and language technology that is shaping how humans and machines communicate.

  • Be part of something bigger. Join a global community of linguists, subject matter experts, and language professionals who are advancing human knowledge together.

  • Grow without limits. As a Lilt contractor you get access to diverse, innovative projects that expand your portfolio and sharpen your skills across industries and domains.

  • Have fun doing what you love. Bring your language skills to life on projects that are as interesting as they are impactful. We are building a rigorous, verifiable evaluation suite of Terminal-Bench tasks designed to test the limits of large language models on multilingual software challenges. Our goal is to measure multilingual robustness across prompt language effects, non-English data processing, and complex locale/encoding edge cases in terminal workflows.

What to Consider Before Applying
  • Not ideal as a full time job or primary income source. Work availability fluctuates with project demand, making this better suited as a supplemental income stream. As a 1099 contractor, you won't receive benefits such as health insurance, paid time off, or retirement contributions, and hours are not guaranteed.

  • Requires reliable availability and commitment. Once you accept a task, we expect quality work and on-time delivery. Most tasks require a minimum of 2 hours per day or 10 hours per week. If your schedule is unpredictable, this may not be the right fit.

  • Geographic restrictions may apply. We cannot engage contractors in regions subject to international embargo or sanctions. As a 1099 contractor, you are solely responsible for your own tax obligations. We recommend consulting a tax professional before engaging.

How to join our expert community
