Job description

Staples Digital Solutions is driving technology initiatives that help support reliable, scalable infrastructure across North America. This team partners closely with IT, infrastructure, business stakeholders, regional teams, and external vendors to deliver network and remote-site technology projects that keep operations connected and moving forward.

As a Sr Technical Project Manager, you will lead medium to large, complex technology projects that impact IT infrastructure, network implementation, vendors, and cross-functional business processes. You will manage remote infrastructure initiatives such as SD-WAN deployments, router, switch, and Wi-Fi refreshes, equipment implementations, and related infrastructure projects from planning through closeout. This is a high-impact opportunity for a project leader who enjoys bringing structure to complex technical work, removing barriers, and helping teams deliver on time, within budget, and aligned to business needs.

While this role is remote, the position will primarily be supporting multiple Staples locations East of Los Angeles, CA and the selected candidate will need to reside within that area. The role will also require occasional regional travel to other parts of CA and other national Staples locations. Consideration will be given to candidates that are willing to relocate themselves to the area.

What you'll be doing:

  • Lead multiple medium to large remote IT infrastructure projects concurrently, including network implementations, SD-WAN, router, switch, Wi-Fi, equipment refresh, and remote-site deployment initiatives.

  • Build and manage detailed project plans, schedules, budgets, milestones, resource plans, risk logs, issue trackers, and implementation timelines.

  • Drive projects from initiation through closeout, ensuring deliverables are completed on time, within budget, and aligned to approved scope and quality expectations.

  • Coordinate project activities across IT, infrastructure, regional teams, business partners, and external vendors to ensure clear ownership and timely execution.

  • Track project spending, review project-related costs, monitor budget performance, and communicate budget status, risks, and variances to stakeholders and leadership.

  • Obtain and evaluate vendor quotes, coordinate vendor activities, and support cost and benefit recommendations for infrastructure project decisions.

  • Partner with low-voltage, infrastructure, and technology vendors to coordinate installation schedules, site readiness, deliverables, issue resolution, and project completion.

  • Identify project risks, dependencies, resource constraints, and barriers, then develop mitigation plans and escalation recommendations to keep work moving forward.

  • Facilitate project meetings, status updates, working sessions, vendor coordination calls, and issue resolution discussions with technical and business stakeholders.

  • Create and maintain clear project documentation, support project governance processes, and recommend improvements to templates, workflows, vendor coordination, and delivery practices.

  • Travel to various regional Staples facilities up to 20-25% of the time.

  • Role will entail a rotational on-call schedule that is 24x7 every 10 weeks.

What you bring to the table:

  • Strong project leadership skills with the ability to bring structure, accountability, and momentum to complex technical initiatives.

  • Clear communication style with the ability to translate technical project details into business impacts for stakeholders, leaders, vendors, and project teams.

  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail, especially when balancing timelines, budgets, risks, documentation, and competing priorities.

  • Collaborative approach with the ability to influence cross-functional teams, build alignment, and keep contributors focused on shared outcomes.

  • Practical problem-solving mindset with the ability to assess trade-offs, remove barriers, and recommend solutions when scope, schedule, budget, or technical constraints arise.

  • Adaptability and accountability in a remote, multi-site, vendor-supported project environment.

  • Interest in improving project delivery processes, documentation standards, implementation workflows, and repeatable project management practices.

What's needed- Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, Business, Project Management, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent work experience.

  • 7+ years of experience managing technical, IT infrastructure, network, or related technology projects.

  • Experience managing project plans, schedules, budgets, risks, issues, milestones, resources, and stakeholder communications.

  • Experience coordinating IT infrastructure or network-related projects such as SD-WAN, router, switch, Wi-Fi, equipment refresh, cabling, low-voltage, or remote-site implementation projects.

  • Experience working with external vendors, including obtaining quotes, coordinating installation activities, tracking deliverables, and resolving implementation issues.

  • Experience managing multiple projects concurrently with cross-functional teams and competing priorities.

  • Experience using project management tools, documentation practices, status reporting, and project governance processes.

What's needed- Desired Qualifications:

  • PMP certification or another project management certification.

  • Experience managing IT infrastructure projects across multiple remote locations or geographically distributed teams.

  • Experience serving as a project lead for medium to large, complex technology initiatives.

  • Experience working in a corporate IT, retail, distribution, or multi-site technology environment.

We Offer:

  • Inclusive culture with associate-led Business Resource Groups
  • 22 days of PTO and Holiday Schedule (7 observed paid holidays + 1 floating holiday)
  • Online and Retail Discounts, Company Match 401(k), Physical and Mental Health Wellness programs, and more!
