Job description

Position

Global Energy Monitor is seeking an experienced communications professional to join its communications team. The Strategic Communications Manager will be responsible for GEM's editorial calendar and support communications work across its editorial portfolio and media relations - identifying key trends and stories within complex data and translating them into compelling narratives.

This is a broad, hands-on role for someone with strategic judgement and disciplined project management skills and the ability to lend a hand across a diverse communications portfolio. The manager will work closely with GEM's Communications and program teams to support major reports, data releases, and other communications projects from initial planning through publication and follow-up.

The Challenge

According to the Intergovernmental Panel of Climate Change (IPCC), we have less than a decade to make massive and unprecedented changes in the global economy to avoid the worst impacts of climate change. To meet that challenge,
Global Energy Monitor is creating trackers and other tools to provide detailed information on energy facilities, sponsors, and financing.

About Global Energy Monitor

Global Energy Monitor (GEM) is a global, independent nonprofit network of researchers tracking energy infrastructure worldwide, from power stations and coal mines to steel plants and shipping terminals, for the worldwide climate and clean energy movement.

Since its founding in 2007, GEM has become an essential resource for advancing a just energy transition, producing open-source data and analysis that drive transparency and informed action. Its work is widely used and cited across the climate and energy landscape, from Greenpeace and The Wall Street Journal to platforms like Bloomberg Terminals, and institutions including the International Energy Agency (IEA), IPCC, Climate Analytics, and Carbon Tracker Initiative.

GEM serves a broad community of stakeholders, including governments, financial institutions, journalists, researchers, and advocates, providing trusted, independent information that supports evidence-based decision-making and real-world impact.

Location

Preference will be given to those living in the United States, however, GEM may be able to hire employees worldwide in countries where our PEO (Deel) operates, except in countries classified as Level 3 or 4 on the
U.S. Department of State's website. Additionally, due to regulatory and data security requirements, GEM cannot hire employees who will be working from China. GEM does not have a central office; instead, GEM works with employees to create suitable home offices catered to the needs of their role.

Responsibilities and Duties

    • Project manage GEM's editorial calendar, including timelines, contributors, approvals, and communications support for flagship releases such as Boom and Bust Coal and Pedal to the Metal.
    • Provide editorial guidance and maintain the quality, structure, and formatting of GEM reports and briefings.
    • Collaborate with the Communications Director and GEM programs to identify, develop, produce, and pitch compelling media stories based on GEM data.
    • Write and edit communications materials for editorial and product releases, including media pitches, press materials, web content, newsletters, and other external communications.
    • Collaborate with the Digital Communications Manager to translate reports and data into messaging frameworks that support GEM's digital strategy and maximize the reach and impact of editorial and product releases.
    • Collaborate with the Director of Product and the Data Visualization Analyst to develop clear, accurate, and visually compelling charts, graphics, and other data-driven content.
    • Support media outreach, track coverage and impact, and provide additional communications support as organizational priorities evolve.

    Required Qualifications

Applicants who tailor their resume and cover letter to these requirements will be prioritized. Applications at GEM are carefully reviewed by our team. We take the time to consider each candidate individually.

The following experience and skills are required for this position:

    • At least five years experience in communications or journalism.
    • Ability to manage multiple projects involving a variety of stakeholders.
    • Scrupulous attention to detail.
    • Strategic thinker with a track record of supporting organizational-wide change.
    • Fluency in English.

    Preferred Qualifications

    • An understanding of the energy and climate policy landscape.
    • Established network of journalists in the fields of climate, energy, and industry.
    • High-quality messaging skills, a knack for developing cohesive narratives, and a nose for finding stories.
    • Track record of pitching and publishing stories in top-tier media.
    • Ability to translate data into compelling narratives using strong writing skills.
    • Experience with journalism or working in a newsroom.
    • Experience with graphic design or data visualization technology for digital graphics (Flourish, Adobe Illustrator, Figma, etc.).
    • Experience with project management software such as Trello and Asana.

Visa Sponsorship Policy (Role Eligibility for US-Based Employees)

Visa sponsorship is not available for this position. Candidates must be authorized to work in the United States at the time of hire and must not require current or future employment-based visa sponsorship at any stage of employment.

    Pay and Benefits

This is a full-time, 40-hour-per-week, work-from-home position. The salary is $106,483.55 for locations in the United States.

Locations outside of the US: GEM aims to offer comparable salaries, benefits, and leave to employees living outside of the US in line with our fully transparent compensation framework. More information can be requested by contacting GEM's People & Culture team.

    Benefits include (US-based employees):
