Job description

JOB SUMMARY

This position is open to remote candidates and hybrid available for local candidates.

The Senior Underwriting Specialist reviews accounts to determine acceptability within company underwriting authority. Completes underwriting and pricing of accepted accounts. If account is not within underwriting authority, prepares and submits it to the carrier; negotiates pricing and coverages. Initiates and assists sales staff with developing business. Serves as primary contact for agents and brokers in servicing and quoting accounts. Serves as interface between carrier and agent. Handles account problems with the agent, company and sales staff. Plays a support role with less experienced peers.

PRIMARY JOB OBJECTIVE

The primary job objectives of this position are: to grow the specific program book of business profitably; development of relationships with key program production sources in conjunction with team leaders and other team members.

JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Underwrites new and renewal program business for acceptability based on guidelines established by company and Amwins Program Underwriters: reviews applications, coverages, classifications, exposures, financial condition, loss information, and engineering reports; discusses pricing with producer, broker or agent; quotes accounts within authority;
  • Works with rating department to achieve pricing, terms and conditions
  • Completes Account Summary detailing hazards, controls, coverages, terms, pricing and thought process for each account
  • Strong knowledge of ISO forms and rules
  • Submits accounts above authority to underwriting manager and/or company
  • Sends out proposals
  • Serves as primary contact for agents and brokers; serves as interface between carrier and agents/brokers;
  • Initiates new business development efforts with assigned agents
  • Sends out initial billing and binding acknowledgement
  • Requests policies to be issued
  • Orders loss control in accordance with company guidelines, reviews completed reports and takes appropriate action, if any
  • Responsible for coverage changes and policy form modification, works in conjunction with company to provide modifications.
  • Coordinates with other department personnel: consults engineering and claims to obtain necessary information in the handling of an account.
  • Responds to phone calls and e-mails in a timely fashion
  • Acts as departmental resource: mentors and answers technical and general questions from others in department.
  • Approves endorsements within authority and refers those outside own authority
  • Completes rate change reports
  • Quality reviews proposals and binding acknowledgements
  • Performs quarterly audits on peer files
  • Performs other duties as assigned

REQUIREMENTS

Four-year college degree and equivalent designation completed or in process with goal to complete. Good oral and written communication skills; strong interpersonal skills with the ability to work in a team environment; ability to work in a fast-paced environment with seasonal volume; ability to work with limited supervision and strong customer service commitment. Proficient with Microsoft Excel and Word. Insurance curriculum classes a plus.

WORK EXPERIENCE

Minimum of five years of commercial property and casualty underwriting experience. Prior experience underwriting program business, heavy auto and/or property a plus.
