What Are Remote Programming Jobs?

Remote programming jobs involve working to develop computer software without working in an office. Instead, you perform your duties as a programmer in a remote office location or from home. This job typically involves projects using a computer language such as Java, C++, Python, or Ruby, to name only a few. Programming jobs run a wide gamut of responsibilities, depending on the project and the industry of your employer, but may include database systems or app development.

How does working as a remote programmer impact collaboration with team members?

As a remote programmer, collaboration often relies on digital communication tools such as Slack, Zoom, and project management platforms like Jira or Trello. While you may not have face-to-face interactions, regular virtual meetings, code reviews, and real-time messaging help maintain strong team connections. It's important to proactively communicate and document your work to ensure alignment with your team. Remote settings can offer flexibility, but they also require strong self-discipline and organization to stay on track with shared goals.

What is remote programming?

Remote programming refers to the practice of writing, testing, and maintaining computer software from a location outside of a traditional office environment. Remote programmers typically work from home or other locations using internet-connected devices to collaborate with teams, access code repositories, and deploy software. This type of work offers flexibility in terms of location and often allows for more control over work hours. Remote programming has become increasingly popular due to advancements in communication tools and the global demand for technical skills.

Job description

Senior Geomechanics Engineer

ITASCA North America | Canada-based

About the role

ITASCA North America is seeking a Senior Geomechanics Engineer to support challenging mining and geotechnical projects across North America and beyond.

This role is suited for an engineer who combines practical mining or geotechnical experience, hands-on numerical modeling, and sound engineering judgment. You should be comfortable developing and interpreting models, while also connecting results to site conditions, monitoring data, operational constraints, and practical client decisions.

You will join an integrated North American consulting team working across geomechanics, hydrogeology, engineering geology, and advanced numerical analysis.

Why this role matters

Mining projects depend on sound geomechanics decisions. These decisions influence safety, risk, mine design, sequencing, operations, and long-term performance.

As mining projects become more complex, clients need practical geomechanics guidance they can trust. In this role, you will help turn challenging ground conditions, geological and geotechnical data, monitoring information, and project constraints into clear recommendations that support safer, more efficient, and better-informed mining decisions.

Your work will help clients move from uncertainty to action, providing the technical insight and practical judgment needed to make decisions that matter in active and developing mining operations.

What you'll do

  • Integrate geotechnical data, geology, structural interpretation, monitoring data, mine plans, and site observations into engineering assessments.
  • Evaluate problems related to open pit slope stability, underground stability, ground control, stress redistribution, excavation response, and risk.
  • Develop and interpret numerical models for mining geomechanics applications.
  • Communicate assumptions, uncertainty, limitations, and practical implications of analysis results.
  • Prepare clear technical recommendations for clients.
  • Collaborate with ITASCA engineers across North America and internationally.
  • Mentor junior engineers in engineering interpretation, modeling practice, and technical communication.
  • Contribute to proposals, client engagement, and the growth of ITASCA North America's geomechanics practice.

What you bring

Required

  • Bachelor's degree in mining engineering, geological engineering, geotechnical engineering, civil engineering, rock mechanics, geomechanics, or a related field (advanced degree preferred).
  • Minimum 8 years of experience in mining geomechanics, rock mechanics, or related geotechnical consulting.
  • Strong understanding of rock mass characterization and behavior, excavation and slope stability, and ground control.
  • Demonstrated experience developing, running, and interpreting numerical models for geomechanical applications.
  • Ability to translate modeling results into practical engineering recommendations.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to manage technical work independently and deliver high-quality work on schedule and budget.
  • Professional Engineer (P.Eng./PE or equivalent) designation, or eligibility for registration.

Strongly valued

  • Mine-site or operational experience in open pit and/or underground mining.
  • Experience integrating field observations, monitoring data, geology, mine planning information, and numerical modeling results.
  • Experience with ITASCA software, such as FLAC3D, 3DEC, UDEC, etc.
  • Experience presenting technical findings to clients or mine operations teams.
  • Experience mentoring junior engineers or leading technical tasks.

Why ITASCA

For more than 45 years, ITASCA has helped clients solve complex geomechanics, hydrogeology, and engineering geology challenges through a combination of technical depth, practical judgment, and innovation.

At ITASCA North America, you will work on challenging mining and geotechnical projects where the answers are rarely obvious and standard approaches are often not enough. Our work combines site experience, engineering interpretation, advanced numerical modeling, and state-of-the-art ITASCA software to help clients make better decisions.

We are proud of our collaborative culture. Engineers at ITASCA are encouraged to think critically, bring forward ideas, challenge assumptions, and work across disciplines. You will be part of a collegial team that values technical excellence, mutual respect, mentorship, and shared success.

This is a place for engineers who want to stay deeply technical, work on meaningful problems, continue learning, and collaborate with colleagues who are passionate about solving difficult problems.

Location and travel

This is a full-time position based in Canada. Preferred locations are Toronto, Vancouver, or Sudbury, but other Canadian locations, including hybrid/remote work options, may be considered for the right candidate.

Travel will be expected for client meetings, site visits, conferences, business development, and internal collaboration.

Compensation and benefits

We value your contributions and offer a comprehensive benefits package, including:

  • Competitive salary commensurate with experience
  • Performance bonuses, including cash and company stock
  • Health, dental, and vision benefits for you and your family
  • Generous paid time off from day one
  • Paid holidays
  • Company-paid short-term disability, long-term disability, and life insurance

The anticipated salary range is $130,000-$180,000 CAD. Final compensation will depend on experience and qualifications.
