What is a remote programmer?

A remote programmer is a software developer who works from a location outside of a traditional office, often from home or another remote setting. They use internet-based tools and platforms to collaborate with team members, write code, fix bugs, and develop software applications. Remote programmers often enjoy flexible schedules and the ability to work for companies located anywhere in the world. This role requires strong communication skills, self-discipline, and proficiency with various programming languages and remote collaboration tools.

What does a remote programmer do?

Remote programmers use a variety of coding languages to write computer software, mobile applications, and websites. Instead of working in the office, remote programmers complete their tasks at home or another location outside of the office. They take the application designs created by developers and translate them into computer language that tells the computer what to do. Common computer languages they utilize in their projects include Java, C++, and Python. Remote programmers may also be responsible for maintaining, troubleshooting, and updating the software, as necessary. Depending on their area of expertise, programmers may work as app developers, software developers, web developers, firmware developers, analysts, and computer scientists.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote programmer?

To thrive as a Remote Programmer, you need strong coding abilities in relevant programming languages, problem-solving skills, and a degree in computer science or equivalent experience. Familiarity with version control systems like Git, cloud platforms, and remote collaboration tools is commonly required. Excellent self-motivation, time management, and clear written communication make someone stand out in remote environments. These skills ensure productivity, seamless teamwork, and successful project delivery without in-person supervision.

How do remote programmers typically collaborate with team members across different time zones?

Remote programmers often work with colleagues and stakeholders from various locations, which requires effective communication and collaboration tools. Teams commonly rely on platforms like Slack, Zoom, and project management software to stay connected, share updates, and resolve issues asynchronously. Flexibility and clear documentation are essential, as team members may need to review code, provide feedback, or attend meetings outside standard hours. Establishing regular check-ins and utilizing version control systems help ensure everyone stays aligned and productive despite differing schedules.

Job description

About the Position

Want to play a key role in delivering large-scale fire alarm systems for some of the most ambitious construction projects in the country? At Power Design, you'll leverage cutting-edge technologies and collaborate with industry-leading professionals to help bring complex life safety systems from design through commissioning.

As a Fire Alarm Systems Programmer, you will design, develop, test, implement, and support fire alarm system programming throughout the project lifecycle. Working from our state-of-the-art corporate headquarters in St. Petersburg, Florida, you will collaborate closely with design teams and field technicians to ensure systems are programmed, commissioned, and optimized for successful project delivery.

In this role, you will serve as a key technical liaison between the field and engineering teams, providing remote support during system startups, coordinating field changes, and helping troubleshoot programming and integration challenges. You'll gain exposure to advanced technologies while contributing to the successful execution of large-scale, mission-critical life safety systems nationwide.

Position Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, and bench test complex fire alarm system programs for large-scale Power Design projects nationwide, leveraging advanced programming expertise to create system logic, troubleshoot performance issues, validate functionality, and maintain technical documentation.
  • Collaborate with engineering, project management, and field operations teams to define system requirements and maintain programming standards across projects.
  • Configure, develop, document, and support fire alarm programs throughout all phases of the project lifecycle.
  • Provide remote technical support during system startups, troubleshooting system issues, and implementing programming modifications to maintain project schedules.
  • Ensure programming solutions comply with applicable codes, standards, and project specifications while supporting successful system acceptance and turnover.
  • Apply advanced fire alarm systems expertise to develop functional solutions while mentoring and supporting field technicians and project teams.
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives that standardize and streamline fire alarm programming methodologies and workflows.
  • Support technical training initiatives that improve installation quality, commissioning effectiveness, and field team performance.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert for complex fire alarm systems projects, traveling periodically to project sites nationwide to provide advanced technical support, assist with critical system startups and commissioning activities, troubleshoot escalated issues, and collaborate directly with field teams during key project milestones to ensure successful project delivery.

Here's What We're Looking For

  • 5-8+ years of experience in the fire alarm industry, including hands-on field experience in installation, startup, commissioning, programming, or service.
  • Extensive knowledge of fire alarm systems and life safety applications, including high-rise buildings, smoke control systems, networked fire alarm systems, and applicable codes and standards.
  • Demonstrated expertise in fire alarm programming, system configuration, troubleshooting, and functional testing.
  • Experience programming and commissioning Autocall (preferred), Simplex or Gamewell FCI.
  • Strong understanding of integrated building systems, including the interaction of fire alarm systems with smoke control, mass notification, HVAC, security, and other related systems.
  • Ability to analyze complex system requirements, develop functional programming solutions, and support projects throughout the system lifecycle.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills with the ability to support and mentor field technicians, project teams, and other stakeholders.
  • Willingness to travel periodically to project sites nationwide to support critical startups, commissioning activities, and complex troubleshooting efforts.
  • Relocation assistance is available based on candidate qualifications.
