Position Description
Reporting to the Director of the MBE, the Associate Director of the Remote Master of Science in Bioethics (MBE) program provides the day-to-day academic leadership for the faculty, staff and students involved in the in-person MBE program. The Associate Director will also service as course director for one of the two core courses of the MBE (either Foundations of Bioethics or the Capstone Experience). As Faculty in the Center, the Associate Director of the In-Person MBE is expected to participate in the life of the Center for Bioethics, attending Center events, and including Center affiliation in your publications, reports and presentations.
Curricular and administrative elements of the program, including:
  • Provide day-to-day academic program oversight by supporting and communicating with program staff, course instructors, teaching assistants, and students, monitoring academic processes
  • Develop and maintain program engagement opportunities for in-person students, in collaboration with the education team
  • Supervision of TAs, TFs and temporary course instructors

Serve as course director for Foundations of Bioethics sequence and/or Capstone Experience, including the Capstone seminar.
Participate in strategic oversight and alignment of recruitment and admissions for the remote program, including:
  • Travel to events and conferences to promote the MBE program nationally and internationally
  • Communicate with prospective students to recruit them
  • Collaborate with Director on annual updates of admissions materials, applications and admissions rubric
  • Provide training for program admissions committee members
  • Participate as a reviewer for application materials, provide ratings and hold interviews with prospective students

Academic and student advising of remote students, including:
  • Participate in capstone mentor matching
  • Oversee letters of recommendation for remote students and alums of program in conjunction with the Director.
  • Advise remote students on career and professional development opportunities
  • Work with remote students to maintain satisfactory academic progress and identify and mobilize new sources of support as needed

Academic Policy and Oversight
  • Work with Office of Graduate Education to customize plans for remote students with academic, disciplinary or other special circumstances.
  • At the direction of and in collaboration with the Director, define and evolve programmatic policies and academic expectations
  • At the direction of and in collaboration with the Director, participation in and execution of the external review process.
  • Regularly attend the Academic Progress and Review Board (APRB) meetings to discuss academic progress for students across the master's programs and decide on any necessary academic remediation or disciplinary procedures for students at risk.
  • At the discretion of the Director, attend the Master's Governance to participate in and contribute to academic and administrative policy development, share best practices, collaborate to design resources across master's programs

In collaboration with the Director, and Associate Director for Education, and the Associate Director of Finance and Operations, maintain accountability to the annual business plan and budget.
Basic Qualifications
  • Doctoral degree required •
  • Commitment to and aptitude in bioethics education as demonstrated through teaching, mentorship, scholarship, and/or service/practice.

Additional Qualifications
  • Advanced degree in Bioethics or related field preferred
  • 3-5 years of teaching experience preferred.
  • Dedicated commitment to supporting and nurturing the career development of learners of diverse backgrounds;
  • Demonstrated leadership skills and operational excellence in a bioethics-related field or program
  • Experience with student and program assessment, faculty development, and continuous educational quality improvement
