What is a remote product manager?

They collaborate with cross-functional teams, set product strategies, gather requirements, and ensure products meet market needs—all through virtual communication tools. Remote product managers must excel at digital collaboration, communication, and project management to keep teams aligned and projects on track. This role has become increasingly popular as companies embrace distributed workforces and global talent.

What does a remote product manager do?

Remote product managers are responsible for analyzing product trends, forecasting demand, and implementing the release of new products for your company. Instead of working in the office, remote product managers complete their job duties from home or another location outside of the office. As a remote product manager, your responsibilities may include assessing current market trends and consumer needs to determine where new market niches are emerging and how your company’s existing products fit in those markets. You also oversee the team that develops and implements the release of new technology products to fill these niches. Many remote product managers have sales or marketing backgrounds; this experience provides valuable insight into consumer trends and satisfying customer needs.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote product manager?

To thrive as a Remote Product Manager, you need a strong background in product lifecycle management, market research, and strategic planning, typically supported by a degree in business, engineering, or a related field. Familiarity with agile project management tools like Jira, Trello, and product analytics platforms such as Mixpanel or Google Analytics is essential. Outstanding communication, self-motivation, and cross-functional collaboration skills help remote product managers stand out. These competencies ensure successful product delivery, alignment across distributed teams, and the ability to adapt quickly to shifting priorities in a remote environment.

How does a remote product manager typically coordinate with cross-functional teams to ensure product success?

As a remote Product Manager, you'll frequently collaborate with engineering, design, marketing, and sales teams across different locations and time zones. Effective coordination relies on clear communication, regular virtual meetings, and the use of collaboration tools like Slack, Jira, and Zoom. You'll often set and track goals, facilitate progress updates, and resolve blockers proactively. Building strong relationships and fostering transparency are essential to maintain alignment and keep projects on track while working remotely.

Job description

Department: Digital Marketing
Reports To: Director of Digital Growth and Web Conversion

Direct reports: 1

Location: Hybrid, Denver, CO or home-based, Boston, MA

Position Summary:

Why Join Bentley Digital Marketing Now?

There has never been a more exciting time to join the Marketing team at Bentley Systems. As a globally established, industry-leading software company, we are undergoing a rapid, high-impact digital transformation. We are heavily investing in modern marketing technology, forward thinking strategies, and data-backed experimentation. Here, you experience a rare professional synergy: the scale of a company whose established products actively shape the world's infrastructure, paired with the agility and "builder" mentality of a startup. We are actively building the future of digital marketing at Bentley, and we are looking for innovators to help us shape it.

About the Role

We are seeking a highly strategic, growth-minded, and technically fluent Senior Product Manager, Web Experience & Growth to treat our corporate B2B website as a core revenue-generating product. Reporting directly to the Director of Digital Growth and Web Conversion, you will own the overarching product vision, strategic roadmap, and platform health of our digital footprint.

You will manage the platform's core technologies, currently built on the Optimizely ecosystem (Optimizely CMS and Web Experimentation), and serve as the critical bridge between marketing, design, and engineering. In this role, you won't just manage tickets; you will shape the future of our digital journey, partnering closely with the Conversion Rate Optimization (CRO) and Discoverability teams to ensure they have the flexible CMS components and testing infrastructure needed to build discoverable, high-converting digital experiences.

Responsibilities:

  • Product Strategy & Roadmap

    • Business Impact Analysis & Strategy: Leverage a strong data foundation to conduct rigorous impact analyses and build business cases that dictate roadmap prioritization. Ensure every platform investment is directly tied to accelerating direct business and revenue through the .com footprint.

    • Own the Web Product Vision: Define and execute the product roadmap for the corporate website, ensuring the platform architecture and feature set directly support our aggressive traffic and revenue growth targets.

    • Component Library Strategy: Drive the strategy for building a scalable, reusable, and brand-compliant CMS block and template library (via Optimizely CMS) that empowers distributed marketers to rapidly launch pages and experiments without heavy engineering reliance.

    • Feature Prioritization: Gather business requirements from key stakeholders (Product Marketing, Campaigns, Regional Teams) and prioritize the backlog based on commercial value, technical feasibility, and user impact.

  • Platform Ownership & Agile Delivery

    • Technical Governance: Oversee platform architecture, performance (Core Web Vitals), and security, ensuring our web properties are fast and stable.

    • Agile Execution: Act as the product owner for your dedicated engineering pod, writing clear user stories, setting acceptance criteria, and managing sprint cycles to deliver high-quality web features on time.

    • AI & Platform Innovation: Actively seek opportunities to leverage AI within the product management lifecycle (e.g., using AI tools to streamline backlog management, generate technical specs, or optimize web performance testing) to help the engineering team "go fast."

  • Cross-Functional Collaboration & Leadership

    • Partner with Marketing & CRO: Act as the primary technical partner to the CRO and Discoverability teams, ensuring the platform supports complex A/B tests, personalization campaigns, and technical SEO requirements.

    • Stakeholder "Selling" & Communication: Translate technical platform updates into clear business narratives and present roadmaps confidently to executive leadership to secure investment for platform evolution.

    • Work with UX & Engineering: Collaborate with UX/UI designers on platform capabilities and partner deeply with web engineering to deliver high-quality code on time.

    • Executive Communication & Advocacy: Confidently pitch product roadmaps and platform investments to executive leadership. Translate technical platform metrics into clear business narratives and "sell" the value of platform upgrades cross-functionally.

  • Requires sitting or standing at will while performing work on a computer (or any other physical requirements).

Qualifications:

  • Experience: 8+ years in digital product management, with at least 3+ years specifically owning enterprise CMS and experimentation platforms.

  • Platform Expertise: Deep, hands-on experience managing Optimizely CMS (formerly Episerver) and Optimizely Web Experimentation.

  • B2B Web Optimization: Solid experience working in a B2B enterprise tech environment, understanding complex buying journeys, lead flow dynamics, and self-service purchasing behavior.

  • PLG & High-Volume Direct Sales: Proven experience in Product-Led Growth (PLG) or driving direct online sales. Must possess the commercial and business acumen to manage, protect, and optimize digital touchpoints supporting high transaction volumes.

  • Technical Acumen: Strong understanding of web architecture, API integrations, and front-end technologies (HTML, CSS, JavaScript/React). You don't need to code, but you must be able to hold your own in technical architecture discussions.

  • Agile Methodologies: Experience in Agile/Scrum frameworks and utilizing tools like Jira and Confluence to manage product delivery.

  • Executive Presence: Exceptional communication skills with the ability to influence cross-functional teams, build consensus, and present confidently to C-level executives.
