What is a remote power line inspector?

Remote Power Line Inspectors are professionals who use advanced technologies, such as drones, sensors, and remote monitoring systems, to inspect and assess the condition of power lines from a distance. Their work helps identify issues like damage, wear, or vegetation encroachment that could threaten the reliability of electricity delivery. By conducting inspections remotely, they improve safety, efficiency, and reduce the need for manual, on-site checks in hazardous or hard-to-reach locations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote power line inspector?

To thrive as a Remote Power Line Inspector, you need a solid understanding of electrical systems, power line infrastructure, and inspection protocols, often supported by relevant technical certifications or training in electrical or utility fields. Familiarity with inspection tools, drones, GIS mapping software, and reporting systems is typically required. Attention to detail, strong analytical thinking, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for accurately assessing hazards and collaborating with teams. These skills ensure safety, reliability, and efficiency in identifying and addressing potential issues in power line operations.

What are the typical challenges faced by a remote power line inspector, and how can they be addressed?

Remote Power Line Inspectors often face challenges such as working with advanced drone or remote sensing technology, interpreting aerial imagery, and ensuring accurate documentation of potential hazards. Additionally, inspectors must maintain clear communication with field crews and utility engineers to coordinate repairs or maintenance. Staying updated on industry safety standards and participating in ongoing training can help address these challenges, while strong organizational skills enable inspectors to manage inspection schedules and reporting efficiently.

How to become a remote power line inspector?

To become a remote power line inspector, candidates typically need a high school diploma or equivalent, along with technical training in electrical systems or line work. Relevant skills include knowledge of safety procedures, use of inspection tools, and sometimes certification such as OSHA safety training or a utility lineworker certification. Experience in electrical or utility industries can also be beneficial for remote inspection roles.

Job description

About the role and team

Engineering at Uber means building for real-world impact under real-world constraints. As a Software Engineer II on our Data and Storage teams, you will architect the foundational infrastructure that powers business decisions and core services for millions of users. Whether you are scaling distributed storage platforms or building high-performance data pipelines, you will be solving complex challenges at the intersection of low latency, high correctness, and massive scale.

The problems here are messy and the systems are global. You'll need to make smart decisions with imperfect information, own your work end-to-end, and stay calm when high-load systems are on the line. We are looking for engineers who think in systems, pride themselves on robust monitoring, and believe that the best solutions are built through candid feedback and cross-functional collaboration. If you're energized by challenges and motivated to move the real world - this is where you'll grow.

Rate of Pay:                 $171,000 to $209,000 per year
You will be eligible to participate in Uber's bonus program, and may be offered other types of comp. You will also be eligible for various benefits. More details can be found at the following link https://www.uber.com/careers/benefits.
What you'll do

  • Develop and maintain high-performance, scalable ad-serving systems for Uber's delivery ads products.
  • Build and optimize backend services and distributed systems to handle millions of ad requests per second.
  • Collaborate with Product, Data Science, and Machine Learning teams to develop new ad formats.
  • Work with streaming and batch processing technologies (Kafka, Flink, Spark) to manage ad performance data.
  • Ensure system reliability, security, and scalability, following best engineering practices.
  • May telecommute.

Basic Qualifications

  • Employer will accept a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering (Any), Information Technology, Mathematics, Physics, or related field, and 3 years of experience in the job offered or in a related occupation.
  • Position requires:
    • C++, Java, Python, or Go;
    • Backend software architecture design;
    • Distributed systems or microservice architectures;
      SQL or MySQL;
    • Data structures and algorithms development and functionality;
    • Designing technology stacks;
    • Debugging and monitoring for production services;
    • Software Development Lifecycle.

Ready to Ride?

This isn't the kind of place where you follow a playbook - it's where you help write one. If you're driven by impact, energized by challenge, and ready to shape how the world moves - we'd love to hear from you.

You may be eligible for bonuses, equity, and other compensation, as well as a range of benefits. Explore our benefits.
