Remote Power Distribution Engineer information

What does a Remote Power Distribution Engineer do?

A Remote Power Distribution Engineer is responsible for designing, analyzing, and maintaining electrical power distribution systems, often from a remote location. They use specialized software and tools to monitor power grids, troubleshoot issues, and optimize the distribution of electricity to ensure reliability and efficiency. Their work may involve collaborating with field teams, planning system upgrades, and ensuring compliance with safety and regulatory standards. Remote work allows them to manage projects and resolve problems without needing to be physically present at power distribution sites.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote Power Distribution Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote Power Distribution Engineer, you need a solid background in electrical engineering, power systems analysis, and a relevant engineering degree with licensure such as a Professional Engineer (PE) certification. Familiarity with software like AutoCAD, SCADA systems, and power flow analysis tools is typically required. Strong problem-solving abilities, effective communication, and the ability to collaborate remotely are vital soft skills for this role. These competencies enable engineers to ensure safe, efficient, and reliable power distribution while coordinating with dispersed teams and stakeholders.

What are some common challenges faced by Remote Power Distribution Engineers, and how can they be effectively managed?

Remote Power Distribution Engineers often encounter challenges such as coordinating with on-site teams across different locations, troubleshooting issues without being physically present, and ensuring reliable communication with stakeholders. Effective management of these challenges involves leveraging advanced remote monitoring tools, maintaining clear communication protocols, and staying updated on the latest industry standards. Building strong relationships with field personnel and participating in regular virtual meetings can also help bridge the gap and ensure smooth project execution.

Led by Founder & CEO, Rob Roy, we believe in revolutionary innovation, operational excellence and the principle of karma. Switch is where talented people come together to EVOLVE the digital world.

We believe that innovation isnโ€™t just about technologyโ€”itโ€™s about the people, culture, and purpose that make it happen. Every Switch team member contributes to a mission greater than themselves: to create the worldโ€™s most advanced digital infrastructure that powers the progress of humanity.

The Role: Controls Engineer III

As a Controls Engineer III, you lead deployment, programming, optimization, and support of Building Management Systems across Switch data centers. You own complex controls projects from design through commissioning. You ensure systems operate reliably, efficiently, and in compliance with safety and change management standards. This role requires strong HVAC controls expertise and independent technical judgment in mission-critical environments.

What Youโ€™ll Do
  • Develop and implement sequences of operation for HVAC and power-related control systems.

  • Program, install, and commission BMS control devices and supporting infrastructure.

  • Conduct functional testing and system validation for new and modified installations.

  • Maintain BMS databases, graphics, trends, and technical documentation.

  • Create and update as-built wiring diagrams and control schematics.

  • Lead assigned controls projects, including planning, execution, and quality assurance.

  • Troubleshoot and resolve complex controls and system performance issues.

  • Coordinate with Data Center Operations, Construction, IT, vendors, and customers.

  • Support after-hours response and emergency system issues when required.

  • Follow established safety standards and change management processes.

  • Provide technical guidance to junior Controls Engineers.

What Weโ€™re Looking For
  • You work independently on complex technical assignments.

  • You make sound decisions in high-pressure environments.

  • You communicate clearly with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

  • You follow protocol and plan for risk in a 24/7 operational setting.

  • You collaborate across departments to resolve issues.

  • You take ownership of system performance and follow through on commitments.

  • You identify practical improvements that increase reliability and efficiency.

What Youโ€™ll Bring

Required

  • 4โ€“7 years of experience installing, programming, and maintaining HVAC building management systems.

  • Strong knowledge of electrical and mechanical systems in data center or critical facility environments.

  • Experience with transformers, air handling units, cooling towers, pumping systems, and chilled water systems.

  • Ability to read blueprints, wiring diagrams, and control schematics.

  • Experience working safely around live electrical and mechanical equipment.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel.

  • Ability to travel domestically and internationally as required.

Preferred

  • Degree in Electrical, Mechanical, Electronics, or Software Engineering, or equivalent technical training.

  • Industry certifications related to HVAC controls or building automation systems.

If you meet most of these qualifications, we encourage you to apply.
