What is a Remote Postpartum RN?

A Remote Postpartum RN is a registered nurse who provides care, guidance, and support to new mothers and their infants after childbirth, primarily through telehealth platforms. They assess patient needs, offer breastfeeding advice, monitor recovery, and answer questions about newborn care, all while working remotely rather than in a traditional hospital or clinic setting. This role allows postpartum nurses to reach and assist patients in the comfort of their homes, ensuring continuity of care and support during the critical postpartum period.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote Postpartum RN?

To thrive as a Remote Postpartum RN, you need a solid nursing background with postpartum care expertise, an active RN license, and often experience in maternal-child health. Familiarity with telehealth platforms, electronic health records (EHRs), and remote monitoring tools is critical for providing virtual support. Exceptional communication, empathy, and problem-solving skills help build trust and effectively address patient concerns from a distance. These competencies ensure safe, effective care and a smooth transition for new mothers and infants in a remote setting.

What are some common challenges faced by Remote Postpartum RNs, and how can they be managed?

Remote Postpartum RNs often encounter challenges such as building rapport with new mothers virtually, assessing patient well-being without in-person examination, and managing varying levels of technology literacy among clients. To manage these, it’s important to utilize strong communication skills, leverage telehealth platforms effectively, and provide clear instructions for using technology. Collaboration with other healthcare professionals, such as lactation consultants and pediatricians, is also essential for delivering comprehensive care and ensuring the best outcomes for families.

Part-Time | Remote | BabyLiveAdvice, Inc.

About BabyLiveAdvice

BabyLiveAdvice, Inc. is a maternal and newborn health company providing virtual education, support, and care navigation to pregnant and postpartum individuals. We partner with hospitals and healthcare organizations to improve access, engagement, and outcomes throughout pregnancy and the postpartum period.

Position Summary

BabyLiveAdvice is seeking a compassionate and experienced Maternal Health Diabetes Educator to provide virtual education and coaching to pregnant and postpartum patients, including individuals with gestational diabetes, prediabetes, Type 1 diabetes, or Type 2 diabetes.

The Diabetes Educator will help patients understand their condition and develop practical, sustainable self-management skills. Education may include nutrition, physical activity, glucose monitoring, medication adherence, risk reduction, and recognizing when clinical support is needed.

This is an education-focused role. The Diabetes Educator will not diagnose conditions, prescribe medications, adjust medication dosages, or independently interpret laboratory results. Clinical concerns must be escalated to the patient’s treating provider or the appropriate BabyLiveAdvice clinical team member.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide one-on-one and small-group virtual diabetes education to pregnant and postpartum patients.

  • Educate patients about gestational diabetes and diabetes self-management during pregnancy and after delivery.

  • Assess each patient’s learning needs, goals, health literacy, cultural considerations, and barriers to care.

  • Develop individualized education plans based on the patient’s needs and readiness to make changes.

  • Teach patients how to monitor and document blood glucose readings according to instructions provided by their medical team.

  • Provide education regarding nutrition, meal planning, physical activity, medication adherence, and healthy lifestyle habits.

  • Explain the signs and symptoms of hypoglycemia and hyperglycemia and when the patient should contact a healthcare provider or seek urgent care.

  • Reinforce goals and follow up with patients to support progress and continued engagement.

  • Identify clinical concerns and escalate them promptly according to BabyLiveAdvice policies and established protocols.

  • Collaborate with BabyLiveAdvice providers, hospital teams, schedulers, and other care team members.

  • Document education sessions, patient goals, progress, barriers, and follow-up plans accurately and promptly.

  • Maintain patient privacy and comply with HIPAA, organizational policies, and applicable clinical standards.

  • Participate in required training, meetings, quality-improvement activities, and program development.

Required Qualifications
  • Current and unrestricted professional license or credential in an applicable field, such as Registered Nurse, Registered Dietitian, or another qualified diabetes education discipline.

  • Experience providing diabetes education, nutrition education, chronic disease coaching, or patient-centered health education.

  • Knowledge of diabetes self-management principles and evidence-based education practices.

  • Understanding of gestational diabetes and diabetes-related considerations during pregnancy and postpartum.

  • Ability to explain complex medical and health information in a clear, practical, and supportive manner.

  • Strong communication, active-listening, and motivational interviewing skills.

  • Ability to work independently and reliably in a remote environment.

  • Strong documentation, organization, and follow-up skills.

  • Ability to use telehealth platforms, electronic health records, video conferencing, email, and other online tools.

  • Commitment to serving patients from diverse cultural, linguistic, and socioeconomic backgrounds.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Certified Diabetes Care and Education Specialist, or CDCES, credential.

  • Registered Dietitian Nutritionist, Registered Nurse, Nurse Practitioner, or Certified Diabetes Educator background.

  • Experience working with pregnant or postpartum patients.

  • Previous experience providing gestational diabetes education.

  • Experience with maternal health, women’s health, obstetrics, endocrinology, nutrition, or chronic disease management.

  • Experience facilitating virtual group classes.

  • Familiarity with glucose logs, continuous glucose monitoring systems, and diabetes-related patient education tools.

  • Bilingual English and Spanish skills are strongly preferred.

Position Details
  • Part-time, as-needed position.

  • Remote work.

  • Variable schedule based on patient and program needs.

  • Some evening or weekend availability may be required.

  • No guaranteed number of hours.

  • Compensation will be based on qualifications, credentials, and experience.
