What is remote PLC ladder logic programming?

Remote PLC Ladder Logic Programming refers to the process of designing, developing, and troubleshooting ladder logic programs for Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs) from a remote location. This allows engineers and technicians to update, monitor, or diagnose PLC-controlled systems without being physically present on-site. Remote programming is commonly used in industrial automation to increase efficiency, reduce downtime, and support geographically dispersed operations. It requires reliable network connections and secure remote access tools to ensure safe and effective control of machinery and processes.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote PLC ladder logic programmer?

To thrive as a Remote PLC Ladder Logic Programmer, you need a strong background in industrial automation, control systems engineering, and proficiency in ladder logic programming, often supported by a degree in electrical or automation engineering. Familiarity with major PLC platforms (such as Siemens, Allen-Bradley, or Schneider Electric) and programming software, along with relevant certifications, is typically required. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective remote communication are vital soft skills for this role. These competencies ensure reliable system operation, efficient troubleshooting, and seamless collaboration with on-site teams, which are critical for maintaining industrial processes remotely.

What are some common challenges faced by remote PLC ladder logic programmers, and how can they be overcome?

Remote PLC Ladder Logic Programmers often face challenges such as limited access to on-site hardware for testing and troubleshooting, as well as communication gaps with on-site engineers or operators. To overcome these issues, it's important to establish clear channels for remote diagnostics, utilize simulation tools for code testing, and maintain regular virtual meetings with the on-site team. Building strong documentation practices and remote support protocols can also help ensure smooth project execution and minimize downtime.

What is the difference between Remote Plc Ladder Logic Programming vs Remote Automation Technician?

AspectRemote Plc Ladder Logic ProgrammingRemote Automation Technician
CredentialsTypically requires PLC programming certifications, technical degreesOften requires technical certifications, associate degrees in automation or electronics
Work EnvironmentPrimarily computer-based, remote troubleshooting, and programmingRemote or on-site, involves system maintenance and troubleshooting
Industry UsageUsed in manufacturing, industrial automation, and control systemsUsed in industrial facilities, manufacturing plants, and automation services

Remote Plc Ladder Logic Programming focuses on creating and troubleshooting PLC programs remotely, while Remote Automation Technicians handle broader system maintenance and repairs. Both roles require technical certifications and are vital in industrial automation, but their daily tasks and scope differ.

Are remote plc ladder logic programmers in high demand?

Remote PLC ladder logic programmers are in steady demand due to the ongoing need for automation and control system maintenance across various industries. Skills in programming languages like ladder logic, along with familiarity with PLC hardware and troubleshooting, increase employability in this field. The demand is influenced by industry growth in manufacturing, energy, and process automation sectors.

Job description

About the Role

A small, fast-moving defense tech startup in Austin, TX is hiring a hands-on Senior Robotics Engineer to design the physical control systems powering high-speed interceptor platforms. This is an onsite, mission-critical role sitting at the intersection of control theory, embedded software, and real-world robotics — directly impacting system performance against emerging threats. You'll be a core member of a tight-knit engineering team focused on shipping field-ready capability.

What You'll Do
  • Design and implement physical control systems — the "body" — for interceptor platforms.

  • Develop high-bandwidth control loops and advanced control algorithms (e.g., PID, model-predictive, adaptive control) to ensure vehicle stability and precise high-speed maneuvers under dynamic load.

  • Write high-quality, efficient embedded code (primarily Rust, C, or C++) to manage actuators, motor drivers (via CAN bus), and sensors on RTOS.

  • Integrate and fuse camera and IMU data (e.g., EKF/UKF) on embedded platforms such as NVIDIA Jetson for reliable, real-time state estimation.

  • Translate computer-vision tracking output into reliable motor commands that steer the interceptor.

  • Build and maintain Python-based tools for calibration, logging, and CI/CD to support rapid iteration and deployment.

  • Work fully onsite in Austin, TX as a full-time member of a small, senior engineering team.

What We're Looking For

Required

  • 6+ years of relevant experience in robotics, controls, or embedded systems.

  • Strong control theory fundamentals — expertise in PID, model-predictive or adaptive control, and performance tuning for robotics.

  • Proficiency in Rust, C, or C++ for embedded, low-latency hardware interaction.

  • Deep experience with embedded platforms (e.g., NVIDIA Jetson), camera pipelines, IMUs, and sensor fusion techniques (EKF/UKF).

  • Hands-on knowledge of motor drivers, CAN bus, RTOS, and ROS2/DDS or similar middleware.

  • End-to-end autonomy development experience: translating computer vision outputs into reliable motor commands.

  • U.S. citizenship and ability to pass a background check; existing security clearance or ability to obtain one is required.

  • A demonstrated passion for building robots or engineering projects — in or out of work.

Nice to Have

  • PCB design familiarity and EMC awareness; experience with oscilloscopes, logic/CAN analyzers, and basic rework.

  • Prior defense startup or mission-driven product experience.

  • Safety-critical workflow experience.

  • Model-predictive or adaptive control expertise beyond PID.

Compensation & Benefits
  • Base salary: $150,000 – $250,000 USD annually, commensurate with experience.

  • Equity participation in an early-stage, high-growth defense tech company.

  • Comprehensive benefits package.

Location

This role is fully onsite in Austin, TX. Remote and hybrid arrangements are not available. Visa sponsorship is not available — U.S. citizenship is required for security clearance eligibility.
