What is a remote platform engineer?

A Remote Platform Engineer is a technology professional who designs, builds, and maintains the foundational systems (platforms) that support software applications, all while working from a remote location. Their responsibilities often include developing cloud infrastructure, automating deployment processes, and ensuring system reliability and scalability. They collaborate with other engineers and teams via digital tools, leveraging their expertise in areas like DevOps, cloud computing, and system architecture. This role requires strong technical skills, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication for remote teamwork.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote platform engineer?

To thrive as a Remote Platform Engineer, you need strong expertise in software development, cloud infrastructure, automation, and a relevant degree or equivalent experience. Familiarity with tools such as AWS, Docker, Kubernetes, CI/CD pipelines, and infrastructure-as-code platforms like Terraform is typically required. Excellent problem-solving, self-motivation, and collaboration skills set standout candidates apart, especially in distributed teams. These skills ensure the reliability, scalability, and efficiency of platforms while enabling smooth teamwork in a remote work environment.

The Senior Platform Mobile Engineer will report to the Director, Software Engineering in First Dollar. This role is responsible for building high-quality, scalable mobile applications and requires hands-on expertise in React Native, React, Node.js, and TypeScript, with a focus on delivering exceptional mobile experiences.
At First Dollar, we believe in empowering engineers to build a smarter health benefits platform - one where human expertise is amplified, not replaced, by AI tools. We seek engineers who have demonstrated experience using AI responsibly to accelerate their development workflow, improve code quality, and solve complex problems more efficiently.
Our engineering team is built on the principle of humans over code. We are a tight-knit group of lifelong learners in a constant quest to be a team that is greater than the sum of its parts. Come join us!
Technical Development
  • Develop and maintain high-quality mobile applications using React Native
  • Build and deploy applications on both iOS and Android platforms
  • Implement scalable mobile solutions that integrate seamlessly with backend services
  • Contribute to technical decisions regarding mobile platform strategies, frameworks, and tools
  • Follow established coding standards, best practices, and development workflows
  • Participate in code reviews and maintain quality standards across mobile development
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams including product managers, designers, and backend engineers
  • Active participation in sprint planning, daily standups, and retrospectives
  • Continuously learn and adopt new mobile development practices and technologies
  • Demonstrated experience using AI responsibly to accelerate their development workflow, improve code quality, and solve complex problems more efficiently

Project Implementation
  • Contribute to end-to-end mobile application development lifecycle from conception to deployment
  • Deliver mobile features and applications that meet business requirements on schedule
  • Work with QA engineers to implement comprehensive testing strategies
  • Support app store submissions and releases for both iOS and Android platforms
  • Monitor application performance and implement optimization strategies

Technical Execution
  • Develop React Native applications with smooth user experiences
  • Integrate mobile applications with Node.js/TypeScript backend services and APIs
  • Implement cloud-based solutions using Google Cloud Platform services
  • Ensure proper state management using Redux, Context API, or similar solutions
  • Optimize mobile applications for performance, security, and scalability
  • Diagnose and resolve mobile-specific issues, such as crashes and performance bottlenecks

Education & Experience:
  • 4-7 years of experience in mobile app development roles
  • Bachelor's degree in computer science or equivalent experience

Technical Skills
  • Strong proficiency in React Native for building cross-platform mobile applications
  • Solid experience with React.js and modern JavaScript/TypeScript development practices
  • Experience with Node.js, including API development and integration using REST and GraphQL
  • Hands-on experience with Google Cloud Platform (GCP) services such as Firebase, Cloud Functions, and Cloud Storage
  • Proficient with mobile development tools and workflows, including Xcode, Android Studio, and Expo
  • Skilled in diagnosing and resolving mobile-specific issues
  • Knowledge of mobile app deployment processes for the Apple App Store and Google Play Store
  • Practical AI experience - Comfortable using tools like GitHub Copilot, ChatGPT, or Claude for prototyping, debugging, and problem-solving
  • Ability to evaluate AI-generated suggestions, ensure code meets our quality standards, and be able to explain, modify, and support any AI-assisted work as if you wrote it from scratch. This approach allows our engineers to focus on what humans do best: architecting elegant systems, making thoughtful design decisions, and building technology that truly serves our users' needs

Preferred Experience
  • Experience with native iOS (Swift) and Android (Kotlin/Java) development
  • Knowledge of additional GCP services (Cloud Run, AppEngine, BigQuery)
  • Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines and DevOps practices
  • Experience with mobile app analytics and performance monitoring tools
  • Background in mobile security best practices and implementation
